Is anyone prepared to come on here and say that his comments about Chester's fans being responsible for the slump in 2017 is justified. I continued to attend home and some away matches despite it being obvious that something was wrong. In the end we only stayed up because of a very generous referee at Torquay. I hope I'm wrong in suspecting that he feels he can say anything he likes because he knows that Mark Maguires will always back him to the hilt. Admitting faults and learning from them is a basic tenet of life. Blaming others is a way of avoiding self scrutiny. It COULD be that JMc was attempting to point out that having the crowd on the players backs as soon as they make a mistake, doesn't help their performance. That would be an accurate statement. However, it hasn't come over like that, has it. I attended one of the Squad builder sessions with JMc and Maguire towards the end of last season. The people there made it very clear that they weren't happy with the performances, tactics or the team selections. No-one was positive. He took it fairly well considering, as it wasn't an easy meeting for him, and tried to explain what he was trying to do. He was more honest than he'd been in his post match interviews. I think he just tries to protect his players in his interviews. That is admirable, but makes him look stupid after a number of defeats. You would have hoped he'd learned. I thought when he released a number of players, and signed experienced players this summer that he had learnt and was reacting to the criticism. Unfortunately he's opened his mouth again and dropped himself back in the brown stuff. If he thinks we're negative now, hate to think what we'll be like by October. We actually look to have a reasonable set of fixtures early on. That may help him.

For me you see how it is at Christmas. Does anyone know what our player budget is compared to that of other clubs in the league? If we have the sixth worst budget expect to finish in that area. I dare say this wont be taken into consideration by many. If that's the case why even bother kicking a football? Shall we just have the league finish now in order of who has the biggest budget?

Will anyone from the board speak to Macca about these comments? Someone, who he answers to, really should have a word that these comments are ill advised. It's all unnecessary, there's a lot of positivity about the place right now, for him to come out with that makes me begin to doubt that he has confidence in the team.

Couldn't believe what I was reading. We'd pretty much drawn a line through last season. Season ticket sales were positive along with signings and several other pieces of news. The only person who wanted to talk about anything negative was the boss. What on earth was he thinking? Seriously you really couldn't make this shit up.

Budget strengthened this season by Hughes and Alabi money, but will be low still I would imagine. £400k to £450k according to our Ceo at a meeting I went to.

How dare the manager criticise the fans. The same fans who have loyally supported him without a single negative comment from any of them all season!
I saw this thread before reading the rather innocuous article, there is negativity, even in the first half of last season, when we were looking at the play off places there was a section who got on players backs as soon as they had a poor game. Do these 'fans' not realise that slagging off players and calling them lazy just destroys there self-confidence and their form will nosedive further.
Come on, lets get behind the team, the management and OUR club!

Come on, lets get behind the team, the management and OUR club! You will always have negative fans and a vocal minority at games getting on a players back. If the players and Macca can't handle that then they are in the wrong job. Chester fans were rightfully critical/negative whatever last season, it was miserable. For Jon to bring it up now, when there is a feeling of goodwill and last season is water under the bridge, is ridiculous. Thing is, if we hit a bad patch and fans get restless, he will just come out and spout the same crap again.

I don't normally defend JM however I don't think he has intended to piss everyone off, most people have resigned themselves to another season with JM in charge and given the signings he made were or are prepared to give him a little time to turns things around, we as fans have put the shit from last season behind us and I think in a round about way JM was saying the same however it didn't come across like that, give the manager a chance with the signings he had made, however one bad interview or one bad result it could tits up quite easily. Good luck to the blues for the coming season.

Thing that bugs me the most is that he's telling us not to be negative even though we haven't won at home this year and haven't had a decent performance since December...there is no positives. But pre-season changed that and things we're looking up but all of a sudden he comes out with this dribble!! I properly reckon someone shouted something towards him after the alty game and now he has a bee in his bonnet! the guy is on borrowed time in my eyes....

Didn't say its not worth kicking a ball and i know there will be exceptions. weather you like it or not 9 times out of 10 you get what you pay for. If he does better than his budget job well done.

So, if we have the 23rd smallest budget in the league and finish 22nd and get relegated that is job well done in your eyes is it? To put so much emphasis on the budget and act like it's the sole reason for a clubs success or failure is astonishingly naive. There are many factors that are equally, if not more important. The manager being one of them.

