There was a reality show - can’t remember what it was called - where discarded footballers were given a second chance.
They played Curzon Ashton in a friendly and the footage was really up close so you could hear everything going on between the players. The stick Mahon gave those kids was something else. It wasn’t a friendly to him.

On the few occasions was able to watch us during his time, as i am South based, he was a stand out player. However we have a great manager so no need to consider him.

Still think getting rid of him for John Johnston plus 25k we paid for him is one the worst bits of transfer business this clubs ever done. What a player what a servent made up he’s doing well absolutely shocking business by Bern and Jono, JJ was a really poor signing and shows how poor their recruitment was.

No doubt about it just seems it never worked out for them when they paid a fee for a player though George Green an example

Funny ones Bern and Jonno. Recruitment questionable, not brilliant tacticians and young development non-existent, but overall I do rate them as managers, and their record over their careers is pretty good.

TBF to them it must be hard to sell the club to players. No training ground, moneys probably not that great. I think they did well with waht they had, calling in favours from players they knew etc.

I don't really get your point, they wasted 25K but its ok as the signed some other players, so has anyone come in to buy Glendon and Weeks for 25K

Link
Also to be fair Murphy paid the 25k entirely. Mahon was the loss in that deal not the 25k.

Point to any top manager in the world and there will be a fair few high profile, big money (£10s of millions) signings that didn't work out for them, but they will also be judged on the signings that did. Weeks & Glendon are two of the best signings this club has ever made, certainly since reforming, and have easily given us much more than 25k's worth of value, so to wholesale call B&Js recruitment 'poor' is doing them a deliberate disservice. .

Yeah Mahon plus cash for that useless fraud Johnston was a disgrace. Our fan-owned club should never be paying a transfer fee for any player IMO. As I touched on earlier, the LADS were jealous of the standing Mahon had with the club and the fans, they wanted their own pals in and he was frozen out pretty quickly.
Still a Chester legend.

As much as you can rightly criticise the Mahon/Johnstone transfer they deserve praise for signing Asante who couldn’t get a game in the division below at the time, who was absolutely unreal from day one. So your assertion that their recruitment was very poor is at best harsh.

Does anyone know whether we use data to make new signings, like in the higher leagues?
I'd be interested to know the whole process works - how our scouting works etc.

He often mentions players stats relative to each other & others in the league in a way that suggests he’s tracking it all & id imagine he uses that as a factor in deciding who to sign.

Been very good since, though.

CM was a good player for us. The problem was that he is very lightweight and easily pushed off the ball. His ‘good’ games started to be around one in 3. And his starts in the team were becoming less and less. Nice lad but football is not about niceness it’s about winning

You’re right, it is about winning. And he’s doing a very good job of winning - Curzon are second in the table, the LADS who got rid of him are second bottom.

I found it really funny when they played Curzon Ashton and after the game George Scott said how there number 16 was smaller than him but he wanted to be like him on the pitch. I think Craig Mahon made a lasting impression on him 😂😂😂😂 I do wonder if any of them made it and are still in football ? does anyone know ?

With a fraction of our budget When are we going to be champions elect ? But is that true? Curzon get a load of income from the 4g pitches and backers. Judging by the number of players moving both ways between the clubs there can't be too much difference in wages. Their chairman is a bit of a character and was in the LL after they played us last season. He said our budget was 5th best in league. I spoke to Albert at the Gloucester match towards the end of the season and he said ours was around or above the middle. I wouldn't be surprised if Curzon's was about the same as ours.
