Mid table with seven games remaining, and forum contributors are suggesting that our manager should be sacked. One of the said contributors also suggests that part of the Sam Hughes potential 'windfall' should be used to pay the manager off. I fail to see how removing JM, and utilising the 'Sam Hughes windfall' to do so would in any way benefit our club in the long term. At the risk of conveniently being deemed a 'happy clapper' (whatever that is) I personally believe that Jon should be judged on the entire season, and not solely on the post Christmas slide. As such, I feel that he has earned the right to take us into next season. Finally, out of interest, who would these contributors like to see appointed to replace JM ? What sort of budget would he be given ? Would an improvement be guaranteed ? What if the club sunk even lower ? If we carry on playing like we are we'd of been awful for the majority of the season. Tend to agree, BUT if we finish the season in pre Christmas mode then we would have been pretty good for the majority of the season. As I said in my original post, Jon should be judged on the entire season.

I feel this criticism of the players and Macca is a little harsh, we were bullied on Tuesday by Cox and his mates and this interview was clearly frustration at the outcome of the result, performance of the referee and the results in the last few weeks. Two points to really consider, 1 Macca is clearly the right man for the job the style of football has been better this year, we have picked up points in games that we have not been able to in the past. The atmosphere is at the club and the ethos he has created is probably the best in the league aside from Lincoln. Give me the community club feel over the big spenders, if Macca was to go who do people honestly believe would do a better job? 2, We are in the national league and players do make mistakes, everyone in their jobs makes mistakes and I am pretty sure know one is doing it on purpose! Give the players a chance, give the manager a chance, get behind the players, the gaffa and enjoy the next few weeks after all it is a long summer. Questions to ask as a fan: Have we declined in performance this year? No, vast improvement in the style of football and yes with the poor run that we are on the position that we will end up will be better than last season. That says to me it is an improvement. Is it about times fans realise where we are as a club? Yes we are a national league club and it will take 4/5 years to get out of this division if we are lucky. Selling players like Sam Hughes is one of the only ways we will increase the playing budget alongside fans turning up and getting behind the side. Would fans really want to adopt a similar stance to FGR or Easteligh? I can remember the controversy over #piegate, imagine Deva chat if we were to become a Vegan friendly club? It would be great to have a FA Cup run similar to Lincoln, Sutton etc. But I would also prefer to be in a situation we are in compared to Southport/Woking going into the final few games of the season. All in all, football fans love to moan but something to consider the grass isn't always greener we are lucky to have a football club and the previous history of what happened to this club is a prime example of what we do not want to happen again in the future. Give me mid table in the National league with a manager and player that cares about the club than no club at all. Good luck to the lads on Saturday and safe travel to the loyal followers! #CYOB You think the style of football has been better than last season , really ? So why have we lost nearly 1000 spectators ? And the atmosphere at the club is better ,whatever that means . Enjoy the next few weeks ? Unless Jon changes his attitude for a positive one then endure the next few weeks is the more likely outcome . Please dont compare us to Southport ,they are perennial strugglers in this league , although if we carry on underperforming both on and off the pitch we will end up with attendances similar to theirs . Mid -table ? last time i looked we werent in 12th place and unless we amass 54 points in a very poor league we will have regressed . Yes, I do feel the style of football has been better. Pre Christmas we got the resulted needed we haven't crumbled in games and have been unlucky to loose a few. Tactics at times have been different but let's be honest anything was better than the rubbish Burr produced, who clearly didn't get the concept that Ross Hannah was not a striker you can play up front on his own. Torquay away summed up last years style of football when Jame Alabi was the 25 player to play on the left wing! Don't compare us to Southport? Why not maybe it is about time you realise we are not able to compete with the bigger clubs in the league and competing with Braintree, Southport, Woking, Torquay, Solihull,Guiseley, Maidstone, Bromley etc is where we are at as a club. We are above all of these clubs in the league, does that not say to you that we have had a successful season? Small steps and all that, next year we will look to compete again. Plenty of clubs in a worse position that us. I am not saying that I am disappointed we are not in the play off positions or pushing for promotion but look at the size of the clubs getting out of these league on our budget will never happen. We should look to the likes of Dover/Macc/Aldershot and try to adapt a similar route to them and I really don't think we are that far off.

