I think that back 4 + Stanway is the way forward although I prefer Coates on the right, where he's much more threatening. Edwards is growing into a rally decent, assured CB (at this level...must remember to mention that). Oh for everyone being critical of Weekes remember: he's not a Prwmiwr League player or the second coming of Lothar Matteus (just so you don't fall foul of Stating-the-bleeding-obvious Police) It’s Weeks. 😉 🫣 😅🤣😂

Bloody hell he's a national league North player not a premiershite keeper of course he will be a bit "wanting" in certain areas he will improve with the right coaching and could well be a great asset to us How immature and gammon like to use the phrase premiershite…. Wortley I haven’t forgot the racist kraut insult having been born in Germany and lived their until I was 9. Leave the moderating to Lobster who’s generally got his head screwed on. I’d almost forgotten about his xenophobic comments - highest levels of moderating a messageboard. Not to mention privately messaging me gloating that he takes great pleasure in winding up certain members of the forum - again, very becoming of a moderator. Still thinks he’s fighting the war for Churchill. Probably the last time he saw us play was during the wartime friendly leagues.

I think we proved yet again that we lack the physicality to see games out we always look like we are going to concede, if we score we need to stay on the front foot it just suits the players we have.

Every time we go ahead we switch into defensive mode and we look vulnerable look how many late goals we have conceded this season already, statistics don’t lie and we won that game because we didn’t let our heads go down when they scored we went again.

In the first 20 mins of the second half, Weeks must have picked their pockets 6 or 7 times through sheer industry. His quality on the ball was shown with the assist, but his work ethic was through the roof today.
I think we deserve a lot of praise for not collapsing when it went to 1-1 - that would have been easy to do, but to keep going and find a winner will be massive for our season.
I thought we were comfortably the best team today. Of course we want to create more at home, but today was a good start.
I thought Sparrow was excellent, but Caton was our best player by a mile. We just need to keep him fit!

One of the big differences from last season for me really. We could defend a 1 goal lead no problem last season. We are making some ridiculous basic errors this season. Also we were lucky as fuck today really, seen a replay of the pen. No clue how that was given, hot weather defo got to the referee’s head as was evidenced by some of the baffling decisions made in the second half

It was a game of few chances but I found it a decent watch.
Our habit of conceding late goals is frustrating and although it could have cost us dearly again, I was encouraged to see us dig deep and find a way to get the points in the end - something we often did last season.
Important win after the disappointment on Tuesday and I think this brief break from league action has come at a good time for us.

A huge relief to get the 3 points today and I think we just about deserved it overall in a game of few chances. Neither keeper really had much to do, but I think we finally got a bit of luck with two key moments at 1-1 with their miss and the pen.
It’s really strange to think that of the 8 goals we’ve conceded this season only Banbury have scored a goal against us in the first 80 mins of a game. 🤯
Great to see Caton, Thomas and Taylor back and hopefully Glendon and Hall won’t be out for long. The first goal was a great move and finish. Sparrow looked class and Maguire did well when he came on.
A win in the FA Cup next Saturday and things could look a lot more promising for us. 🤞

Was heavy rain when I tuned in after the blues stream. Does look like it was to do with the weather, but would you really abandon it on 96 minutes? I seem to remember years ago it was in the rules that if a game was abandoned after so many minutes, 74 or something, then the result stood. Or did I just dream it?

Usually yes, but not today, we absolutely were going for a second goal. We conceded as we switched off to some very quick interplay and a well worked goal by Blyth.

Weeks was absolutely class second half, winning the ball back even when on a yellow and getting the assist for Caton’s goal. Caton really grew into the game too and took his goal well, hoping his injury wasn’t too serious and he gets a run of games to show what he can do.
Think we got away with one there but we played better on Tuesday in terms of creating chances and lost, so hopefully our luck is changing. Hope Blyth enjoyed their trip to Wales 👋
Back four and Kepler looked solid IMO, unfortunate with the goal as that was their first chance of the game, thank god they missed their second. Edwards and Williams are rock solid, Sparrow really assured.
Shows how light we are up top tho that we’re ending games with Murray and Maguire in front three, but great to see Thomas back. Not just what he offers on the ball but he makes runs into space that open the pitch up for others, Evans offered nothing sadly but he’s probably only going to be backup to Hall at best anyway. Special mention to Murray again for his work rate, in that heat with another 90 mins in the tank and he’s still chasing things down (and winning them) in injury time.
Next Saturday is going to be nervy but we showed today hopefully that we can grind out wins.

Personally I think we have to find a way of incorporating Thomas in to the starting XI. Whether it’s winning headers up top, creating space, assisting or scoring himself, we always seem to be far more effective when he’s on the pitch. Our home form was rubbish last season but once he was given a go it seemed to improve.

Anyone else worried about just 2,010 there yesterday? If we have 1,800 ST holders, and approximately 80 Blyth fans there, the ticket sales were poor, on a Premier League blank day. I know not all ST holders will do every game and it was stifling hot, but it shows the current restrictions re ticket sales are having a big hit!

Games played in boiling hot weather often tend to attract lower crowds in my experience. Families are probably more likely to plan a day at the beach than the football. The Brackley game at the start of last season only had 1,600 or so there. While we’d hope for bigger crowds than what we got yesterday, let’s not lose sight of where they were not so long ago. Go back two years to our 5-1 win over Blyth and there weren’t even 1,500 there.

Probably the nicest thing anyone's ever said about me on here! I don't really get why the thread turned into a pop at WB though. All he was doing was sticking up for our young goalkeeper. Regarding the game and our season so far, it's boring but I try to take the emotion out of things and look at it in a mathematical way, because that's ultimately what the season boils down to. So far, we've averaged 2 points per home game. If we can keep that up, the away form doesn't have to be that great. If we averaged two points per home gane a point per game away from home, we'd be on 69 points which was enough for a playoff place last season.

Yesterday was a big improvement on Tuesday night and one swallow doesn't make a summer but tactically we were far better . So many changes made a more competitive team and as someone has touched on this already in a previous thread that trying to accommodate Glendon and Weeks in the same starting X1 adds an imbalance to the team yesterday we were more aggressive with our play.
Thomas must be in the starting X1 every game if fit, adds strength and versatility to the team and I'm puzzled why he gets left out. Stanway is growing in confidence each game and its unfair to compare him to Tyler, for this League Stanway will be ok.
I think Cal is find the strengths and weakness of the squad and once all our squad is fit and available Cal is going to have some difficult decisions to make.

Our home form was rubbish last season but once he was given a go it seemed to improve. I’ve been saying for ages that Thomas needs to be starting more games - not only is he obviously a talented player, he’s also the only member of the squad truly capable of providing natural width in attack. Despite winning yesterday, I was still a bit concerned by just how narrow we looked going forward, and our consequent struggles to create clear-cut opportunities, with most of the onus falling on Sparrow to stretch the game before Thomas’ introduction. The trouble is, though, how do we incorporate him into an XI alongside Whitehouse, Roberts, Weeks and Glendon? (The latter two need to both be starting, I’m not having this debate again.) The best I can think of is maybe 4-2-3-1 with Whitehouse on the left and Glendon at the 10.

Bizarre goings on at Scunthorpe, match abandoned on 96 minutes with nobody sure why! They were 2-1 down to Buxton at the time. To give some context to this it was the same referee for our game at Scarborough this season and Peterborough Sports away last season.
