What a fantastic job a Chester LEGEND is doing at Curzon Ashton. Currently sitting pretty in second place behind Scunthorpe at the moment, away wins at South Shields and Kings Lynn, a narrow 0-1 home defeat to champions-elect Scunthorpe in midweek, made the playoffs last season. All this with a lower end budget and the squad they’ve got too - massively punching above their weight and Mahon’s managerial stock is rising - definitely one to keep an eye on.
👏 👏 👏

Wasn’t really the point of the thread tbh. More that a former player of ours is now in management and doing a cracking job - one to watch.

I agree about Craig Mahon.Doing a great job with small home crowds. The Blue and White have done an interesting article on Ex Chester management reunions. They are Neil Young,Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley and Steve Watson plus Craig Mahon.

With a fraction of our budget When are we going to be champions elect ? But is that true? Curzon get a load of income from the 4g pitches and backers. Judging by the number of players moving both ways between the clubs there can't be too much difference in wages.

You can say that but with the likes of George Waring and Craig Hobson having featured for them under Mahon then it isn’t as simple as that. They’re definitely punching with him in charge.

It’s Curzon Ashton mate. Volunteer committee, seen their squad? And their attendances?
Their Chairman was on Facebook the other week asking the local community page how to engage the community to come down and watch and increase attendances.

Judging by the number of players moving both ways between the clubs there can't be too much difference in wages. Yes, they don't have anywhere close to a top budget but they do have a little bit more money than many think. The 4G pitches bring in a fair bit. They're also in a prime location for Gr Manchester based players, they don't concede as much of their wages to Esso like some of our players do.
Mahon did well last season, the only question mark he faced was how he'd do in the transfer market in the Summer but he somehow managed to snatch Buckley-Ricketts from Warrington, fair play.
Ultimately Ashton-under-Lyne and the nearby area just have too many clubs, with Ashton Utd, Stalybridge and Droylsden as well. Bit like Northwich who have Vics, Witton, 1874 and Barnton. If there was just one club they'd be quite a force with proper crowds.

They also tend to have decent FA Cup runs, which helps. Similarly Warrington. All those early FA Cup exits in the B&J years really didn't help us!

Their Chairman was on Facebook the other week asking the local community page how to engage the community to come down and watch and increase attendances. Thats called fan engagement. All clubs do it, rich and poor. Completely irrelevant. Curzon have got a good well put together side with a good manager and a good budget. They’re not the little guy punching above their weight that people think. You could of course take Brackley and think the exact same but we know thats a different story.

Every manager employed by this football club gets a fair crack of the whip and every opportunity to succeed. We are not a hire and fire outfit. When a manager is relieved of his duties it's long overdue. People discussing games, players or formations isn't going to put anyone off applying for the managers role.

Still think getting rid of him for John Johnston plus 25k we paid for him is one the worst bits of transfer business this clubs ever done.
What a player what a servent made up he’s doing well

What are you on about? The LADS didn't want him here, was obvious. Anyone still left over from previous regimes, they saw a threat.

Him turning up at Guiseley in short order after leaving to "spend more time with his family" playing for his local club did stink a bit. Mahon on the other hand was a player I was sad to see depart.

Was never as big a Mahon fan as most of our fans seem to be. People remember his best games but I think a lot of the time he was average to poor.
Served the club well though and good to see him doing well as a manager. And yes, the Johnston deal was an awful bit of business. Johnston didn't seem to enjoy the expectation that came with playing here. Probably says a lot that his only good performances were the ones behind closed doors.

It’s Johnston. 😉 Mahon did have spells where he was ineffective but that’s going to happen at this level. When he was on it he was brilliant. Stockport, Southend and Barnsley he was class. Always worked hard for the team and a great servant and our longest serving player. Chester legend.

He left us for Kidsgrove, but then soon after signed for Guiseley who were in the same division as us at the time.
