Can you guys stop with the names, whats the need?
If you want a debate, then engage with people and offer some decent comments, not just 'Boot lickers' 'deluded simpletons' etc No wonder this forum is dead with shit like that constantly.

The government are planning for a lockdown in October should hospitalisations continue at the current alarming rate. Do you know if it will it be a national lockdown again or just confined to particular areas with high cases Frank?

What would you call someone who votes against their own economic self-interests to protect the wealth of the already super-rich? We have a real problem with a serf mentality in this country and these people need calling out. Sorry if it offends your delicate disposition.

Took the words out of my fingers - was literally about to ask the same question. If that isn’t boot-licking I don’t know what is. The problem is that ideally we want these "boot-lickers" to change, and you don't change people's behaviour by insulting them.
You can see that in the way the right have failed in their attempts to humiliate young left-leaning people by calling them "snowflakes". They've turned it back on them and made it apparent that they aren't the ones who get hysterical when asked to confront their own privileges and prejudices. The left's ownership of that term has been a big success I think.
There was a good video on the BBC website a while ago where two people who had given very different speeches after the bringing down of the Edward Colston statue - a black poet and a white tradesman - met up in a bar. They seemed to get on, and the white guy admitted he had largely misunderstood what the protest was all about. He wasn't a racist - he was just a bit confused and frightened, and perhaps not getting through to people like him is also a failure on behalf of the protesters.
I'd like to see more done to get completely different people to go to the pub together - a staunch Brexiteer, a feminist, a Muslim, a wealthy businessman, an Oxford graduate, an ex-convict and a wheelchair user. Get them to sit down together, explain their fears and concerns, and listen to each other. They might find they're not that different after all. That's how you change people's minds, and it's a very gradual process.

But whats the point in even trying to come here to debate things when those kind of things get thrown around. It would be far better if, like Lobster mentioned, people try and bring others to their way of thinking.

Depressingly predictable that the dreadful Priti Patel has given the tabloids something nasty to write about migrants instead of her party's deeply unfair tax hikes.
Also the Daily Mail continues to defy parody. A front page decrying headline about Patel sending migrants back to France, directly alongside a picture lauding "history maker" Emma Raducanu - a Canadian born immigrant with Chinese and Romanian parents.

Lol wouldn’t be the first time that fascist rag has looked stupid - remember their article slagging off Chris Morris’ brilliant “Paedogeddon” Brass Eye episode juxtaposed next to a picture of 15-year old Charlotte Church in a tight top under the headline “Chest Swell”. I can only imagine the blame storming sessions at Tory HQ following the damming Select Committee report into the Government’s handling of the pandemic. As they labelled it “one of UK’s worst ever public health failures’ I expect key figures to do the honourable thing and resign immediately. However, as the last eleven years has shown, there is no honour among Tories and it doesn’t matter how much blood is on their hands, they will never do the decent thing.

The early response to the pandemic was an unforgivable disgrace and I think we're still paying for it now. I don't buy the whole "learn from our mistakes", "hindsight is a wonderful thing" excuse. What we did was in direct opposition to what most of Europe was doing, including our nearest neighbours Ireland. I give Chris Whitty and co. the benefit of the doubt as I think in time it will come out how much toeing of the line they've had to do, but the government are just lucky they have been partially bailed out by the amazing work and vaccine programme of the NHS, who I still suspect they want to destroy.

On a non-political note, I reckon at least 80% of people on the train I get are now not wearing masks. The operators need to insist on it I think, as public transport has always been a germfest even at the best of times.
On the other hand, someone I work with said he went to the opticians where mask-wearing was mandatory. I'm not sure of the wisdom of that when masks force your breath up towards your eyes, hence people are trying on glasses that have breath vapour all over them.

Think in a medical/healthcare environment I take it as a given to be wearing masks, but I definitely agree on the public transport issue - the very definition of a confined space with strangers.

