Commentary doesn't matter until They ban the England 'band' that churn out the fuckin awful noises while England are playing. I have to turn the volume down so commentary isnt an issue for me. Agree. They completely kill the atmosphere with their 20-odd renditions of Great Escape and GSTQ every game. I seem to remember they had some trouble bringing their instruments into the ground during the Poland/Ukraine Euros. Hopefully the Russians will be just as intolerant!

Does anyone know if the club are doing a prediction competition/fundraiser like for 2014?
I think Banksy set it up back then. I've sent him a message but he hasn't replied.

Remember this game well - played on a baking hot Monday afternoon while we were stuck in school. We managed to persuade an English teacher to let us listen to the commentary on the radio on the wobbly condition that we all wrote a creative writing piece about the game, but then we had a miserable History teacher who refused to let anyone listen to it and literally made us all read a textbook in silence for half an hour. He didn't seem to get on to the fact that everyone was sat with their left hand positioned against their ear to disguise an earpiece. Luckily the second goal didn't go in until just after that lesson finished.

Speaking of the Beeb, there's an interesting documentary on the iplayer about Scotland's much anticipated but calamitous campaign at Argentina '78.
The euphoria in the build up was fascinating - probably the only country to have held an open top bus parade before a tournament even started.
As much as I laugh at the Scots, it's hard not to feel sorry for them by the end of it. Worth a watch.

The article about Lev Yashin is excellent, and very sad.

Does anyone else get the feeling this is going to be a truly awful World Cup. The fact that people will be put off travelling because of the behavior of the Russians in the euros and the fact that the Police will give you zero protection makes for half empty stadiums, Games like Morocco v Iran is hardly inspiring, likewise Saudi Arabia v Egypt. Coupled with, we haven't yet seen the usual over hyped media coverage that England can actually win it this time, whereas in reality, I think I read we have a grand total of zero World cup matches we have won between the entire squad. Referees and their assistants will be under even closer scrutiny and the so called experts like Danny Murphy will plbe telling everyone why the ref should have used VAR etc, when he hasn't a clue. Having said all that, given they have home advantage and Putin has bunged FIFA to host the thing, I wouldn't be surprised if he hasn't done the same for officials and the Ruskis make at least the Semis.40/1 to win it looks a longshot but 8/1 to make the semis looks a reasonable bet. The fact that you expect this World Cup to be boring has blown your cover as a REAL football fan! When has any football match or tournament ever matched our expectations? The total unpredictability of the sport is what makes it so compelling and are we ever right?!!!

I notice Iran, under the stewardship of Carlos Quieroz, are rightly kicking off over Nike's refusal to supply players they sponsor with boots for the tournament due to Trump's sanctions on the country.
Iran are officially sponsored by Adidas so what would Nike do if the individual players they sponsor decide to wear Adidas gear? Can't blame the players!

Spain have sacked their manager, on the eve of the World Cup.
Mark Wright 2004 timing there!

There is always one team that goes into the World Cup in crisis but its normally an African or South American nation that does.
Lopetegui was confirmed as Real Madrid manager yesterday so perhaps the FA suits are up in arms about that.

Where are people planning on watching England's group opener on Monday night? At home. In my comfort zone. No beer, no noise. Just me and the lad. How it was for me growing up. Do I need to get out more? Possibly. Am I happy with this? Yes.

After the group stage, it will be "Gareth, what are we going for, today 4-4-2?" "No, the 7-4-7, because its bigger and there is more leg room", Lol,

Paddy Power are donating £10,000 for every goal Russia score to LGBT charities - and a minimum £50,000 if Russia don't score at all.

Saudi look very poor. Trust me to put Dzagoev in my fantasy team only for him to do his hamstring in after 15 minutes.

They play like what they are - a team of players not allowed to leave their domestic league. Individually they have some talented players but whenever they get to the World Cup they look out of their depth, except their debut in 1994 when they did surprisingly well.

Hard to know what to make of Russia there. Attacked well and look to have some good finishers, but I doubt we’ll see a worse side than Saudi Arabia. Frightening that FIFA plan to add allocations for another 4 or 5 Asian teams to the 2026 competition.