It's very easy to lose sensibility on both sides of an argument with Mass Hysteria which will appear on any forum whether we keep reforming (as we like to do) Devachat 7 will still be the exact same.
Ultimately there are fans all along the line from 'we're the worst team in the division' to 'this season has been a great success'.
The irritating thing for me is YET AGAIN snakes that cling to the club seemingly want to belittle a group of fans who chat about chester regularly in a forum. YET AGAIN it's the same old drivel that DC is wholly negative and full of moaning b*stards. It's not true, and yet its the same old crap time and time again.
No-one has gone to Macca and said 'Oh there was a chap online who said XYZ but done worry there were loads of people who dismissed him, some who kind of agreed and some who saw his point but thought it was extreme'. No. We get a couple of posts and i daresay Macca doesn't have time to be on here and so he gets the snakes' version - leading to this article.
I actually watched the full interview, i recommend some others do to contextualise the comments.
I'd personally rather be on 49 points than 39. I actually wonder that if we'd been mediocre all season people would be happier. I understand we've won alot pre christmas and lost alot after, but it's a damn sight more comfortable than a whole mixed bag of a season and us fighting for our lives now.
Because make no mistake, there's at least 8 teams who would happily swap places with us, happily have our run-in rather than theirs as i've seen on another thread. We're a win away from everyone chilling out, a couple of wins away from a decent tally on our budget. This season of structure from Macca easy eclipses last season and given the bumps we've had along the way i agree with McCarthy, he's done OK.
Its OK to be OK by the way, most people on this forum would assess this season as just that. Yes people will call for your head, but on any forum those are the diametric opposites to those wanting to give you a job for life Macca. Ignore the snakes trying to put this board down, it's the same old shitty agenda they've had for years as they can't accept that as a tool for ideas and engagement there isn't much better out there with such an active group of fans.

Did he say he'd mark some of the papers or something? All a little bit desperate for me. Yes and check for spelling mistakes. Its not a few negative cimments on DC that McCarthy should be worried about, he should be more concerned about the 600 fans who have stopped going to the game because of poor results. First rule of a business - don't blame the customer. But we are not we are the customer, we are the owners and his employers. Bizarre interview with the paper, the man is losing his marbles.

We are a big club in this league with one of best grounds and support base , we should be aiming for play offs every season irrespective of budget McCarthy is always making us out to be tinpot and seems satisfied with mediocrity , a bit of ambition would be nice ! If McCarthy thinks 50 points is a successful season then he needs sacking , we should always be striving for more ! Survival is not success for me it's failure !

I have supported this club for 60 years and have hardly missed a home match during that period, but if I, or anyone else puts something negative on here, some idiot will suggest that we delight in seeing the team lose which couldn't be further from the truth. It hurts like hell when we lose. Call me negative if you wish, but I just can't see any future with McCarthy in charge. He may be a nice bloke and all that but his negative tactics and terrible results have seen gates slump dramatically and has cost the club a lot of money. The slump along with the fact that he is offering most of the squad new contracts, will ensure our season ticket sales fall to an all time low because there will be little or no confidence for the following season. He tells us to judge him on the season not the last 3 months, ignoring the fact that we had our good results when Sharpes was here and without Sharpes he looks totally out of his depth.

whats annoyed me the most about macca is last summer he said we would have 4 strikers in the squad i was pleased with the 3 we had but once akintunde got injured it was obvious where we needed to strengthen so why go 5 months without bringing a striker in because i for one thinks richards needed a massive push from october as he knew it would be easy for him there are strikers in leagues below who would love to play for the club

It's like incessant mood hoovering that sucks the energy out of people. I actually think that Jon is trying to build something, to adopt an approach that is looking to develop a young squad into consistent performers to the best of their ability. It has been painful to have a bad run, but I firmly believe Jon McCarthy deserves support from the fans as he tries to build something positive.

Do you also think he was right in making the comments he did about Deva Chat. To be honest Billy, I would have preferred it if Jon had not referenced forums in his interview with the press and Dee 106. Regarding the poor form, well I won't lambast the manager for the bad run, but in fairness, I didn't say he was the best manager in the world when our form up to Christmas was good. I really enjoyed it though. What I do think is that he deserves better than judging on the last 3 months. He is an excellent fit with the club in many ways and works incredibly hard for us. Regarding the fall in gates, well of course I am worried as we need every penny and yes, results impact the number of fans who turn up. I don't blame him though. Like you, I have been a supporter for many years and I know that there are many reasons that gates fall. I have been to many league 2 games at Chester where gates were sub 2000. So no, I don't blame him, but it would be naive to say I'm not concerned. It's just that I want to offer support, not derision and trust the man and our elected board to do their best to get through this. My position won't change if they fail Billy. We need stability if we are to grow and develop. Good luck to them.

