Yes there’s that, but there’s also we’re legit a fascist state. Who would you have in government though at the moment? I don't think any option is good, admittedly, what we have at the moment, is probably the worst option but there really isn't any kind of opposition. Until that emerges, we can all moan about how bad they are, but this is the time where political parties should be offering something different, not the same useless rubbish.

Until that emerges, we can all moan about how bad they are, but this is the time where political parties should be offering something different, not the same useless rubbish. The problem is, at the risk of being told to get over it, "something different" failed badly at the last election. Labour and Starmer's response now seems to be offer something the same as the party in power. It's no surprise to me that this strategy appears to be faring even worse, and this at a time when the flaws of the government have never been so obvious. The reality is that there are plenty of options for who to vote for, and there is a broad church of political views within each of these parties, so really people need to vote for the general ideology they most identify with rather than the party's leader. In my case, I think that's Labour.

To be fair, I do think we're now at the point whether the mental stress and misery caused by lockdown is more harmful than the virus.
It's not about the economy for me, they've buggered that up with Brexit anyway. It's about people's wellbeing. I was all for taking lockdown very seriously last year, but everyone whose life is seriously at risk from the virus has had two jabs now, or at least been offered them. We need to get out of this unpleasant environment of mask wearing and social distancing. I think this whole thing has aged everybody.

Chances are we’ll be back in lockdown by September looking at the staggering rate of infections and hospitalisation currently.
Today’s announcement, totally flying in the face of the scientific and medical experts AND public opinion re: social distancing and face masks, is an admission of failure.

Happy with this news. Life needed to resume eventually. Cases will rise but as long as hospitalizations and deaths are low then it's manageable in the same way flu is. Of course nobody wants to accept that people will die from it but people die from all sorts, and if we can't get back to some kind of normality now then when would we ever be able to? Can't wait to get back to everything properly. I'll still probably pop a mask on in supermarkets etc, but other than that I'll be cracking on now that I'm double jabbed, happy days.

Massive gamble, especially with the stakes so high and the delta variant spreading out of control. Clearly this is being done to appease the Tory lunatic fringe and the right wing media.

One thing I certainly don't understand is what the point of the delay from June 21 was. If it wasn't safe then, I can't see how it would be on July 17.
But surely, the main point of social distancing and masks was to stop the spread of the virus while we didn't have a vaccine? It can't be a long-term solution.

“It is frightening to have a ‘Health’ Secretary who still thinks Covid is flu, who is unconcerned at levels of infection.” - Professor Steve Reicher, SAGE
“The epidemic is significant and rising at the moment, I would wear a mask in many circumstances.” - Professor Chris Whitty, SAGE
“Masks are particularly crucial indoors and in crowded spaces.” - Sir Patrick Vallance, SAGE
Whitty was also at pains to stress that the ministers make the decisions regardless of the advice the scientists give - also adding that there will still need to be a degree of social distancing even after legal restrictions are lifted.
Leaving the legal requirement to wear face masks in shops and on public transport in place was the single easiest thing that could’ve been done to attempt to stem the alarming rise in cases currently and to keep millions of key workers in retail and public transport safe, but nah. The Health Secretary himself has said that we could be seeing 100,000 new cases daily (with new variants less affected by the vaccines we have already had) but is happy to fan the flames of the bonfire of restrictions to keep people safe.
Thankfully it seems the public are having other ideas, with snap polling from SavantaComRes demonstrating that 76% will continue social distancing, 74% will wear a mask on public transport, 71% will wear a mask in shops and 52% will limit their socialising only up to five people. Remember, wearing a mask protects vulnerable others from you.
The scientists don’t support the relaxing of restrictions and the majority of the people don’t want them.

On the same day Johnson announced the end of compulsory mask-wearing the Tories introduced a bill for compulsory voter ID.
Incredible that Covid-19 is still a serious problem and voter fraud is an invented one, but that’s Tory priorities for you - their political survival is their only priority. Absolute scum of the earth.

Was only quoting the snap poll results - majority will be continuing with face masks and social distancing. Letting people make their own choice whether or not to endanger the lives of other people in close proximity to them? We should legalise guns in that case - let people make their own choice to carry them and use them. To answer your final question, perhaps it should be when cases and hospitalisations aren’t rocketing up? Just a thought. This so-called “freedom” day for millions is a day of dread for millions of others with compromised immune systems. A matter of life and death for them.

