Some of the volunteers I know are more than capable of discussing and securing a sponsorship. It was volunteers who originally secured sponsorships from MBNA, Swettenhams Chemists, Big Storage etc. I feel very sorry for Mark. He is a really nice, thoroughly professional man. Unfortunately the way that our club is financially we simply cannot afford him. I will be interested to see at the CFU meeting how our commercial income stacks up year on year, and again against target. I would imagine that the working groups set up will look to take up any workload left by Mark when he finishes. Hopefully this is step one from the board. Question is though nwas, is it step one, or is it simply trying to scapegoat one individual for a collection of mistakes on the eve of arguably the biggest meeting since the reformation of Chester FC? Regardless of how it reads, people aren't stupid and they'll instantly assume blame falls on his head for the financials given this redundancy. I may be naturally pessimistic, due to line of work, but i know what i'd go with. This is absolutely the case and I'm amazed people aren't seeing through it. I suppose it was just pure coincidence that Maguire has been sacked the day before a meeting in which the board was on a hiding to nothing. He has been put forward as a sacrificial lamb when he's been the only person, regardless of his flaws, who has had the balls to face the fans over the last 6 months whilst the board have hidden behind him. I've made my feelings known about the position of the CEO before (I don't think we need one), but this is a classless and humiliating move.

Wrexham fan here.
Do you really need a paid chief exec? We don’t have one - those roles are split between volunteers. We are lucky to have some well qualified people prepared to do these kinds of things for free - I’m sure that there are Chester supporters out there prepared to do the same.
Outside playing staff, our only paid roles at the club as far as I’m aware are those of the club secretary, commercial manager, and office and shop staff.
Good luck - I hope this all gets resolved and you come out of it in a healthy position. Clubs like ours are always going to struggle off the pitch when things go badly on the pitch, because we are fan owned and so heavily reliant on gate receipts. I’m not really sure what the answer is to this. We’re lucky to have a hardcore 3,000 or so who always turn up no matter how bad we are. As a fan owned club it is probably quite difficult to operate on crowds much lower than that.

As some have said above, it's never nice to see job loss regardless of personal feelings. I don't agree with the scapegoat theory and I think this is purely getting a wage removed from the wage bill. People rarely stay for more than two years in those roles. That's the nature of the beast but also it will always be a gamble on what they can bring in. We have possibly seen the best that mark could do and now it's time to move on. There are too many respected in the know types who are pointing towards financial melt down for it to be untrue. We've buried our heads in the sand once before, let's not do it again. LK to be fair has been hinting about it for months at CFU meetings and it's only now that the shit is really hitting the fan. Thursday, whilst being uncomfortable for everybody should also be seen as an opportunity for us to once again secure the future of this great club. The board simply have to do what's right. If you haven't been pulling your weight or delivering then you need to be honest and step aside. There simply has to be a good outcome of this meeting. To lose the club twice brings shame on us all.

Dare I say it, maybe it's time to get an owner/investor perhaps? There is certainly interest. Who? i'm not going to pretend to know the exact details but it's not a secret that there has been concrete interest. I fear that if we get relegated without an investor we could end up in a situation very similar to Telfords. The fan model is great and we've learnt a lot from it but it's taken the club as far as it can.

MM did not appear to follow the ethos of a fan owned club he lost the respect of the fans he promised alot delivered some of it but stopped communicating with fans by not replying to emails i sensed he was given too much up front responsibility for communication,he seemed to be the only person at the club who had a voice which cant he healthy going forward we need a full time employee to do some of the duties currently done by the CEO but not on the sort of wages mentioned he was getting(figures quoted true or not) You just contradicted yourself. Stopped communicating with fans but then go on to say he was he only one with a voice. Appears the club want to go back to an even more ameteur setup by having volunteers doing his job. A volunteer trying to tie up a major sponsorship deal. How would you feel as a large business meeting up with a bunch of volunteers to discuss a sponsorship, as opposed to a professional businessman? We were doing perfectly OK when we started out with the sponsorship secured with MBNA etc. Steve Ashton did a great Job amongst the others.

I always found Mark to be polite and professional and a nice guy,
and don't think he did as bad a job as some make out on here and only time will tell.
Good luck for the future Mark.

Did you ever try and give the club money through him? Did you always get a reply from him if you e-mailed him? If so, you were one of the very few!

Both have equal shares in the mess we are in. There is no hiding away from that fact, no matter how much finger pointing might be made at Maguire, it is the board who have ultimate responsibility in keeping a close eye on his KPIs and ensuring if he falls behind or drops off in his performance that this is quickly identified and steps put in place to ensure he picks up. If he's been allowed to drop off, or has become tangled in other work areas which were not part of his main role, such as commercial incomes, sponsorships etc then that is down to the BOARD

Not leaving until April. I still have reservations about the remainder of the article ie Working groups announcement in a few weeks, already been a few weeks, whiff of the old saying "Fiddling while Rome is burning" but have to remain positive! Given the lack of activity/transparency of the working groups to date and all the posts re that, do we draw any comfort from them collectively taking on the CEO role - I don’t. NO.

Great news for the club. We have got him off our pay roll before he kills us in his 'advisory' role. Has failed to deliver on his own expectations and is constantly haunted by his past. We now need to find ways of moving forwards commercially and logistically without the need for a one man show. Not often that I disagree with you TB but it's ' moving forwards commercially and logistically' without MM that I have a problem with. MM has his critics but I fear without him we will go backwards, back to the Evostick if the Board is going to take up his role.

As CEO, he has overseen the darkest hours of our reforming so far. As a non-insider I have no idea as to how culpable he is but the situation speaks for itself.
This board and the CEO have led down us down a very dangerous path. You simply can't expect to remain in post given the mess we're now in.

I think it's clear that there isn't a strong enough leader currently on the board and this has allowed MM, whilst well intentioned, to rule the roost unchecked. But let's not hang them all out to dry because of this. We need people from within our ranks to want to step up and fill these positions. What we need to have on the board is that true leader.

You’re obsessed with Graham Barrow, move on for Christ sake. Well spotted! However, I don’t feel it’s your job to tell me to move on, particularly in a blasphemous way. I take it you hate the thought of the Barrow Boys being proved right. Nice reply!

I am not being disrespectful to Board members because they are true fans putting in a lot of work to benefit the club but without some professionalism in a CEO role, we are a tin pot club.

The board beep backing the wrong horses. They're a shambles. I’d agree if it was the same people all the time, but board members constantly resign throughout the year and others sometimes step up at election it’s not as if it’s even the same board we had three years ago.

Beat the leaders 6-0, 19 points out of a possible 21, and moved into the playoffs. The only wierd thing is that you think wanting Barrow is weird.
