At least we got him on a pro deal so they’ll be something in it for us but he’ll be in their academy sides for another few years.
Good luck to the lad, he’ll be getting a decent whack too

Definitely a great move for the player, the level of coaching he will receive at Stoke and the likely opportunity to if not play for their firs tteam then at least carve out a Football League career a little lower down the pyramid.
Its also yet another massive bonus for our Academy setup in terms of showcasing the pathway for aspiring young players in the area to choose our club over others - with the KGV Hub given the planning green light recently, too, all of this adds up to demonstrate why kids should choose Chester to start their football development.
In terms of the financial benefits to our club, I would hope we have negotiated some good future add-ons (appearances/sell-ons etc). The "undisclosed" fee I guess will show in next year's accounts at the AGM for CFU members.

The club needs the money, the player deserves the pathway and lets be honest I'd be very surprised if we play any meaningful football this side of August.
Another massive feather in the cap for Cal McIntyre, Paul Reid, Jason Bowdler and the many other volunteers who have spent their time working with Will and the other lads throughout his journey at Chester FC.
Good luck Will, a smashing player and a lad who has worked very hard to get this opportunity. The way Stoke are going he may end up in the Premier League next season. Our first Premier League player since Jon Walters?

He looked the business from what I saw of him so not surprised he's been snapped up. Got to think about the money at the moment and hopefully there's a sell-on fee included.

Just noticed they also signed Shaun Wright-Phillips’ son (Ian Wright’s grandson) to join Goodwin in their U23 team.
Makes you feel well old doesn’t it?

Great for the kid and his agents. Good luck to Will at Stoke. I will reserve judgement on whether it's good for the club until I know the fee, but I suppose we don't have much choice at the moment with no football now likely until August. Assume we will have a 20 per cent sell on clause. What's he played for us...fewer than ten games and one senior goal?

A little gutted as after seeing him play a few times you could see he was a smart and very capable player, would have liked to see how he would have got on with us for another season. But can't blame the lad for going to a much bigger club and also due to the season looking like it's going to end.
All the best to Will.

I visited the Stoke forum and someone said what they believed the fee is if he is right it’s peanuts up front but he did say it’s with loads of add ons which should boost it up if the lad develops like we think he will.

What's peanuts to them might not be to us. Let's be honest, a few grand and loads of sell ons for a lad with 4 months on his contract with likely no more football this season isn't bad, plus he has only played a handful of times. Just hope he has better luck than Sam Hughes has with injuries.

Seeing as a figure is being reported, and will become a matter of record when the accounts are published, then let's get the figure out there. I stress this is not official but 7,500 is being reported.

Not like you to jump in with both feet mate😂, not knocking the fee as it’s relative in the current situation we all find ourselves in but no doubt some people will have unrealistic views on what the fee should have been but the lad could have walked at the end of this season.

I hesitated before posting, believe it or not.😎 I don't see any need for the fee to be undisclosed, and how can we have any meaningful debate about whether it's a good deal for the club if we don't know? I appreciate it's a package and the key for us could be a link to appearances. Since we reformed we haven't had a penny in sell on fees and doubt we will see anything from Sam Hughes. The club says the fee for Will is "significant"

Good to see I am being quoted on the Stoke City forum The other lad I rated really highly, is Joe Malkin at Nantwich. Really surprised no one has taken a chance, on him.

I enjoy reading your posts ‘mfg’ and get the impression you have done some coaching/scouting within non-league as your comments and viewpoints are always constructive and measured.

I have done both and ran Connahs Quay Nomads Academy for a year, when Nev Powell was manager.

Great bloke Nev, he really established Nomads (was there for 14 years) and deserved his move to a bigger club. I arrived as the Media Officer at Nomads at the start of Mark McGregor's first of his five and a half seasons in charge (which proved to be our final, expunged season as Chester City FC). I served for two and a half years. Lovely club, great people still involved.

The problem for us is that these lads get cherry picked after a handful of games ....it's a no brainer for clubs like Stoke. They pay a small up front fee and dangle the carrot of add ons. If they don't make it, they just spit them out in two or three years. At least in the old days you got to see a player like Rush have a season for us. Not sure what the answer is.

I joined the club during the death throes of our Oldco, and left when things started picking up with Newco (second season 2011/12) after splitting my Saturdays between the two during Newco’s first season, and found I couldn’t really commit to Nomads anymore.
Nothing more than that, you’ll be delighted to know.
Served with a great club Secretary at Nomads and we actually ended up joining and leaving the club around the same time. He was a former referee and was the first man to send off Roy Keane. He was also the linesman when Eric Cantona Kung-fu kicked the fascist scumbag at Palace.

Returning to the topic...
Whilst it would have been nice to see Goodwin develop (he reminded me a bit of a young Ian Dowie), he was obviously still very raw, so it's got to be a good thing for him to make such a move. He gets an amazing opportunity, we get a few quid now for a kid (and the chance of plenty more - hopefully - if he works out), and the reputation of our youth system rises even higher. What local young player and his family wouldn't want to come and play for our youth set-up if it's offering opportunities like this?

This lad will make it and I ll tell you why? Self belief and zero fear. All the better players, I ever worked with had it. Its why they stand out. According to Stoke he has gone straight into the U23's , that says something.
