Seems a sideways move at best, but then they do appear to be throwing money about. Can't really blame him if he wants to be paid a bit more.

Looking forward to the video announcing his arrival at the Sandcastle.
Wonder if it will involve pies and pints in the refurbed main stand?

The land in south lancs is a rich sandy loam on a layer of peat moss .... there is no finer potato growing ground on the British mainland .... absolutely no surprise that Ryan has been tempted in that direction ... and I also wouldn't be surprised if Ryan's career sees him one day plying his trade in St Helier or maybe for one of the big two in Cairo.
Good luck big man, it's been a pleasure.

The board can see this as a player who has left due to the wait around with the new manager. I’m just glad we haven’t lost a decent player... yet. Good luck to him, he gives 100% but his fitness is an absolute disgrace.

Think he deserved more respect than he gets from some of our fans. A 100%-er certainly who is pretty decent with a mobile centre half alongside him.

We only started conceding when McCarthy started faffing about putting Hughes at right back and saying something about Blaine Hudson being his best signing ever.

It's a significant loss in my opinion, but not entirely unexpected. The only hint of him staying was dependent on what the new manager says, and due to the time taken to recruit someone then I don't blame him for taking what is likely to be a decent contract. I'm not sure who we are expecting to get in that is better than Astles? The lad has been excellent for us, bar the last few months. And he would run through brick walls to play for us, something we often accuse players of not doing. The question was always his size, but equally we've never had a manager that has put him on a strict diet and sorted that out. On our budget, I'll be amazed if we bring in a replacement as good as him, who is also as committed as him - we'll just have to to wait and see on that one. But hey, lets all crack on with the pie jokes and take the piss out of someone that genuinely took pride in wearing our shirt. I imagine we'll have a load of goobers that will boo him when he plays against us too.

If he sorts himself out fitness wise then he'll be one hell of a player. Unfortunately that's a big if tbh

Seems a bit of a let down that he’s gone there to me. Obviously we couldn’t compete with the contract offered. Astles was decent in flashes but his frailties were there to see.
A good servant to the club to be fair. Good luck to him, obviously apart from when we play them.

Best for both parties that we move on, need a brand new start with new players. Astles always gave 100% but his diet let him down, the state he came back after pre-season was a disgrace. 37 year old Carl Ruffer was in a better physique in the glues.

Judging by what I’ve been reading on here, I must be one of a small minority who is sad to see Ryan leave. Some of the abuse that has been publicised on here has been absolutely ridiculous towards someone who has run through brick walls for us. Maybe he is over weight, but a fair few of our slimmer players haven’t performed as well as Ryan have they? I think that he will turn out to be a big miss for us unless we sign another tough defender. How many players other than Ryan have carried on playing with several stitches in local derbies, along with various other injuries? That is the definition of a committed footballer to me, rather than the current Prima Donna’s of the Premier League who seem to go down all the time.
In my opinion I’m rather gutted that he has signed for a fellow National North team in Southport. It’s a sideways move really and I would’ve thought that he would sign for someone in the National League because of our relegation. He’s still a young player though and definitely has the potential to make it into the EFL one day. If he does lose a bit of weight then he will turn into a better player, but he already is good. As I say, the abuse by some on here has been totally unfair towards Ryan, and I hope this move turns out well for him. Thanks for the memories, especially the 2 goals against Tranmere. Good luck for the rest of your career Ryan Astles!

It's just the type of people that make derogatory remarks are the type of people who put decent people from coming down to the stadium.

The point I've always tried to make is this:
If he lost 5 stone he'd be signing for Southampton
Yet he's still a fat knacker and he's signing for Southport

The fact is, he did play for us and was one of the most committed players during his time here.

I'd be very pleasently surprised if his replacement is as good.
If it hadn't been for Ryan we'd have been absolutely stuffed in some away games. You don't know what you've got until it's gone.
Can't believe the disrespect from some on here. He's been the one to win the headers, organise the back four, bring the ball out and play it forward. Mainly because his teammates weren't capable of doing most of that.

I'm not sure if it's me being naive and maybe all football fans are the same, but not sure why we can never seem to just thank someone for their efforts and wish them all the best. It's as if choosing to leave Chester is some terrible sin, when the reality is we've been run like a pub team for the last couple of years and had nothing but struggle on the pitch - there's hardly lots of reasons to stick around. He's got a better contract elsewhere and it's not as if he's done a Rooney and said he loves the club and then a week later signed for the Goats. Astles has not wronged us at all, and served us pretty well on the whole, so he'll also get a clap off me when he returns.

His career is stagnating in non league because he can't control what he puts in his mouth. It's a travesty because we could have benefited from the lad in terms of performance and future funds if he cared about his career. Massive shame

Good servant but part of a back four that shipped far too many goals and at times he was less than blameless. I wish him well and he probably needed a new start.

Solid player, always gave his all and has surprisingly good quality on the ball. Not a big loss though imo. His lack of pace really shows against quick teams/strikers.

Look guys, nobody is saying he wasn't a committed no nonsense centre back, that's beyond question in my opinion. What, and quite rightly, should have been questioned was the state he came back from pre season in. Watching him trying to frantically run back last season with his manboobs jiggling about was not a pretty sight, the guy is supposed to be a professional footballer for crying out loud!
Until he gets himself in shape, drastically changes his diet and/or portion sizes he will struggle to play higher than the Conference. If he gets seriously fit there's a bloody good player in there

Has anyone thought that maybe he’s just someone with a certain metabolism who finds it hard to shift weight? The idea that he just sits about eating chippy teas is ludicrous, it’s not like he’s a lazy slob on the pitch. At 6’4” and being of a big build, it’s hard to look that athletic. He may even have an eating disorder for all we know. People are way too quick to take the piss.
