After all his injury problems, over the last couple of seasons, I was all in favour of releasing him, in the Summer.
How wrong, was I!
Mahon has been amazing, this season. A revelation, who is pushing for MOM, every week. Clearly reborn under the duo, he really seems to be enjoying his football.
On his day he is unplayable and is one of the best players, in this league and is reaching levels of consistency unseen since Burr's days.
An injury free Craig Mahon, is one of the players who could fire us towards the play-offs.

It’s not just in an attacking sense either, he is one of the few players not signed by Bern and Jonno but wow he is embracing the hard-working, high press style isn’t he?

He still frustrates me with his lack of an end product.

He still frustrates me with his lack of an end product. If he had end product he'd not be with us, he'd be league two probably, at least. We can't forget that these lads are with us, because they work hard and are okay footballers, they obviously have elements of their game that are fairly poor/average.

Never doubted him once. Unfortunately McCarthy and Bignot messed him around during their reign's of terror. Noel and Liam have stuck with him and got the rewards. He's now very direct and is playing with confidence. Just hope he can stay injury free because watching him in full flow is worth £15 notes of anyone's money.

Half of last season was not injury issues Bignot would not select him as Marney wanted to stay part time due to his Full time job which Bignot did not accept

The issue with Mahon is he over does it at times and hangs on to the ball too long, but he puts defenders on the back foot and carries the ball and generally gets us into attacking positions. He's been fantastic this season, which I'm pleased about as I wasn't sure BM and AJ fancied him to start with. He is one of those players that you pay to watch, you expect something exciting to happen when he gets on the ball and I love watching him when he's in the mood. As Danny said, another pleasing aspect is that he's fully embracing the pressing and his work rate until the final minute on Tuesday was unreal - I don't think he's been able to do that in recent times because of injuries but we're seeing the real Craig Mahon at the moment as he had a full pre season and is properly match fit.
In this day in age, and particularly at this level it's rare you get players staying at clubs more than a couple of season, it's important that you have some players that the fans can identify with and embodies the values of the club. Mahon has been here since we returned the Conference and clearly loves the club, so it's great that he's found his form again as it's nice to have players like that around.

Where did I criticise, just stating an opinion, we are having what is probably the best run for a few seasons yet you still seem to want to be negative, I'm ok for friends, thanks for the concern tho I assume it's ok for you to criticise Mahon tho as you know him 😏

Mahon was only given a 2-year contract because McCarthy was handing them out like confetti. I'm sure if he hadn't had got that he would have been released. His last 3 seasons have been stop start and he's missed a lot of games through injury and poor form. I agree it's great to see him weaving past defenders, but he rarely puts in a telling cross (like we saw last night from those 2 goals by Ruffer's lad) and he often fails to spot a forward pass to someone in a better position and his shots are often high or wide. I'm not the only one who thinks this as Big Si alluded. The one excellent goal he scored this season was a result of him dribbling towards the goal and shooting. I'd just like to see him shoot more and test GKs and pick out players in better positions. I think this league is his level. I just hope he can score 8 or 9 goals this season.

I will admit I thought he should've been released in the summer, or possibly even the summer before. I really don't think you can argue he's done much over the last three seasons and I expected that to continue into this season. I'm delighted I'm being proved wrong though.

I’m with Hannibal & Lobster on this. I thought his injuries had got the better of him, he’s had a great start to this season though just needs to release the ball earlier, have a crack or at least get it in the box.

Agreed Mahony has had a good season so far, looks fit and is a threat. Only gripe with me is he doesn't beat his fullback enough on the outside, always cuts back in. Only need half a yard, get past your full back and whip an early ball in rather than being Peter Beagriesque, beat your player once then try to beat him again!

I'd say there is a fair balance between cutting in and going outside with Mahon. If you're judging a player on how often he takes on a full-back then Mooney is a terrible player as he almost always cuts in. I think you'll find they're cutting inside as they're a right footer at left wing and a left footer at right wing. Allows them to cut in for a shot on their stronger foot, as we often see with Mooney.

Think Mooney is more of a threat cutting in, certainly has a more powerful shot on him than Mahon. Guess I'm more old school and like my wide players getting to the bye line, playing on the correct wings and trying to deliver a decent ball in.

Mahons form dropped off after the birth of his twins. They'll be 3 or 4 now so maybe he's getting proper rest at night.

Problem with creative players, at any level, is that more often than not there will be a lack of end product, it's that one moment of magic that they do pull off that wins games.
Mahon has been class so far, vital in everything we do going forward. There's more to his game than just taking people on.
Take the Hereford game. It was his hustling and leaving a player for dead that set up Stopforth to cross to Hughes for the first game. Likewise for Pritchard's goal. Mahon won the ball for Mooney to assist.
Hughes' wonder goal v Kidderminster was after Mahon winning the ball and playing the through ball for Hughes to run on to.
The 3rd and 4th goals v COLFC come from Mahon driving into the box, taking people on.
I'm a big Mahon fan, he does frustrate at times (as does Mooney and other players of that type), but it's been great to see him at his best this season, long may it continue.

Mahon's ability with the ball at his feet is just about as good as anybody I've seen play for us. The way he shifts it so quickly ties defenders in knots.
Injuries have held him back and his decision making isn't always up to scratch. But I agree entirely with Si, players like him are worth the admission fee on their own and we'd be a much duller side without him. Hope it continues, he's doing really well.

Our wingers are that good that we can comfortably play 4 centre halfs at the back without the need for wing backs who overlap or beat players. Our wingers waltz past players and get into dangerous areas constantly. Both are exciting to watch and mean we can be hard to beat playing 4 physically dominant defenders. Shenton made a superb save Tuesday and we were missing Roberts too. Green hasn’t kicked a ball yet and Deane Smalley is a right handful. Stopforth is a conference player in my eyes and our youth players are a joy to watch. It all feels abit weird having a good squad and management team to watch weekly . Just need the home atmosphere to improve and we are in dreamland.

That’s my point really. He doesn’t have it all. Similar to Wes York he can beat men for fun but sometimes doesn’t pick the right pass, that’s conference football. I’m just glad Craig’s playing at a high level again, he’s had rotten luck with injury and loves being at chester, he’s a hall of fame for me.

I have always loved Mahon since I first seen him play. Under Mccarthy I seen him come on a couple of times as a sub and just lit the game up. Love that he is having a good run in the team, wouldnt suprise me if someone came knocking for him.
