I have to say Macca employed the only tactics that could possibly deliver a victory today. Credit where it's due. It's a given that we are generally set up to perform better away from home and grind out results (although we have relied on the woodwork no less than six times in our only two away games this season - a win and a draw), but it's clear that the problem has been employing the same tactics in home games against perceived weaker opposition and at stages of the game when it was believed to be best to go for the jugular such as after the equaliser last weekend.

If it's another repeat of the Sutton first half or Halifax game then McCarthy will get booed and rightly so. That would be monumentally fucking stupid. The team are showing they can tough it out as the game progresses. Four goals put past top six sides in second half of last two games. So yeah get on their backs for every mistake, like you think you're watching Real Madrid. Blue for life, more like get a life Calm down happy clapper and Have a beer.

I'm not happy at all with how things are going, but we have some potential and the only way we're going to achieve it is by supporting the players. To say it's right to boo the lads on the pitch after one defeat in five and one of the tightest defences in the league is fucking stupid. Nothing less.

That's a good idea, make the players jobs harder. Sounds like some can't wait to boo the team. As I said, sad individuals Yeah let's all stand there and applaud em shall we. Oh and people will boo McCarthy not the players. Supporting the team. What a novel idea...it might just work.

My first match since Torquay away which we won, our last competitive victory, so I am expecting a 0-1 win to the Blues of course. Haven't got through all the pages today yet after a financially unsuccessful day at the races but can you turn up every week!

Regardless of whether the woodwork was our MOTM or whether McCarthy delivered a tactical masterclass, surely we can all have a beer and a night off questioning the manager so that we can actually enjoy a win. We don't get these often, a wi away at a fancied team so let's just bloody enjoy it. I'm sure we we will probably all be moaning again on Monday at 5pm but for tonight I'm having a beer and giving the credit to an under fire manager who is overdue a good win.

Yes, was right for a tough away game, but has to be more progressive and attacking at home.

It just felt great to actually bag a win today, couldn’t celebrate too long as had a train to dash for but caught Turnbull, Mahon and James coming right over to us at the barriers after the final whistle. Fair to say I stood out like a sore thumb with a beaming smile amongst the majority of gloomy looking Aldershot faces up the high street afterwards!
It was a bit of a fortunate win to be fair and quite the turnaround in the second half, credit where it’s due that was a gutsy fightback. I’m glad only 118 of us saw that first half as it was pathetic quite frankly, we touched the ball in their penalty area just once, which was a free-kick floated in by Turnbull. Aldershot’s goal was a really well worked move finished off by McClure, who caused us problems throughout. Second half was much better, a solid away performance. We weren’t giving the ball away, we were on the back foot but actually remained a threat going forwards and attacked with purpose for a change, we weren’t just hoofing it as Chapell, Dawson, Mahon and James worked together better. Aldershot didn’t really have any clear cut chances, other than a late header which could well have gone in.
It’s strange that despite us largely keeping them at bay I didn’t think our back four had their best games, don’t get me wrong they weren’t bad but I felt Halls and Rowe-Turner gave the ball away too much and Astles looked a bit uncomfortable, kept them at arm’s length though in fairness, shows how decent they all are. Mahon worked his arse off, James and Turnbull grew in to the game after slow starts, Dawson was good and Chapell made a big difference when he came on. Much improved effort from Mitchell between the sticks as well.
One thing that did make me chuckle was Paul Turnbull taking the absolute piss out of Shamir Fenelon, who their fans were chanting about constantly. He fouled Turnbull and then gave him all sorts of verbals, should have been booked really. Turnbull’s a wise old head and laughed back at him and shrugged his shoulders. Had him around his little finger.
Enjoyed today but Monday is the acid test for JM, struggle and the crowds will turn quickly again. You can’t keep constantly dropping points at home.

just to add a couple of points to Anders' excellent report: James seemed to play further forward in the second half just behind Dawson up front, as a result he became much more influential; and Turnbull and the much maligned Joyce both did a superb second half job in front of the back four.

Agree with both previous posts. We started passing to yellow shirts late into first half and most of second. I think that intent to play shows we offer some kind of threat. The aimless kicks forward in the direction of akintunde made it easy for Aldershot and they visibly grew in confidence. I was in the Aldershot stand with my 3 nephews (so that's 4 more Chester fans to add to the 118) and had excellent views of all the goals and woodwork hits. Thought at the time that on the second Aldershot bar hit, the ball crossed the line. Would be interested to see replay. Chappells delicate chip that hit the bar was sublime as was his pass to James to sweep in at the far post. Mccombe missed a headed chance 4 yards out and we had 3 or 4 close chances in second half as the midfield advanced further forward. Very entertaining match and could have been 3 or 4 all on another day.

I think I've said this after just about every away game, but our record and performances away from home in 2017 have generally not been that bad. I don't think anyone would be moaning about them if we were doing better at home.
Credit to McCarthy, sounds like he recognised a problem and corrected it, and when you consider that he also had a deal with an absence of strikers, that's a fantastic result and a reminder that he does have some tactical nous. Now please, please let's build on it and get that first home win since the Ice Age tomorrow.

Absolutely made up with the win. Couldn't go yesterday but I was as nervous as anybody waiting for news to come through of the final whistle. Having read the reports there's a few things that worry that me slightly and my general view on things hasn't changed, however, as Si said we just need to enjoy this one.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is all this cuckold stuff? As far as I can see, a cuckold is a husband of an adulteress or a man who raises kids who aren't his own, so I'm struggling to understand the metaphor. Are we just saying he's submissive and allowing his team to be walked over? Sorry if I'm missing something obvious, I just keep seeing the term used and it seems a bit odd and puzzling. Would appreciate an explanation! Our manager has been being referred to by some as a CUCK/cuckold/ CUCKcarthy since about March to be fair so it's nothing new. I'm aware it's been in use for a while (mainly by you!) but I'm started to see it more often and it seems a bit of an oblique metaphor. But hey, here's to fewer 'cuckold' performances like the first half and more 'man of the house' displays like the second!

Full credit to the lads yesterday that is an outstanding win, much needed but a massive suprise, just didn't see it.
Bizarre how we ended up getting a result with all four strikers injured and a midfield in Dawson uptop, seemed to work wonders with the extra midfielder in the centre with Mahon and Chappell wide.
It's massive now that we continue this at home on Monday and let the lads play.
Any link to the goals available?

I said 6 points from 9 on offer, wasn't expecting anything yesterday. I think we should increase that to 7 from 9 with Macclesfield tomorrow and Solihull after that.
Do we know what the situation is with the forwards?
