Great to get back to winning ways and with a clean sheet. It's no coincidence with Hughes and Astles back in the middle.
Pleased to see Vassell and Mahon back too, so Macca certainly has plenty of options when you think Killock, Chapell, Waters and O'Brien were not in the squad.

3 Much needed points. Glad to see the return of 4-4-2 and Theo and Hunty to the match squad. Lets hope we can put in a performance on fri.

Sounds like a hamstring injury for Luke. If we are going to be working with a smaller squad next season then it's going to be hard to justify a new deal for him. Killock will also be a really tough call if he doesn't get a run of games between now and the end of the season to prove he is over his injury worries.

Killock must be disappointed after getting back on the pitch last week to find himself not even involved today. Great result. Great goal from Horwood. COYB

Hughes m-o-m by a distance. If we'd kept Sam at CH we'd be pushing for play-offs now.

Good win, much better and that touch of luck from the woodwork. Friday night should be a good crowd and hopefully a good performance.

Vital win today well done to all, nice to see Sam Hughes in central defence. Only gripe is what's happened to Danny O'Brien ? Why bother signing him ?

A really gritty performance, where every single player fought for the cause. We were never going to end this run of form with a crisp, silky performance and win 4-0, it was always going to be one we had to churn out and we did it brilliantly.
Well done Macca for making the right call. Hughes was outstanding at centre back and Wade Joyce put in an incredibly industrious display; really impressed with him. Alabi and Richards never really got on the same wave length but even their presence unsettled Southport.
Of course we rode our luck a bit, but Dagenham and Dover would say the same thing against us.
3 points, clean sheet and we're all looking upwards again.

Brilliant, I take it we went back to a simple 44 fucking 2 Do you have to use foul language? It's not clever on a family forum and just makes you look silly Obviously someone has never watched Mike Basset England Manager

Had to work really hard for that today, all the lads put in a serious shift and although we weren't brilliant, the effort was enough to get the win. Both teams had a few chances, Shaw hit the post first half and they hit the bar twice within about a minute. Thought Southport looked garbage for the vast majority of the game though and are surely headed for the drop. Hughes was superb at centre back, no excuse not to keep him there now. Man of the match by far. Hunt was excellent too as was Horwood, and Astles was much more convincing than in the last few games, good to see him back to his usual self. Surely any relegation fears even from the most pessimistic of us are over now, would be nice to start working our way back up the table again. On to Tranmere, the match at their place was superb, both teams were excellent and could have been a league 1 game with the quality on show. Would love the three points, COYB!

Happy to come away from this with 3 points as southport have every right to think that they should have come away with the win. I've slated Joyce this season, but to be honest he played well today. Great to have Mahon back, gives us such an outlet that defenders are shit scared of. That leads us to Richards, get rid of him, backed the lad up until now, but genuinely offers nothing to the team. Get Allen in form southport for the new season!

Three much needed points, albeit against a team that look destined for the drop. Sam Hughes head and shoulders above everyone else involved, though Wade Joyce had a great game - important tackles, tracked the runners and shut off space very well. Did a dirty, unfashionable job very well indeed. Great to see Craig Mahon back too!!

A hard fought three points in awful conditions.Richards is a passenger at the minute.Everyone else done their jobs today. We'll be missing a few first teamers next Friday as there was a couple of walking wounded at full time today.

What a relief, needed the win, hopefully it will give the lads a bit of confidence before Fridays game. Agree with everything that has been said including the comments about Richards, needs to go, just lazy. Lads came out for second half looking a bit tired but picked up and did the business. Great to get off 43 points

Not much support for Richards on this thread. The manager finally listened to the comments about 4-4-2, might he do the same about Richards?

Is there a case then for Mahon starting in Richards place. i don't normally think of him as the obvious partner to Alabi in a 4-4-2 but is it worth a go? Thoughts being, if the 4-4-2 has worked again today we should keep it going.

That was a hard fought game, with good performances from Hughes, Astle's, Alabi, Hunt and Horwood. Also, good to see Macca revert back to a 4-4-2, with Alabi and Richards.
I know Richards is not everyone's cup of tea, but if we are going to go 4-4-2 we haven't actually, got a lot of attacking options.
They both need to play against Tranmere, because their pace worried McNaulty at Prenton Park

A draw would have done me today after the run we have been in, but a win is excellent. Well done to Macca who put out a 4-4-2 and paired Hughes and Astles up. No-ones mentioned it yet, but I was impressed with Johnny Hunt who was constantly barking out orders to his team mates. Man of the match has to be Sam Hughes. He made important tackles and won every ball, which preserved our clean sheet. I think that Joyce comes out for a lot of unfair stick at times but he played well today in the middle, making important tackles and breaking up the play. I'm glad that Vassell and Mahon managed to get some minutes and that we got a clean sheet. Well done to all our fans who turned up. The following we brought up is on the disappointing side as we took over 900 in October, but we still created an atmosphere. It's rather strange that we lost at Maidstone last week and their are nine pages on the thread, but we picked up a win today and their are only three so far. Anyway, it's Feva At The Deva next Friday, so hopefully we can pack it out, although it hasn't been advertised that well. Great win today, COYB! 🔵⚪

I wonder if Richards is a player who responds better to a bollocking than an arm around the shoulder? McCarthy's style is to be very positive, supportive and faithful in his players, and most of them have improved from last season under his guidance, but Richards looks frustrated and unmotivated. Maybe he needs to be told he's lazy and ineffective to get the bit between his teeth and challenge him to do better?

Sam Hughes man of the match by a distance. If he'd remained at CH partnering Ryan Astles we'd be looking at the play-offs now.
Great win, but I felt we were carrying a passenger (and I'm not referring to Joyce).

McCarthy should have bollocked Richards a long time a go in relation to his appalling discipline - that never happened. He's stealing a living at the moment and is only in the team due to Akintunde's absense and Macca reverting to 4-4-2. Seen him have one good game in 3 years - Tranmere away. The modern day Richie Partridge.....

That was one shocking pitch today which wasn't conducive to flowing football. It was like a junior league pitch!
Defence played well and Astles back to his reliable self. Sam Hughes has hopefully added another twenty grand to his price tag today. Thought Lloyd played well.
There was no lack of effort from Richards today it was just a lack of ability unfortunately.
Southport look like they're doomed but Nolan and Allen would be good additions to the Chester squad.

We just needed a win today, any way possible and we got it.
We got a bit of luck which has been against us in recent weeks, sometimes it goes for you and sometimes it doesn’t. A few weeks ago I was standing with my head down at Dagenham East Tube station gutted with our luck, today was the opposite, strolled on to the train back to Liverpool nicely satisfied.
Both sides had chances, Shaw hit the post for us and they hit the bar twice in a minute in the second half, their other glaring chance was when I think Meikle (who was impressive) got through but shot straight at Lynch. We had another really good chance ourselves when Richards failed to connect when the ball was played across the face of goal. The goal came about when Horwood latched on to a long ball down the left wing from Lynch and then lobbed the ball over everyone and their keeper.
Sam Hughes was seriously good today, it’s a shame we’ve not been able to see him there more often. I didn’t know it was so enjoyable to watch a centre back! Alabi also worked hard up front doing well and Lloyd had a good game as did Horwood who is much more effective further forward. I’m not as sold on Joyce’s performance as others by the looks of it, I was watching him getting caught out and reacting slow to danger, there’s no doubt he worked extremely hard though. He just needs to keep his concentration.
Great to see Mahon back who was like a breath of fresh air when he came on, great little cameo making things happen. Really hope he can stay fit and get back in to the swing of it.
