Let's not let this thread descend into petty insults.
We were shite, they were a bit less shite than us.
Let's go again next week and try playing players in their natural positions. Like you did when you first took the job Jon

Alabi the only positive from today's performance. I see more in him than I do Hughes to be honest. Shows what I know hey? Hughes wasn't in it for most of the game.

Worst performance this season by an absolute mile. We were set up wrong from the start. One up front at home was bad enough, but why start with Horwood in midfield when we had Lloyd on the bench? Alabi was completely isolated with no support whatsoever from midfield, although Richards was worse than crap when he came on. Where was Mahon today? Shaw looked like he didn't know where he was playing and is always much better with the armband on his sleeve, he should have been left as captain for me, George was dreadful today. It's a good job that we got points on the board before christmas as we look like a side without confidence at the moment and I can't see us winning many playing like that between now and the end of season. Not enough workrate, no chasing down and did we win a second ball all afternoon? Oh...can we please have Lynch back in goal? Tranmere will have a field day here. Woeful.

Very poor after the first 1/2 hour. No energy to show for a pass = lump it up in the hope that Alabi can make something of it. Never going to work. Not sure who got MOM but I'd struggle to pick anyone, maybe Hudson for his goal and last ditch tackle. Thought Joyce had a reasonable game in contrast to some comments above.

To be honest, I feared last weekend that that defeat might knock the stuffing out of this young side. Tough when you play well and lose undeservedly. At least this time we got what we deserved and in a way that's easier to put behind you and move on from.

Very disappointing today, Gateshead were there for the taking but we weren't good enough to take advantage. Draw probably would have been fair on balance of play but can't argue with getting nothing from it. We did miss a couple of very good chances though - Shaw early on at 0-0 then Alabi at 1-1 once he completely outmuscled their defender. Roberts should have done better with their first, although there did look to be a foul on Joyce in the build up. Have to question McCarthy today - why take Horwood off for Richards then put Lloyd at left back? Richards needed to come on but I would have taken George or Joyce off. Alabi did a good job despite being isolated. Every game he shows a moment of real quality. No one else really stood out for me. We're in a bit of freefall at the moment, much improvement needed to even finish top half.

That was abysmal. What on earth was McCarthy doing today?
Why so defensive? We are at home and playing 1 up front. You had your chance to bring in a striker on loan McCarthy and didn't.
Where is that width? Lloyd, Mahon, Chapell, O'Brien ALL not starting. Complete joke.
Sort it out McCarthy. That was a complete embarrassment.

Can't wait for Jon and his excuses today I bet it will be the injury changed the game. We play 1 upfront at home infront of tv cameras that was just asking to be beaten and yes that's what happend. It's embarrassing ! Embarrassing - a good word for today. If you were embarrassed by that you must be some sort of sadist who loves to be embarrassed? I was proud of my club today on so many levels in front of a national tv audience. OK - other than the first 20 minutes, when we should / could have changed the course of the game, we were second best. But embarrassed? Fuck me.

Ok maybe a play off place was being abit too optimistic, but we were all thinking it a few games ago, if we beat dover then it'd have been just 3 pts but today was a huge disappointed regardless of the table.

The true disappointment with todays performance is that it un-ravelled all of the hard work which the community team and volunteers have put in, to get the kids teams in front of the camera's. I might add that the Kids playing for up from the BT Camera's was the ONLY highlight of todays game. We cannot afford another dire performance against Tranmere up coming, in fact we need the exact opposite. Plenty of people in Chester that don't attend game's will have been watching on tv today, great performances on the tv will get a few additional bums on seats, ones like today will only reinforce negative stereotypes of local non-league football.

I love Macca, but he’s had an absolute shocker today. The line-up, the formation, players out of position, all of it was just awful and it was an ugly watch. I was getting really frustrated watching it because I felt it was just so self-inflicted. He’s talked about going back to basics all week and then comes out with an overthought and overcomplicated mess on the day. It reminded me of Burr’s management last season. I felt a bit sorry for the players really, I could see them looking unsure of where they were supposed to position themselves and they were getting frustrated and started yelling at each other.
Take Wade Joyce for example, excellent last week just sitting deep in front of the back four winning the ball and passing it five yards to someone else. What you need away from home really. Today, at home, he wasn’t as deep, he was trying to drive forward and create things and it just isn’t what he’s good at. We’ve got Vassell on the wrong side, Hughes looking awkward out of position, Alabi with nobody anywhere near him and end up with Lloyd at left back FFS, just such an awful disjointed unbalanced mess. We’ve got god knows how many wingers sitting on their arses on the bench and in the stand and then go and play like that.
There’s nothing to be concerned about in my opinion, recent performances have been fine. I just think the manager has got it so so wrong today unfortunately.

You can't say we're a poor side, but we win games here and there because other sides are poor or worse. That makes us an average side, which is probably about accurate as the league table shows.

I think that's the next step for both the players and Macca isn't it? He's proved that he can make a silk purse out of a pigs ear, but today he had a bit more strength in depth and tried to out thunk it. Back to basics Macca - learning curve!

Pretty depressing stuff really. For the first half an hour we played some good stuff and deservedly took the lead. But then a calamity of errors led to their equaliser, a poor pass from Hudson, a poor control from that pass by Durrell, Astles done like a kipper and God only knows what Roberts was trying to do with that shot. That said, at half time we were still well in the game. And then we came out and the back four sat on the edge of the box, with the midfield on their toes and ot was only a matter of time before they scored the winner. I felt we worked hard, especially my man of the match Alabi. And, I'm not wanting to face the wrath of Mrs Hughes but Sam looked like he had a sulk on. Lloyd can't play out wide and Joyce didn't have the greatest of games. We're in big danger of the season going down the toilet at the moment. Which is a great shame because there is a lot to like about this team.

Think Macca needs to stop watching the DVD's so much - that was a tactical mess. That was the best squad he has had to select from since early in the season and what he put out was confusing for everyone. It almost feels like he's trying to give a few lads who haven't featured much a game. Played well in the opening 20 minutes and losing Vassell was a blow as he had opened their defence up on a couple of occasions with his forward running. After he went off it just fell apart. Need a couple of wins from next two games to steady the ship. On a separate note, the crowd was very disappointing considering it was a promoted fixture. Only just over 2,000, with 600 in the south stand.

Lynch Vassell, Hughes, Astles, Horwood Durrell, Shaw, George, Lloyd Richards, Alabi.
... should have been our line up today. Is it really that hard Macca?
