On the back of two consecutive away games we return to the Deva tomorrow as we will entertain Guiseley at home where we look to continue our fantastic home form. Due to the farcical circumstances at Spennymoor Town Danny Livesey will be forced to miss out on this one, which will mean that there will have to be a re-shuffle in defence. In general this will be a tricky encounter as Guiseley have been one of the surprise packages so far, but we have shown what we are all about against a number of the top sides already so I am confident we will follow suit.
Back on Monday we came away from Curzon Ashton with an emphatic 3-1 win which put us back on track. In the first period we were all over the place as we invited a lot of pressure from the hosts, and were lucky to be level at the break. A Matty Hughes tap-in after just 5 minutes got us off to an excellent start, but the hosts scored a free header to cancel us out. Our second half display was much better as we were a lot more ambitious, and if we had taken our chances we would have won by 6 or 7. Just seconds into the half Akwasi Asante put us back ahead as he found the net following great work by Brad Jackson, then Kevin Roberts sealed the deal by heading home his first goal since his return.
Guiseley will be making the venture from Yorkshire looking to extend their unexpected start to the season. They currently sit in a comfortable play-off position with 5 wins in 9 games, and managed to hold high-flying York City to a goalless draw in midweek. A particular player to look out for is Aaron Martin who has scored 10 goals already following his arrival from Brighouse Town in the Summer. There will be a former blue making a return tomorrow, and that is Marcus Bignot who makes up half of the Guiseley management team. Marcus was Jon McCarthy’s successor in the 2017-18 season, and in my personal opinion I think that he was dealt a bad hand. He had his hands tied back, got sacked in embarrassing fashion, and I would have trusted him to stay on and rebuild us in the National League North (as he got Solihull Moors promoted). Hindsight is a wonderful thing though, and since then Bern and Jonno have come in and are doing an excellent job so long may it continue. Just a few days ago Marcus was appointed as a coach for England Under-18’s, although he will be staying at Guiseley (a bit similar to Steve Burr balancing his role as manager here and his job with England C).
Tomorrow’s match is going to be huge as we look to continue our fantastic start. We need everyone down at the Deva as there is no Premier League dross this weekend, we won our last home match in front of 2,100+ home supporters, and we followed that up with another win on Monday. I’m starting to sense that more ‘’stay-away’’ supporters are getting hooked now which is what we need as our players need all of the support they deserve. Our atmosphere so far has been fantastic home and away, so hopefully we will record another big result tomorrow. Come On You Blues!
Score: Chester FC (Asante, Dudley) 2-1 Guiseley (Martin)
Attendance: 2,031 (54 Guiseley)
My predicted lineup: Griffiths K.Roberts Jones Grand Taylor Jackson Burton Glendon Dudley Asante Hughes
COYB!

Missing this one as I’ve got VIP tickets to the inaugural DevaFest at Chester Lakes all weekend. Shame to miss Biggers’ return, he did OK in difficult circumstances but both he and club have all moved on now. Fancy us to sneak a win by the odd goal in front of a crowd just creeping either side of the 2,000 mark.

Big player missing tomorrow, not convinced by Jones preseason performances but it’s showing every week that it means nothing until the real games start.
Still on the basis it could be Jones for Livesey I’m going a tight 3-2 thriller, with us taking it. Hughes x 2 / Glendon

2-0 to Guisley, Red card for Taylor for running too fast past the referee. Att 1682 (no Livesy, Roberts or Stopforth!) Sorry for being so pessimistic. Sitting behind in C block for years does it to you.

Tough game this one and some key players missing, I am going for a 1-1 draw and an attendance of 1,594, we need the fans behind this game like we had against Hereford.

My match preview:
Includes our head-to-head record against Guiseley (contains a few too many 1-1 draws for my liking), what happened last time out, key player to watch out for, plus a plethora more.

Interesting choice on how to cover for the loss of Livesey. Agree with sqzl, Jones was unconvincing (being polite) pre season. Maybe he's settled and trained well recently. Bern and Jonno will know.
Haven't seen Guiseley this season, but it was land of the giants at their place last season. That might influence selection. Especially with Griffiths reluctant to leave his line. Corners and free kicks could be a real problem.
Likely tough game. We've a few out, which could disrupt the balance. Glendon spent a lot of the first half Monday chasing upfield to pressure Curzon in their own half. Often ahead of Hughes. Leaving Burton and Dudley to cover 40 yards. He didn't do it second half. Presumably he was told not to. Hope he stays in position more today, and lets Jackson and Dudley push on.
I'll go 1-1. Asante. 1650.

A narrow win . . . and with the forecast being decent and no Premier League on, hopefully over 2,000 in the congregation.
Kevin Roberts to partner Grand for me, with Jamie Morgan coming in.
Got to be wary of the lad up front for them who has scored ten in eight games and won the North Player of the Month.

Just been having a chat with a York City mate who is travelling over from Manchester for their game at home to Southport. Asked him about their game at Guiseley; he said at this moment in time they are no mugs - he couldn’t understand how they had lost 2-4 at home to Alfreton fairly recently. Young on loan Guiseley goalkeeper George Sykes-Kenworthy had a really confident game, wing back McNally (6’4”) appeared OK going forward but didn’t like to play against a natural wide player as he was too leggy. Central defender Bencherif, very slow and he too was frightened of any real pace. Top scorer Aaron Martin spent long periods out of the game but wasn’t frightened to shoot on sight at the couple of half chances he had. The player that most impressed my friend was Lee Shaw (think he was at Chesterfield) played in ‘the hole’ and was very tricky and a real handful throughout. He seems to think that Guiseley will change their system for their visit to the Deva with much more emphasis on defence ie five across the back!

Personally I’d have Kev R with Grand and then bring Morgan in and give him a go. That way the experience in the spine in maintained to some extent. Guiseley have Aaron Martin, a superb find from the lower leagues who’s fired 10 in 9 games in the league. He’s a impulsive striker who will shoot from anywhere and any angle so Griffiths will be aware of him taking shots early you’d expect. Based on the second half at Curzon, I’d drop Dudley today, he didn’t really look like he knew where he was playing and fed a terrible pass across the pitch that meant Burton got a yellow to stop a counter attack. I’m a fan of his, just not in the left side position. Hughes/Asante Williams(opportunity)/Glendon/Burton/Jackson Taylor(superb player)/KevR/Grand/Morgan Griffiths

Any chance of a ref from Blacon, Lache or Handbridge to even out last week’s farce?
Even one from as far out as Tarvin will do...
