Talk of the budget is valid, but needs to be thought about rationally. Are we struggling to get the players Cal wants? Is salary the only consideration, or are there other factors (model, training times etc)? It's not a perfect market, good players can be found below their "value". For example if a player is based in Merseyside, Cheshire or Greater Manchester, then a lower offer from us would be more attractive than a higher wage from say Spennymoor, because of the travelling time and costs. However I don't think us not being in the playoffs can be blamed on budget. The team and squad are good enough, evidenced by us beating all the top sides. We have not got the best out of these players with enough consistency We've gone out and signed probably one of the best wingers at this level on loan from Oldham, signed Burton, a lad highly thought of by John Askey and at Scarborough last season so I don't buy that the budget isn't sufficient to sign quality. You will struggle to find a player with higher quality than Tollitt at this level. What we don't have at the moment is a manager or coaching team that seem to be able to get the best out of this squad at home. 2 years we've had now and the performances at home have steadily been getting worse and worse

Put the pitch back to its normal size. We’re telegraphing our intent to not play wide, never play long and try and play our way into the box. Other teams worked it out months ago and quite honestly a game plan for visiting Chester must be one of the easiest to put together. Any team can stop us scoring at home, and undo us with set pieces which we’ve been bad at defending.

I'm never a fan of a manager blaming the lack of success on the budget available. I get that we may not have the biggest budget in the league, but surely when any manager signs a contract they are given X amount to work with and a target to meet. If they don't meet the target on said budget, then they can't blame the limited funds.
We have a very successful boost-the-budget every season which gives the manager transfer funds over and above what our standard turnover would offer, but I think most of us would say that a large part of the issue this season has been piss poor recruitment and woeful tactics, especially against teams that sit back and invite us to try and break them down.
Assuming our target this season had to be the play-offs, is Cal saying that he's not been given the agreed monies to spend, or is he admitting that the budget isn't enough for him to meet that target (and I appreciate we're not out of it yet!) If it's the latter, then I'm a bit concerned what the plan is to change things next year, with the budget likely to be similar to this season and the league just as tough (if not even tougher) to get out of. Let's be 100% honest here, if Cal was to actually come out and say that he doubts we'll make the play-offs next year on the budget he has on offer, then how many of us would back him as the man to take us forward?
FWIW, I'm still backing Calum as manager. I love the fact that he's Chester through and through and that he really seems to get the whole Chester FC ethos. That said, I think he really does need to prove himself next season, as there's a limit to how much goodwill I can muster when we've been so painful to watch over the last few months.

If our target isn’t to get into the play offs of this division we may as well shut the gates. Decent attendances compared to others. Boost the budget. And a board who I believe work miracles given that most are volunteers. I can imagine our location is a hindrance and the nearest city is Liverpool unfortunately but that budget has been plenty good enough to achieve our aims and to not score for several hours at home in the run in has been criminal.

I think it’s quite the opposite and we are one of the best located sides in the division. We have players on our books from Cheshire, Merseyside, North Wales, Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire and the West Midlands. Most of the rest are extreme North, South or flanked by the Sea on one side. It feels like very few places are out of reach for us.

The quote he made was before his first season started during the evening we picked our season tickets up but yes, granted he was a complete loon.

I thought the support was pretty decent yesterday given the shambles the performance descended to? I agree, the fans got behind the team well, until the second goal went in. For me social media and forums have replaced going to the pub having a good old belly ache about what was wrong in the match but it's now a much bigger audience. If you want to see toxic have a look at the Scunny pages 🤯

Calum in the interview said Alfreton are known for set pieces. They had a free kick 5 yards inside their own half, their goalkeeper took it and all their team were near our penalty box and it caused havoc luckily they didn't score but got a corner. Minutes later we had the same free kick which Weeks took quickly but passed it sideways to our full back, came to nothing. To me that is the difference with our team and others. Calum always wants possession but please please forget that when we have a free kick get it in the opposition box and see what happens.

Our first free kick on halfway yesterday Weeks did the right thing for once and put it in the box only for their keeper to collect it. Abandoned the idea then and reverted to type of rolling free kicks to restart possession each time. As usual, no advantage and we don't get anywhere. I get not wanting to lump balls up against a side like them in open play but for free kicks you can throw Burke, Williams & Burton up. They had no pace to counter us either.
We struggle to score from open play and waste set pieces, an awful combination.

Problem with our squad, even if we get it into the box where's the 6ft+ target man to get on the end of it?

To be fair though he didn’t look the same player that he was at the start of the season and before his injury. Was never going to be a prolific goal scorer though

Noticed that Chorley won again, third and flying, probably will catch Scunthorpe. Frankie Maguire announced as man of the match again and literally every other week as well. Binned off here. I've only missed one home game this season and can't remember him playing.

I've only missed one home game this season and can't remember him playing. I saw his debut when he came on at Banbury, and was impressive. Never really had a chance nor fitted into a system that worked. Our midfield lightweight diamond has been the issue all season. When forced to change it due to Glendon's injury, the alternative with Roberts at the back and some players using width worked at Buxton. Madness that Cal then went back to what hasn't been working for most of 2024.
