That opening ceremony was rubbish.
I suppose points for giving something different a go, but just didn’t work for me.
The flame/balloon thing does look good mind.

Didn't watch it and won't be watching it until they get rid of that Dutch volleyball player who is a convicted rapist the Olympics has no credibility now

Opening ceremony seemed a mess from what I saw of it. I kept switching off.
Probably a sure sign that I'm an old man now that the only thing I liked was watching boats go down the Seine with people waving flags on them. All the singing and dancing was just annoying!

For those that missed it, I suggest you watch Tom Pidcock in the mountain biking. An awesome performance.

Another reason not to watch the Olympics now is bob Ballard has been sacked for making a sexist remark fine but the ioc has allowed a nonce to play I don't get it I'm no fan of the IOC, but the disgusting decision to select Van de Velde lies with the Dutch selectors. Legally, he has served his time, been rehabilitated and is now allowed back into society, so the IOC don't really have any grounds to ban him. If they start issuing bans for criminal convictions, is that a catch-all, or do they need another committee to decide on which convictions deserve a ban? What about where different countries have different laws, so somebody could be guilty of a crime in one state, whilst another nationality wouldn't even have a caution for the same offence (homosexuality, for instance). That said, no matter what system of rules you follow, Van de Velde's case should be at the very top of the list of serious convictions and, IMHO should never have been released after just 13 months, never mind selected. I can't conceive of any situation where a person can rape a 12 year old and then be chosen to represent their country. VdV has also been very vocal about all the 'nonsense (nonce-ence?) media coverage' and angry at the fact people brand him a paedophile, showing no remorse for his actions, other than the fact that's it's hurt his image. - During his sentencing remarks, the judge stated, "Your hopes of representing your country [as an Olympic athlete] now lie as a shattered dream" and "He [Van de Velde] has lost a stellar sports career being branded a rapist. Plainly it is a career end for him". - Obviously not, when the Dutch selectors put the chance of gaining a medal above common sense and decency.

I’d like to think it’d never happen in a million years for GB but then there’s examples of footy players with dubious backgrounds being overlooked. His team mate is in a strange position. If he says he’s not going to team up with a peado then I assume his place would just go to someone else.

Hopefully he doesn't win a medal & is booed every time he plays.

Any thoughts on this boxing controversy?
From what I understand, these two boxers were born as women, but there's controversy over their testosterone levels. But isn't that just using the body you've got to your advantage, in the same way that it's an advantage to be tall in basketball, short in hockey and triangular in swimming? Plus it seems to be getting overlooked that the Algerian has lost nine fights against other women.
What I really don't get is there's a certain section of feminists like J. K. Rowling who are sceptical of trans people and insist that "women are women and men are men", so I would have thought they would be championing these two boxers for identifying as women, but they seem to be the ones who have it in for them the most and are saying they don't fit their definition of women. It's almost as if they're just pricks.

It's almost as if they're just pricks. There was always a debate over the South African middle distance runner Caster Semenya (sp?) who pretty much looked like a bloke. And going back to when I was younger and had more interest in track and field there was a Czech female runner Jarmila Kratochvilova (sp?) who even back then you questioned her gender.

And still holds the woman's 800 metre world record to this day! That was set in the 80's I think.

Me, being Welsh, and a mate in the pub, English, always have a bit of banter about sport.
When he jokingly asked me how many medals Wales will win at the Olympics I told him to watch out for Emma Funicane to which he said "who?"
I think she will be a household name by the end of the games and not just amongst us people who have an interest in cycling.
