Probably a good point in the end. Good game to watch too.
First 25 minutes we were the better side, and looked dangerous every time we got near their box. Unfortunately we didn't work their goalkeeper when we created stuff. Game got more even as half went on though.
Second half they were the better side. We seemed unable to move the ball, retain possession and relieve the pressure for long. They seemed to have loads of free kicks from 30 yards out on the left.
Both of their goals came from the space between Burke and Coulson. Coulson had the 7 outside him. Once their 9 realised he could shove Coulson and not get penalised, he did it every time. Maybe we should have adjusted for that.
By setting up to be solid with Kenyon and Devine protecting the back four, you are relying on the next 3 to receive and keep the ball. After 30 minutes they stopped us doing that, and we had less possession.
Thomas did well, especially first half. Stephenson didn't gave a good game, apart from the 25 harder for the goal! He doesn't look happy having to work back and drop in. He becomes too passive. When he turns and runs at people, he's a different player.
I'm not yet convinced about Murray as a 10 in this league. He's got quick feet, but he often turns into trouble, or leaves the ball to run into space when there isn't any. Unfortunately that's a key position in that formation. Dudley or Lynch are better options.
If we solve the 10 position, and get Stephenson running at the defence with the ball, then we'll get Willoughby more support. He's looking isolated at times. If we create chances for him, he's likely to score.
It's probably a matter of getting key players back. It improves the team, and gives us options from the bench. It's taking shape. With all the injuries, illness and dodgy decisions we've had to contend with, mid table and unbeaten in 6 is a pretty good place to be.

Great result given all the injuries to key players Like I said being hard to beat goes a long way, in this league and organisationally we are miles better, than last season. And so we should be. We're practically full time, with a permanent training base with a bigger budget! Last season was our nadir, effectively our worst since reformation. Comparing this season to last shouldn't be seen as a positive, christ. And don't forget, we had injuries and illness which put us two weeks behind last season too. Its definitely two points lost. To have the lead twice and giving the win away ala Alfreton and Peterborough shows there's still a bit of a soft touch to us, but the flip side is we got hammered there last season, and although I don't personally like it we seem to have a plan away from home where we sit deep and look to counter. Devine and Kenyon look what they are, two ex football league players, they get the game, although Kenyon definitely lacks a few yards of pace now. We'll get better as the season goes on especially with Weeks to compliment Devine and Kenyon/Roberts. I'd just like to see a bit more pressure applied when we're in the lead. Agree with a few points here Beavis, especially with our change in expectations. We’ve got a fair few lads who should be playing NL and league 2 players in Kenyon and Devine who dropped 2 levels. Been a while since we’ve had backing and a squad like this so I agree we can’t fully compare to last season. What I expect though, with players coming back, is to put a little run of 3-4 wins together. After Darlington we’ve got what we and maybe what Cal was alluding too, an easier run; Farsley Kettering Gloucester Then BPA, Leamington and Blyth at home across November and early December.

Farsley will be the next round of the cup should we get through on Saturday So our next three league games would be Darlington Kettering Gloucester All at home - should really be looking at 9 points from these and then the away draws look decent.

Hopefully he can shift a bit of bulk and get back to the player we know he can be. He'd make a big difference.

He needs to play well for a 90 minutes to prove to himself, and us, the class is still there. Hopefully starting Saturday.

As I have said elsewhere the fixtures get a bit easier now and you’d hope some of the injured will continue to return to the team. So it would be nice if we built on the current solid but unspectacular first 10 games by stringing together some wins and ultimately working our way up the league - a bit like Stockport did the year they got promoted. With a fair wind, I think 18 (poss more) points from the next 10 fixtures is perfectly achievable…here’s hoping 🤞🤞🤞

Just realised the ref last night was the same one who sent off Thomas and Lynch vs Fylde, definitely has it in for us as he hardly gave us anything.

I thought that during the first half the ref seemed OK. But the second half he became a 'homer' and gave every 50/50 decision to Chorley. Some baffling decisions and cards too.

