Saudi Arabia will surely beheading out soon. Careful.... do you want to cause an international incident.

Saudi Arabia will surely beheading out soon. The team will probably all get taken out on the lash, when they get home.

The stadium for this Egypt v Uruguay game looks barely half full. I had a look at the ticketing websites a while ago and hardly any were available. Presumably a load of suits just haven’t bothered turning up.

What an absolute tosser Jermaine Jennas is! To be fair anybody who turns up in a Jacomo advert immediately loses all credibility!

Poor game that. Uruguay not on song and a bit lucky to win, but saying that the Egyptians looked exhausted by the end. I wonder if Ramadan and Eid are having an effect on the likes of them and Saudi Arabia. Don’t want to sound insensitive, but surely fasting and binge eating can’t be ideal preparations for a sportsman?

Not the greatest World Cup game ever. Thought Uruguay just edged it. Hope the empty seat situation isn't going to carry on through the tournament. You really do have to question the committee who gave Russia this event. Probably one of the most unwelcoming country's in the world.

Not really interested in the World Cup but tuned in for some of that Uruguay game. Now I know why I'm not interested in the tournament. I've seen Chester play better football than that.

You know that England & the joint Spain/Portugal bids that were overlooked would have at least seen games played in front of sell-out crowds. Only ones that sold out & profited from it are Sepp Blatter & Co.

Finally, after a one-sided rout and two absolute stinkers, we have seen a superb game of football and it's no surprise it's come from two of the heavyweights.

What was their keeper thinking? Sick of the BBC commentary and feel sorry for the rest of the Portugal team who obviously contributed nothing to the draw.

Typical that I went and missed the Portugal v Spain game after watching them two borefests earlier in the day. No idea what that Morocco v Iran game was all about but the comic OG at the end summed it up!

Spain should have won it, their passing was superb at times. Credit to Ronaldo but without him Portugal would have lost convincingly.
Fantastic entertainment.

I drew Morocco in our office sweep, what a disappointment that was
Spain v Portugal was at 4am here so I foolishly went to bed and missed it!
Australia v France is at 8pm here today perfect to watch us get thumped by Pogba and the rest

Very underwhelmed by France, but a win is a win! Spirited performance from the Aussies, and great support. Never a penalty, the VAR decision.
Let's hope Iceland can similarly impress against Argentina.

France we're lucky yet they still won, they'll get going soon and go far.

VAR = shite. Wish they’d get rid of it.
Can’t help but love Iceland’s organisation and work rate.

Refs authority is being undermined, players already pestering refs for VAR review. OK, refs make mistakes but generally get most decisions right and it's part and parcel of the whole experience of watching footy. Just let them get on with it! Think it really is the thin end of the wedge and will creep ever more into the game. Hopefully, it will be some time before it permeates down to our level

I think it’s a shame how poor the African teams still are. There’s that quote attributed to Pele that an African nation would win the World Cup by 2000, and I remember Cameroon impressing in 1990, Nigeria looking strong in 1994 and 1998 and Senegal reaching the quarters in 2002. It feels like since then though, they’ve stalled or even gone backwards. Nigeria looked awful in that game. It’s not like Africa hasn’t produced world class players, but the teams always seem off the pace to the extent that even fairly ordinary European nations like Croatia are a class above them.
I suppose it shows how important infrastructure is to football success. You could look at Iceland as a stark opposite. A country with no players anywhere near world class, but a strong sense of resourcefulness and looking after each other. It seems to translate to a strong team spirit and work ethic.

Ghana in 2010 was another, coming within a missed penalty of reaching the semis. I seem to recall the other African sides being poor that tournament though, even though it was played in South Africa.

Yeah, Ghana bucked the trend in 2010 and Algeria looked decent in 2014. Neither qualified this time though and I think that’s part of the problem - good teams don’t seem to stay good for very long. A good example is Egypt, who have qualified for the first time since 1990, but have won the African Nations four times since 1998. They dominated the continent but weren’t consistent enough to qualify for a World Cup.

Visited Iceland recently and they attribute much of their recent success to investing in building indoor football pitches. Not much else to do out there in the winter! Still doesn't fully account how a country of 333,000 people can qualify for successive major championships and acquit themselves well. VIking spirit?

Nigeria showed so little spirit I wondered whether (add the name of any of our recent managers) was now in charge of them.
