Turning our focus to the FA Trophy this weekend! Feeling optimistic about our chances here. With Gainsborough having already progressed to the second round of the FA Cup, I can’t imagine the Trophy will be their priority. For us, however, it’s absolutely crucial.
Prediction: Gainsborough 1 - 6 Chester. Let’s make it count!

Guisley come into this match bang in form, running riot, banging goals for fun. However, the same can’t be said for them at the other end, where they seem to ship just enough goals to keep things interesting.
Since Cal got his tactics from the back of a fag packet that Mike Bassett gave him, the 4-1-2-1-2 has worked well, gaining 6 points out of the last 9.
I predict a high scoring game littered with errors with the odd moment of genuine quality.
Guisley 2 v 3 Chester

I would really love to see Chester at Wembley, but this is a competition which doesn't appear to be very high on the wish list. Hope we win, but wouldn't be surprised if we lost.

We all make mistakes! In fairness, I was planning to drive to Leamington in Derbyshire and planning to do it last Tuesday…

When I was the media manager at Connah’s Quay Nomads I remember we booked the coach for the players to an away game at Caersws (near Newtown, Powys, mid-Wales)…
… coach driver took the team to bloody Caerwys near Holywell.

Many many, mooons ago I remember my late brother organising a bus to Newport. They thought the timings of the trip to be a bit tight. The bus driver took them to Newport in Shropshire instead of Newport South Wales.

How many leagues below us are they?

They’re in the tier below us.
They’re joint-lowest ranked side left in the FA Cup along with fellow seventh-tier Kettering Town and Harborough Town (different regional division).

Gainsborough have already won away at Boston and Darlington in the FA Cup this season. You can see them treating this similar to an away game tactic wise.
0-0 after 90 minutes and Gainsborough win 4-2 on penalties.

Don’t really have any interest in this really.
Should be an incentive that the winners automatically get into the 1st round proper of next years FA Cup or something with a bigger prize fund.
I’ll jump on the bandwagon if we get Wembley don’t get me wrong….

My brother's best man nearly organised a stag night in Bangor near Anglesey following a day at Bangor-on-Dee races, before I pointed out to him that they're not the same place!

How can anyone not be interested? There’s a genuine chance for some big days out against top teams and even a shot at Wembley!

I won’t be heart broken if we got beat tomorrow. However I think it’s an important game in the sense that it can help to build momentum and give us a bit of confidence and because we have got a small squad it’s not like we can rotate for it.
It’ll be one of those tight bitty games where there will only be a goal in it, but for who I don’t know. We’re weirdly the underdogs in this given Gainsboroughs cup form.

I say the same thing every year, but I really want us to give the FA Trophy a good go because it’s an opportunity for us to get to Wembley for the first time, a chance to play against new teams, it can help build momentum, and if I wanted us to be dumped out of it, then I wouldn’t bother making the long journey to Lincolnshire today. I’m expecting it to be a tricky tie today, because despite Gainsborough Trinity’s lowly position in the league below, they have a lot of games in hand due to their heroics in the FA Cup, and they’ll be using that pedigree as motivation to cause an upset today. Regardless of what side Calum McIntyre decides on, we still have to be winning games like this. Two very tough league games against Leamington and Chorley will follow this, so hopefully we can pick up a confidence-boosting win going into those clashes, as we have to start being more consistent.
Our previous match saw us travel all the way down to Suffolk last Saturday, as we beat Needham Market 0-1 away in the first ever meeting between the two sides. We left it late, but it really doesn’t matter because the three points is all that matters, and that could prove to be a huge win come the end of the campaign. We started off very brightly in the opening 15 minutes, however we tailed off for the remainder of the first-half, as The Marketmen caused us some scares, while we were very sloppy in possession. However, the second-half was much-improved, as our passes and crosses were a lot more accurate. As the clock ticked down it was looking more and more likely that we were heading for an extremely disappointing stalemate, however Harrison Burke had other ideas, as four minutes from time he slammed home a header to make it 0-1 to us. It was reminiscent of his equaliser at Oldham Athletic, and in the grand scheme of things it could turn out to be just as big. We had the chance to make it two in injury time, as Needham’s goalkeeper, Marcus Garnham, lashed out at Kurt Willoughby - resulting in a red card and a penalty for us. Iwan Murray looked eager to wrap the game up, but Kurt was having none of it and duly stepped-up, but unfortunately his poor form continued as Danny Cullum, the stand-in ‘keeper, saved his spot kick. Luckily the referee blew for full-time moments later, as we took the three points back to Cheshire.
Gainsborough Trinity ply their trade in the Pitching-In Northern Premier League Premier Division, where they currently lie in 17th spot. As I touched on further up, they have five games in hand due to their remarkable FA Cup run, so they’re in a bit of a false position at the moment. That cup run currently sees them in the Second Round, a joint-club record, as they’ve had to get through five rounds to get to that stage, with away wins against higher league outfits in Darlington and Boston United standing out. In the First Round, The Holy Blues played out an eight-goal thriller away to Hednesford Town, which eventually saw the Lincolnshire side win on penalties, with another away trip, this time to Harrogate Town, being the reward in the Second Round.
Looking forward to this as it will be another new ground to visit, and Northolme looks like a great set-up for Step Three. I just hope we’ll have a strong side out there as we need to get a run going to build some momentum. I’m predicting us to edge it 1-2 after going behind in the first-half. Hopefully we’ll get the job done in the 90 to avoid the dreaded penalties!!
Score - Holy Trinity (Howe) 1-2 Chester FC (Hugill, Peers).
Attendance - 611 (159 Chester FC).

All four previous meetings amazingly were in the same season. As we've never lost to them let's hope we extend it to five, and get a nice National League team in the draw! Safe travels to those going.