Looked a good game, could've easily been 3-3 or 3-2 to either side. Agree with CM that we're not far away, it's fine margins.
Still think we'll always be a target aerially with the current height of the back four though. But this game and Buxton were definitely games that we would've folded in last season, looking forward to the run of home games

On the whole it was a good performance from us on Tuesday night (one of our better ones this season), although it is frustrating and gutting that we could only take the point back home having been in front twice. Two points out of six from the away doubleheader is lower than what I expected or wanted, however I suppose we are now six unbeaten which is a very impressive feat. Touch wood, our run of games coming up look more favourable for us on paper, so hopefully we will put a few wins together to make up for the dropped points on Tuesday. The match itself was really entertaining throughout, because it was two sides who wanted to get the win, rather than at Buxton last week where it was a story of two good defences but two ineffective forward lines. Chorley are a club that I’m not keen on for obvious reasons, but fair play to their team on Tuesday who played their part in a good, competitive match. I thought they were pretty poor to begin with, but they grew into the clash as the encounter went on, and I think they’ll be the happier side having been behind twice.
Our first-half performance was great on the whole, especially in the opening 25 minutes where we were by far the better side. We created loads of chances and should’ve been a few goals up early on, so it’s a shame that we couldn’t bury one or two away to put the match beyond any doubt. After just five minutes, our first opportunity came through Darren Stephenson who flashed a header across the face of goal, while Kurt Willoughby fired wide three minutes later. We maintained our early pressure as Jamie Morgan did well to find Iwan Murray who drilled inches wide. Just a minute later, we deservedly put ourselves in front courtesy of Adam Thomas, who got on the end of a delightful Lewis Coulton cross to make it 0-1 to us. Chorley began to up the ante, as Harry Tyrer had to make two important stops by firstly denying a threatening Adam Blakeman free kick, before a Scott Wilson header was straight at him. Halfway through the half Tyrer caught another Wilson header, while seven minutes later Ollie Shenton whipped over from close range. With less than 10 minutes of the half to go, Adam Thomas was agonisingly close to doubling our lead, as a lob on the edge of the penalty box struck the crossbar. A really encouraging half, as we went into the break with a deserved lead in our favour.
The second-period was more even and closely matched, so in a way it is frustrating that we could not build on a very good first 45. I still thought we played quite well, but Chorley were much more dangerous and active in the final third. We still created some decent openings too, with the obvious one being Darren Stephenson’s finish which was an immense goal. Five minutes into the half a menacing Danny Devine shot forced Matt Urwin to make a great save in the Chorley net, as he had to palm the ball over. Right at the other end though, Chorley equalised a minute later to make it 1-1, where Connor Hall dinked the ball into an empty net. The home side maintained their early pressure, as Harry Tyrer did well to catch a goal-bound Adam Blakeman attempt. On the hour mark our goalie had to rush back across his goal line to keep a Jonathan Ustabasi header out which was destined for the net. Matty Williams attempted to play a header back to Tyrer, which almost backfired because the on-loan Everton ‘keeper had to be switched on to save Ustabasi’s intervention. With 14 minutes to go, we retook the lead as Darren Stephenson found the bottom corner to make it 1-2 - sparking scenes in the away end. On the 80th-minute mark Billy Whitehouse almost put the Lancashire side back on level terms, as he whipped an effort inches wide. Urwin had to be alert to smother a Kurt Willoughby shot, who did excellently to win the ball off Scott Wilson beforehand. It was heartbreak for us, as with just three minutes of normal time to go Chorley equalised courtesy of Jack Sampson, who headed in from close range to make it 2-2. The home side had the chance to even win it in injury time, but luckily Tyrer was on hand to claim an Ustabasi ball. We had to settle for the point having been in front twice.
Man of the match is a difficult one, as the majority of our side played well on the night. Having had a disruptive start to life in a Chester FC shirt though, Adam Thomas is probably worthy of it as he was very good on Tuesday night. He opened our account with a bullet header, while especially in that first-half he ran Chorley ragged. If Adam can get a good run of games under his belt now, and play like he did against the likes of Chorley and Peterborough Sports, then I am really excited to see him deliver for us. Harry Tyrer had to be on his game, as Chorley were a very direct side who liked to pump dangerous long balls into the box. On the whole Harry did well to come off his line to claim those deliveries, which is a world away from Louis Gray last season who was really hesitant. I felt that Tyrer’s positioning for their first goal should’ve been better, but on the whole he had a solid game. Lewis Coulton put in a good display too, as he was very involved in our forward play in the first half, with his peach of a ball for Thomas’ goal being his standout moment.
It is two points dropped in my opinion, but to come away from Buxton and Chorley undefeated is supposedly better than last season where we probably would have lost at least one of them. For the time being though, attentions switch from the league to the FA Cup, where we have a huge game tomorrow. Our next match is tomorrow as we face Hanley Town at home in the Emirates FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round where we look to make it seven matches unbeaten. We must not be too complacent as Hanley have some standout names in their side, but this is a huge chance for us to go one step closer to the 1st Round, so we have to win.
