Went along today, as it's a ground I've not been to before, and I didn't fancy the Bank Holiday traffic home after Monday's game.
First half, as bad as anything you could imagine. As I remarked to a fellow supporter, it's like watching a non-league side away at a Premiership club - defend, defend, defend and just wait to concede, which we duly did, after the woodwork saved us three times. On one occasion Rowe-Turner bustled his way down the line to about halfway into the opposing half, and when he lost it no Chester player was within 20 yards of him, as we were all still camped in our own half. I don't think at any point any of our players touched the ball in the Aldershot penalty area.
Second half, a really enjoyable game, and shows what this squad can do if we just decide to go forward. Mahon won a pen almost straight away, and we had a number of whipped balls into their box that caused mayhem, most particularly from Halls, who can clearly attack with purpose if allowed to. Fair play to Chappell - not my favourite player but he made a big difference second half, hitting the bar and then crossing for Kingsley to smash home. Prior to that I thought we had a very good shout for a second pen, when Kingsley (who played much further forward 2nd half) smashed a shot on target that a defender appeared to block with his arm.
Overall, you'd have to say we were lucky to win, but great character from the players, who really dug in, played well in patches in the 2nd half, and celebrated at the end with the travelling Blues.
So - where do we go from here? There is clearly a reasonable side amongst these players, as they have shown when we are positive and attack with width. Please, please, please do so against Macc on Monday, get the win and break the run of home defeats, and we just might have a decent season. Return to all-out defence and we're back to square one. Are you listening, Macca?