To be honest it's a strange and difficult one this!
Posters such as Richard, NFBF (other forum) are deemed to be positive posters and yet they are happy to be watching the club slowly die. They go all defensive when questions are asked about anything from the manager to what the paid staff actually do for the club and seem to be happy with falling gates etc etc. How long will the club survive like this???
People like Billyw and Sirfred post ways they would like the club to improve and yet are deemed negative! At least they tell it how it is and have the long term of the club at heart! Negative I think not
From my own perspective I stopped going the day Durkin increased prices to £18 without consultation with any of the fans in what is supposed to be a community fan owned club and I know many others who have done the same

That's true - all down to the lack of moderation. Behave yourself. This forum is always monitored by 3 mods who remove anything abusive, you also have a report function to highlight anything you'd like removing. If we were to do anymore then we spill over into the same territory as the other DC when people were getting banned for having strong opinions. If Sir Fred wants to start a McCarthy Out topic after every game then I might not agree but I'd never dream of moderating it as he is perfectly entitled to his free speech and opinion. Sorry, but if you're not prepared to moderate personal attacks on people and bad language, then you shouldn't be a moderator. I'm not saying to go as far as the first DC, but this copy DC is mainly populated by trolls.

There were two posts I moderated yesterday, one for over excessive language and one for a personal attack, you will see the reason for the moderation in the edit box in the bottom right corner of each post, there is also a history archive of reported posts, just had a quick look through and I can't see any reported posts by yourself. As for being populated by trolls, we now have 461 registered posters, that's 461 more than the old devachat had in the last two years. Our poster with the biggest contribution is 14 years old, loves the club and is full of energy, we also have another poster who has set up an online collection to try and improve atmosphere in the HM. I wouldn't say this place is full of negativity either, I would say there is a good balance at the moment, which is surprising given the results on the pitch in recent months. If you want a forum with nothing but positivity then please feel free to comment on the old DC, as Devon Blue has banned anyone with anything negative to say, that is of course if you have a user name, as it's not taking any new members. There are trolls on here yes, they are not being moderated? I don't think so Get yourself registered too, as I think once we have enough registered users, the option to post as a guest may be reviewed.

That's pretty poor to be honest. Never a good sign when you start calling out individual fans (who are entitled to an opinion even when they spout bollocks). Macca needs to accept and admit this is a very bad run. I'm not advocating sacking him at all and I also don't believe the team are shirking the task in general, but it ain't great and if it wasn't for the decent run earlier this season we would be right in the shit at this point. I think ultimately we are not that good a team, and in the grande scheme of things we have 1 stand out national league player (Sam Hughes). All the rest are pretty average (or not really up to scratch) and isn't that what you would expect for us with our relatively small budget? THe job of Macca is to make them more than the sum of their equal parts and you could say that earlier this season he was doing that. What were we doing in October that gave us numerous clean sheets in a row?
I'm genuinely confident we will stay up no problem, my biggest worry is that he seems to want to sign up most of this years squad again. I think we need to clear out a good few players - might as well take a chance of some different average players. We also need to work out why players such as Lloyd and Vassell have gone completely off the boil since Christmas.

We are both volunteers who do our best to make things better. Before we both retired we also did our best to contribute in terms of sponsorship. I can't see how you can possibly justify how we could be deemed as happy to watch our club slowly die? That is just nonsense. I make no apology for replying to other posters who see things differently and I respect them for offering different points of view with the good of the club at heart.

Exactly. People have strong opinions and they voice them, that doesn't make them a troll, I think it's fairly obvious when someone is trolling and they posts removed or banned. As you say, report any trolls you might see and we will take action, easy.

I don't think the most ardently negative supporter of this club could deny there has been some really positive times in this season, where we've looked a team who could punch above our weight and be a match for most in this division. I'm thinking Dover, Eastleigh, Aldershot, Sutton etc.
Surely we've got a much better chance of bridging that gap with continuity? We cannot and should not become a sacking club, especially when I think lots of us went into this season fearing a relegation battle. JM is right with one thing in the interview, in that the culture of our support needs to change. It seems like we've got a sizeable minority who thrive in our failings, who begin to audibly grumble and barrack players after 15 minutes without scoring a goal, who demand the manager's head when we're on a poor run of form. I know all clubs have those supporters, but ours seeem even more hysterical than the rest.
If we're going to get where we want to be, and I believe we will, it's going to happen slowly. Our fans have got to support what we're trying to do, not threaten to boycott when we lost a game to a bankrolled village team.
