Super Saturday didn't work out too badly, with all four intercontinental ties offering different styles - if you can call Nigeria's "can't be arsed" a style. Australia showed alot of heart and were desperately unlucky to lose their game, Peru should've won but were let down by poor finishing and I wish people would stop patronising Iceland who are actually a well-organised, decent side.

Changing the subject a bit but if you find yourself in Liverpool’s very hipster Baltic Triangle over the next couple of weeks, there’s an exhibition of over 100 weird and wonderful football shirts on at the Camp & Furnace, plus they’ve got a big screen in there. Managed to swing a visit with the missus by arguing that we were going to an “art exhibition”, and ended up watching the Morocco v Iran dirge with a few pints!

God knows what the Nigerian coach has been instilling into his players, but their tactics were less obvious than Honest Jon's.

Come on you Mex. What a result. Having bet on outsiders to date I thought I had better salvage things by putting the rest of my dwindling pot on Germany and Brazil. For a brief moment I found myself supporting Germany for the first time. I then thought to hell with the bet! A lesson learnt. Looks like Brazil could go the same way. However England are a dead cert so no need to worry....

Got Germany in the sweep at work, so this is bound to be the one World Cup where they’re rubbish.

The commentator said they were an ageing squad, but I think the GK is the only one over 30 …. hardly ageing. According to this their squad has an average age of 27.1, which is the seventh youngest at the tournament. So no, not really an aging squad, although some of the players in it do seem to have been around forever.

Hard to not be pleased with our efforts against France but also what could have been.
VAR is now public enemy 1 with Australia. I just don't see how you can come back 3 minutes later and give the penalty, what if Australia had gone up the other end and scored. Infuriating. Umtiti lucky to not get red for the handball too.
Anyways on to our next game against Denmark with renewed hope

Not really interested in the World Cup but tuned in for some of that Uruguay game. Now I know why I'm not interested in the tournament. I've seen Chester play better football than that. Not in the last couple of seasons!!

I think what yesterday reminded some is that as much as the pundits build up the likes of Brazil and Germany etc, they're not flawless and can be overcome.
Anything can happen in tournament football and that's why being an England fan has been so frustrating - if something does happen we seem to be on the wrong side of it!!
The tournament is more wide open than usual I think this year.

Is it just me or does this seem like its going to be a really poor turn out by the England fans ? They reckon 10,000 have travelled but apparently very quite in Volgograd this morning. A lot obviously put off by the possibility of trouble after what happened in France. A fair old costly trek too!

Belgium not looking particularly convincing here against a Panama side with no real quality to speak of.
Mertens' goal was class but at the back Belgium look a bit ropey - will certainly struggle against a proper attack on this showing.

Can anyone explain why Ashley Young, a proven failure at international level and right footed, is playing left back for England. Baffling.

He never beat a man once, gave the ball away every time, and missed a sitter albeit offside. Him and Young shouldn't start again. Rashford is ten times the player. The referee was crap too!. Justice was done in the end.

Should have had two pens.
Ref was a disgrace.
Alli should have gone off at half time Loftus-Cheek did more in his fleeting performance than Alli had done the entire second half.
Sterling agreed just runs into dead ends but he scares teams half to death with that frightening pace.
Wins a win though.

First 20 minutes were impressive but no surprise the anti English brigade gave the weaker team a chance which knocked England’s confidence. By far superior and deserved the win. VAR was an absolute farce and we were denied 2 stone wall penalties.
Loftus-Cheek looks a right player.

VAR was an absolute farce and we were denied 2 stone wall penalties. Loftus-Cheek looks a right player. The second so called stonewall penalty saw Stones push a Tunisian in the back same time as Kane was wrestled down. Ref could have given either, but opted for neither. I agree that VAR is currently a failure. I’ve always advocated a defender on the far post for corners, in which case Kane’s winner would not have gone in. Two defenders on the line, and one bafflingly in the middle of the goal. Should have been on that far post. England were superior throughout and deserved to win, but the manner of the win ended up as a lucky win. Final group game and goal difference to determine whether England or Belgium top the group.
