Yes, you have sussed me out, I do have huge sympathy for the cause, so much so I joined the organization, along with the other 3000 people per day they claim are joining I can see that causing disruption to joe public trying to go about their everyday lives may not be the best tactic, however I feel the time has come that something needs to be done about the way we are destroying the planet I have just come home from work along the A483, the roadside verges are an absolute shit tip, full of all manner of industrial plastic and detritus, this cant be right Common sense suggests that all those hot gasses emminating from the exhausts of internal combustion engines plus jet engines must be having some effect on the environment What about extinction, well look at the advert for WWF and elephant is killed every 26 minutes for what ? pure human greed. Rhinos are suffering the same fate Try googling Arabian Oryx, Shot into extinction in the wild just for fun by American oil workers [since returned by conservationists] No such luck for the Passenger Pigeon though, now extinct Scimiter Horned oryx ? how are they doing ? Google it Asiatic Lion ? Sorry but the time for action is now upon us before it is too late I know I'm in the minority on here but the impact of these protests on normal people is beyond justification. It's shameless self indulgence. They pretend to be winning the moral argument but they're losing it. Only a total fool or the completely delusional would think that intensification of these protests will increase public support. Quite the opposite. They're undermining their own cause, it's futile pretending otherwise. Loooool so the impact that a handful of protestors is having on some commuters in London is 'beyond justification' but the entire world being inched into a huge fireball is perfectly justifiable. Dear me - thank heavens the young people of this country don't think like you do - we might just have a planet for our grandchildren to live on.

Yeah, not sure any reasonable person uses that term in a sensible debate. You support needless civil disobedience and call me reactionary. Has the sun got to you today?

I would describe myself as left of centre and as previously stated I agree wholeheartedly with ERs cause, just not the way they have actioned it.This country is a dripping tap when it comes to contributing to greenhouse gases, whilst America, China and India have the full hosepipes constantly on.i keep searching the internet for news of protests in China but no joy, can someone enlighten me? On a side issue it would be very interesting to see how a Jeremy Corbyn government would handle such protests.

The point is that we are responsible for a lot more emissions than we should be - more than France, for example, despite a lower population. How much coast do we have compared to most of Europe, so why does Germany uses far more wind power than us? Why do we constantly have the most expensive train fares around? China doesn’t have the same right to protest as we do (and even if it happened you might never hear about it with the way their media works) and we can’t expect the US to take any kind of lead for as long as that horrible bag of old sick is in the White House, but I think Brexit shows that the world takes notice of what goes on here.

Not true, I would say I am right wing In fact the party, or parties i would vote for have been banned Therefore if i cannot vote for a party that represents my view then the whole democratic process is fundamentaly flawed

You’ve got to admire XR’s action, it’s akin to the suffragette movement - let’s hope this, too, culminates in a positive change to the world.

I fully understand peoples worry. But I don't see what they are achieving by stopping people going about their lives, these are just ordinary folk who have no say whatsoever. It might be a good idea to stand outside parliament and wave big flags thereby notifying the people who can do something

I am merely pointing out that the people being inconvenienced are people who have no influence in these matters and are trying to go about their lives doing things like working. These actions don't gain support from these people but achieve the opposite

I’d like to see a Venn diagram of the people who get really angry and agitated about ordinary members of the public being inconvenienced by Extinction Rebellion activists and the people who are really sanguine and comfortable about ordinary members of the public being inconvenienced by a No Deal Brexit.

It's unfortunate that people are being inconvenienced, but maybe they should direct their anger at the government for their inaction on this very serious matter? Climate change is very inconvenient to everyone, which is why some people like to play it down or outright deny it, especially if they're making a lot of money out of something that's killing the planet.
I think the problem is that people see environmental protesters as hypocrites and an affront to their personal liberties. They start asking questions like "Well, do you have a phone? Did you drive here?" The point is that everybody is part of the problem and can make small changes that help, but it needs major action from businesses and, more significantly, governments. Sadly, that means people may have to get used to things being a bit less "convenient".
Nobody will remember that they were a bit late for work once or didn't get their shopping done if governments listen and we reverse climate change. And if they don't, time will view these protests even more favourably.

It's unfortunate that people are being inconvenienced In some cases though it's been more than a simple inconvenience. People have had their work and earnings impacted too. Their message seems to be 'agree with us or we'll cause civil unrest and damage things'. They need standing up to, not supporting.

Their message seems to be 'agree with us or we'll cause civil unrest and damage things'. They need standing up to, not supporting. The problem is that if you don't agree with them, you don't agree with the vast majority of climate scientists, many of whom are in support of the protest. We live in a strange time when "people are tired of experts" as Michael Gove once infamously said, and there's a section of society that can't seem to accept that some people are cleverer than them. Hence the rise of the likes of flat Earth theory, anti-vaxxers and climate change denial. People are so desperate not to feel stupid, they go against scientific consensus and evidence, even though they have no evidence on which to do so, and even though they would be nothing to gain from any sort of cover-up. Personally, I'm very glad that there are people on this planet who know more than me! I'm not tired of experts, I'm tired of idiots thinking they're experts. I feel for people who are suffering because of the protests, but I suppose we've got to decide whether their inconvenience outweighs the droughts, floods, food shortages and huge impacts on poverty we're being warned of if we do nothing. I'm not ready to get myself arrested, but I don't want to look back on this time and think I just moaned about "uncooperative crusties" or whatever.

London police arrest man dressed as broccoli for the crime of... holding a sign promoting locally sourced vegetables. As THREE police officers moved in to arrest him he yells, “Give Peas a chance!” - legend.
People like him, a 95-year old pensioner, a female local councillor, a lawyer, a rabbi and many, many others are protesting government inaction on climate change. Arresting them and banning them from the capital does not make their point go away. It just proves that the government is willing to break the law (yet again) around the right for people to peacefully protest, in order to protect its own image.

Pretty shocking front page of the Star today celebrating violence towards the protesters.
Have to say, I don't really agree with them disrupting trains. I know it's just about getting the message across in any way necessary, but getting the train instead of driving is a realistic environmental step individuals can take.