LOL I even totally forgot that Johnson lauded the racist England boo-boys’ “right to peacefully protest and make their feelings known” booing their own team in a major football championship, but has slapped a ten-year sentence on anyone marching in support of the NHS. It’s not far off Trump going easy on the KKK and “Proud Boys.”

Maybe I’m not just not a selfish person🤷🏻♂️ Will say it again - the scientists don’t support the relaxing of restrictions and the majority of the people don’t want them; the actual government have said it’ll lead to 100,000 infections a day in a month or two and they’re fine with that (obviously - because it’s been herd immunity guinea pig experiment right from the start), and this “freedom day” is genuinely a day of dread for those with compromised immunity.

I won't be making anyone feel bad either way, we all take responsibility for our own actions and health so it's important to respect that.

Don’t know what all the the fuss is about from some people over “finally” removing masks - wearing one doesn’t infringe on your human rights but can help protect other, more vulnerable people from the virus if you are carrying it (knowingly or unknowingly).
Why can’t we just be kind, and do what’s right? Instead of the “I’ll be cracking on now I’m double-jabbed, happy days” - maybe not so happy for the woman with cancer stood in front of you in the queue if you’re carrying the virus, eh? People need educating about the real efficacy of the double vaccination, they think their immortal and cant get infected or cant pass it on - both untrue.
I read about a guy sat next to a Japanese woman on public transport once who was wearing a mask (this was well before Covid), and when asked why she simply replied “I’ve got a cold at the moment and I don’t want to pass it on.” - be kind, do the right thing.

I don't fancy wearing a mask for the rest of my life, but you are right in that it doesn't infringe too much, so whilst cases are on the rise I'll be continuing to wear one in supermarkets and public transport. The fact is that covid will be around to stay for a while, so we have to learn to live with it the best we can whilst returning to the freedoms that are key to our wellbeing and mental health. Nobody can protect everyone forever, there are other illnesses that do the rounds that we'd adapted to live with and covid will be another one of those. Thinking of matchdays, I'd probably wear a mask whilst getting a pint from the bar in the Blues Bar, but not for being on the Harry Mac. It's about making sensible personal choices, and not hammering people for not conforming to your way of thinking.

Fair enough it is about personal choice and allowing the population to choose wisely when to socially distance and wear a face mask but how many people can you trust to do that?
We’ve had dickheads licking items in supermarkets and spitting at railway station workers who then later died.
The original point I was making a few posts ago was about the TIMING of the restrictions being lifted, why now when cases, hospitalisations and deaths are rocketing again?

Yeah you'll get dickheads whether there are restrictions or not sadly, that's life. The timing is most definitely up for debate but with school holidays coming up I think it's probably a fair time to trial a way of living with this disease rather than further down the line when we move into flu season and schools returning etc. I don't think the public would have the appetite for restrictions until next summer. It's not nice to say but we will probably have to get used to accepting deaths, but as long as those figures are relatively low and hospitalizations low enough for the NHS to handle then we've got to get back on with life. It's understandable for people to panic about high numbers, but the benchmark will eventually shift from number of cases to being how many need hospital treatment. I know there's more to life than football, but can't see how Chester FC survives another year without fans, or restricted numbers, and that's probably reflected across the leisure industry as a whole.

Mask wearing has been a lot more normalised in East Asia for a while now, possibly since the early 2000s Sars outbreak. There's a Japanese band I've seen a few times and one of them always wears a mask because of some condition he used to have, although he admits he now just does it for a gimmick. Personally, I really dislike the environment of mask wearing, but I accept they are making a difference.

To be fair the number of hospitalisations is the highest since March, just over 400 I think so not rocketing but going up steadily. Personally I think I'll carry on wearing a mask in the supermarket and other shops. I'm off to Latitude Festival later this month so I won't be wearing one there, although everyone has to have either proof of double vaccine or negative test. Don't use public transport so no worries there.

Yes perhaps “rocketing” was the wrong term given what people imagine that to mean but they are definitely increasing.
I’ll continue to wear a mask to protect others (including the vulnerable I mentioned earlier in the thread), that’s the whole point. My mask protects you (and I work in a hospital), your mask protects me. I would hope the majority of the population will continue to do so - the snap poll results I posted earlier in the thread seem to suggest that will be the case, despite certain posters above mocking it.