There will be exceptions but if lets say Huddersfield and Brighton go down this year should they sack the manager? I dont think so but some Football fans are always waiting for the next bandwagon or someone to blame rather than trying to create stability

I dont think so but some Football fans are always waiting for the next bandwagon or someone to blame rather than trying to create stability At our level it's all about small percentages making the difference so the Brighton/Huddersfield comparison to me is irrelevant. Stability is all well and good but results have to justify stability. Not the "I have a 2 year contract" scenario so I can say what I like and results are secondary. I personally was happy McCarthy was given the opportunity to manage us after keeping us up, he deserved his chance but without the contract extension he's a very lucky man to still be here. I can't warm to the man, his excuses, his criticism of the people who pay his wages week in week out, he seems and sounds out of his depth. I sincerely hope for the best but wouldn't be at all surprised if we were looking for a new manager pre Christmas .

I'd be interested to know what the objective/target is this season for McCarthy. Personally I think the bare minimum expectation should be to improve on last season's points tally and league position.

And none of the "we have 53 points and are safe" for another season crap. Targets and objectives for the full season are imperative, even if financial incentives have to be put in place for the players to achieve those goals.

Around December last year we were comfortably top half of the league on what people say was a small budget Why were we able to achieve decent results on that small budget in the first half of the season, yet those same players seemed utterly incapable of performing to an acceptable standard during the second half of the season, certainly at home anyway. Something occurred around November / December time that caused the players to lose desire and motivation to win games of football I have my own opinion what that was, but we now have gone SEVEN MONTHS without a home win Personally I Think if we havnt won at home by the end of August with the current crop of players then I think JM should be shown the door regardless

Yeah I totally accept that the quality of player and size of squad at the likes of big budget sides like Forest Green and Tranmere will get better results consistently, the league table would seem to confirm this. What I don't get is the apperent lack of motivation of our players in the second half of the season Think back to the games against Dagenham, Dover and Aldershot , our defenders were busting a gut not to concede a goal against those sides at home. Look at Tom Shaws reaction at the final whistle against Aldershot, he punched the air and looked really pumped up at the result Then look at the performances at home to York and Boreham wood was it on the last day Our players looked totally disinterested and looked as if they couldn't give a s**t about the game I don't accept that the budget or lack of it was/is totally to blame, and that the manager should be able to motivate players to perform better than that Indeed I would expect players to have enough professional pride to perform better than they did second half of last season

I think he worded it poorly though, but I have to say that I agree massively with this. I tend to sit and stand in different places every single game and I am yet to find a single spot in the stadium where there aren't at least a handful of whingers. I'm not saying that I disagree with people having a whinge, but these are sort who pipe up after the first misplaced pass after 2 minutes... "RUBBISH!"... "GET HIM OFF"... "YOU'RE A WASTE OF A SHIRT" etc. What will they ever gain by this is anyone's guess and it certainly will adversely affect the players on the pitch - that, I think, is the point McCarthy is trying to make. I've watched lots of sides in the lower leagues and a fair few Premier League matches, and in my opinion we have it worst by a country mile.

By worst you mean those who are the most passionate supporters ? If you didn't care then you wouldn't bother commenting - It's disappointing that Mccarthy has brought this up now but as I said we should re-set and judge him and the team by the performances- and not on just 6 games as our classic WUM Whopper suggests we are what we are a small budget fans run club who are surviving in a tough division and for the first time since reformation have the experienced players required to cause a few upsets this year - so let's back the Club Manager and Team to the hilt and stop looking for faults before they have arisen

Just to clarify - what I meant by "worst" is that I don't know any other grounds where the players get quite so much barracking if they make a mistake in the first 5 minutes. I appreciate that these fans are passionate, but to me it's just counterproductive to our chances on the pitch, which presumably is what these fans want. By all means, moan to kingdom come at the full time whistle as that won't affect players in the same way as if you get on their back after the first mistake.

I don't think it's a case of the louder you complain the more passionate you are. It just tends to be people that are over-emotional and can't keep a lid on it. Certainly from a players perspective if you're being sarcastically cheers when playing a simple pass it's never going to encourage them.
