I think we will get a good deal for Sam, but its worth noting that he's a defender, who never command as much as attacking players do in the transfer market. Exactly, that's why we should play him as an attacking midfielder for the rest of the season, alongside Alabi in a free moving play where the hell you like role, don't worry about the defence, just play the oak tree at the back on his own.

As well as he's playing there, I'm not totally sure Sam is a defender. I think he's just a good footballer. When he first got put in defence we were bemoaning him not being in midfield.

Let's enjoy him for the final 9 games and get the best deal possible, been a pleasure to watch a class act get on with his business.
One of our own.

Last season, when he did play, it was in midfield or perhaps the odd game at right back. He seems comfortable in defence but I wouldn't be surprised to see a club buy him and convert him into a different position.

Sams best position is centre back he lacks the magic ingredient to play in midfield at a higher level which is pace ,you can get away with that at the back by reading the game.

Sam is a centre back all day, I would say he was played out of position in centre mid in the youth set up as he was wasted in defence. His build, the way he reads the game and most importantly how he heads a ball makes him an ideal centre back

I agree he is a central defender, but not all midfielders need pace, look at Scholes of the past and your Matic of today, top players adapt their games so that pace plays less of a factor. perfect example of a player who was incredible without pace, Shearer.

One of the interesting things about this situation is that you notice that a number of websites just copy their content from another without any attempt to add content or fact . In fairness to the Chronicle and Birmingham mail their content is original but the rest just rehash the same article.
Journalism is dead , we should be very thankful to Dave Powell and the boys and girls at the chronicle

Interesting when I mentioned that figure, months ago, people were saying we would get nothing like that. Not looking so unrealistic, now. Is it?

£200k seems reasonable to me, but the sell-on is crucial. If it's not at least 20% I think we'll have missed a trick there.

If we do manage to get 200k for Sam some of the money needs to go into the playing budget for next season as losing him will weaken our team badly. We should try and get Sam back on loan if we can from whoever buys him.

At least some of that money should be spent on 2 decent forwards. Although, I would like to retain Alabi.

It is surprising that we've not had any interest from those teams closest to us in the PL, but i suppose it really is lower PL and championship sides looking.
I'd go for Burnley if I were Sam, i can see Sean Dyche liking him enough to play in certain games. There or Barnsley for first team football.
This is the interesting thing with Alabi, i just can't see anyone offering him first team football, he's not league standard yet.

I can't see Sam going for a premier league club, he's going to want to play in which case he may be better looking further down in order to get to the top.

A Barnsley or Burnley would be great as then he's not yet at a top club (as in top half of Premier League) so if he did impress and got his move to a top PL side, there's a cash windfall waiting for us from a sell-on fee... ££££££££

Surely any team signing him will want a player that wins a header now and then.

The Club owe a big thank you to Bernard Concannon (he ran the Chester FC Academy at the time with Mark Howell, both volunteers) who scouted/spotted Sam Hughes playing in West Kirkby some years back, and persuaded his Parents and Sam to sign for Chester FC Academy.
