We finally play our first home pre-season match tomorrow against Walsall, and I can't wait to be back at it. Hopefully I will be able to watch a successful performance as it is my first look at this new squad. It will be a tricky physical game against a Walsall side 2 leagues above us, which will see Ian Sharps return. Come on city! Score: Chester FC (White, Davies) 2-1 Walsall Attendance: 1,181 (233 Walsall) COYB!

Hope for a good performance that's the main thing, but i think class will show due to the league difference. 1-3 Walsall (Akintunde)

Hopefully they'll be sending a first team down and not a fringe squad. I think the way we have structured our pre-season has been very good, building up to two final games against FL opposition.

Anybodies guess. Looks like they did a macca against solihull, mainly first team squad players first half, second half lots of kids.

0-1 to Walsall, they've also missed a penalty which was saved by our trialist keeper.

1-2 Walsall. Sounds like we've been competitive this half and we've had a few good chances. Promising!

1-2 Walsall. Sounds like we've been competitive this half and we've had a few good chances. Promising! Impressive actually. First half showed good resilience when last seasons lot would almost certainly be 2/3 down. We probably could have been in truth but that fact we were shows improvement. Harry White looks good to me. Had a stronger second half but hard to judge with all the changes..

Decent performance that, pleased. Bit worried during the first ten minutes when we literally just hoofed it as far as we could whenever we saw the ball but we soon snapped out of it. Bell looked a bit lost on Thursday night but he was a right handful today, top notch goal as well.
Pitch looks in terrific nick.

Once again I thought we played much better in the second half. In the first half,we were very much second best with the midfeld non existent. I have defended Chappell in the past but I have to admit he was woeful. A good penalty save by our trialist keeper ad Walsall's goal was a lucky ricochet but nevertheless they deserved their half time lead In the second half a transformed Chester saw Bell score a cracking goal and there was more urgency about the team, only for Walsall to score from another lucky bounce in the penalty area. It is difficult to know what McCarthy will take from these pre season games where the fringe players have been at least on a par with the likely first team players.

To be frank, I couldn't really get that enthused about today's performance, but, hey, it's a pre-season friendly. For me it was simply a chance to look at the new faces for the first time and see how they were gelling.
Overall I'd say we were solid if unspectacular.
That said, we were up against a decent L1 team, their little No.10 was terrific and they passed the ball well and with pace First half I thought we were distinctly average, but we were better in the second half when we started passing and upping the pace a bit (seems to be the story of our pre-season)
Creativity especially in the final third is where I think we're lacking at the moment. I've got a feeling that Dawson may turn out to be a key player this year, he seems to have an eye for the pass. OK, it may not come off every time but he could be the one to unlock defences which our strikers (who appear decent) could exploit.
Some of the ugly traits of last season still seem to be there, the big hoof forward on occasions, defensive frailties, certain players looking lightweight (no names) etc but we've still got two weeks to sort it out!!!

Real change of tone here - either he reads this forum or someone's had a word. Yes indeed, that's the JM we all want to hear. It's honest and respectful, exactly how an interview should be conducted. I think if anything this indicates that his comments have been perhaps taken out of context by some of us, myself included.

Have to admit I agree regards Chappel, shocking pre season or not