Just read that Matt Hancock has been given a role with the UN focusing on Covid in Africa. They have things tough enough in that continent don't they? The UN have got to be on a massive WUM at this point. Just 4.4% of people in the entire continent of Africa have been fully vaccinated. HanCOCK was the Health Secretary in a government that has consistently blocked attempts to increase vaccine supplies to poor countries in order to protect pharmaceutical profits. It’s an insult. Remember about 25 pages ago when I was arguing that nobody is safe from the virus until everyone is safe and that it’s a world health problem and we should be ensuring as much of the entire world is vaccinated as possible whilst international travel was still happening and our borders have pretty much remained open? Well 19 months later we’re still in the pandemic. Says it all. Our border is now firmly closed for trade of goods but has always remained wide open for transmission of a killer virus.

Hancock is a criminal as far as I'm concerned. Being from Chester, I would hope that if he were ever to try and leech onto any future successes the club had like promotion, giantkillings or even a cup final (hey, we can dream), we would tell him he's not welcome.

Good to see the UN have rescinded the offer to him. An entirely inappropriate, preposterous choice to work on Africa’s recovery from the Covid pandemic considering his involvement in blocking moves to make vaccines available to millions of people in poor and developing countries (thus prolonging the pandemic).

Odd really. Hancock, who seems like that kid at school who was always coming up with bullshit reasons for not doing his homework and never convincing anyone, is trying to make out that it's down to a technicality, but it seems more likely that the UN didn't do their homework on him and have had second thoughts, which is poor on their part.

Covid cases yesterday:
France: 1,120 Spain: 1,277 Italy: 1,561 Germany: 4,872
UK: 40,224
We are now the epicentre of the pandemic and the Tories appear to have given up. Absolutely shaming dereliction of the duty of Government to protect the people. Why nobody in the media is holding them to account is frightening, you can bet your bottom dollar if this was a Corbyn led administration the outrage would be deafening.

The figures don't look great, but would you rather live with restrictions indefinitely and have low number of infections, or no restrictions and a higher number? The vaccines have reduced the number of deaths and hospitalisations, and for the majority of double jabbed people who get covid they feel a bit shitty for a few days and then they are alright. I know full well there are those that will suffer long covid etc, but there's plenty of virus's that have nasty side effects that can stick with you for a while and we've not placed restrictions in our lives previously to combat that. I know a fair few people that have had it recently, recovered and are fine now, whereas pre vaccine I knew plenty that were on ventilators or passing away because of it - what we have now is trying to get on with our lives again whilst living with the threat of covid. Since restrictions ended I play weekly indoor sport, go to the Chester matches, been allowed into the office more frequently, and been to gigs......I've no doubt I'll probably get it at some point but I'd rather risk that than not be able to do any of the things I've just listed. It's all a balancing act, and I think it's easy to look at the stats of how many have it and feel alarmed, but rather than scrutinise that I think it should really be judged on NHS pressure and deaths because unless lockdowns and restrictions are re-imposed I can't see high numbers of cases coming down any time soon, especially heading into winter months.
That being said, I think it was unwise to give so much freedom to people about whether to wear a mask. I don't consider it a hardship to pop a mask on if I go into ASDA or get the train, it had become normal, but going into shops these days I'm the odd one out for wearing them. I agree with lifting the majority of restrictions but I think people could have lived with having to put a mask on in certain situations for a bit longer. I'm dubious about whether people sanitise as much either, but even if Covid had ended I think I'd still be carrying on with that as it's made me think how minging some places are and how germs are easily spread.

Post by Lobster on Oct 18, 2021 13:04:50 GMT
I think the measures now are about right, although I agree that stricter and clearer advice on masks would be welcome.
The continuing high figures are a knock-on of our government's criminally awful handling at the start of the pandemic. The death rate is a lot lower than the number of positive cases, which suggests the vaccine is going well. They're just lucky we have the best healthcare system in the world.
