Just looking at these and feeling every bit of my 75 years, never heard of any of them, always been a country and Western fan can't beat 3 deaths per verse. To be fair I don't think many people will have heard of mine, except maybe Fiona Apple and the Deftones. It's mostly post-punk, which is my thing.
I'm half your age and I'd be equally clueless about mainstream chart music.
Must admit I'm with upsanddowns on this one definatley haven't heard of any of them I'm more into 50s 60s and 70s and Country and Western and I don't listen to the modern day music its just not my thing. When I have the radio on its Gold radio which only plays music from my era

The reality is you're probably just not listening to the right stuff. Signing up for Apple Music or Spotify is well worth a tenner a month, even if it is crippling the music industry. "Teamwork" by The Futurebirds is a country album I'd recommend from last year.

Working Men’s Club is album of the year for me. Yes, good album. Took a few listens for me to really appreciate it. Has a very mid-80s Factory Records feel to it, which is no bad thing. First time I heard the single ‘Valleys’ I thought it was A Certain Ratio.

Sad news about MF DOOM that came out on new years eve too. Mm...Food and Madvillainy were big albums in my late teens and you only have to look at the range of artists paying tribute to see how influential he was across genres. Forty nine is no age.

Going to go say "The Blossoms" album. Maybe not just for the album itself but also for the documentary on "Amazon Prime" in which they come across as five decent and likeable lads who've achieved their dream and are proud of their home town (Stockport) and their roots. Last time I saw Edgley Park bouncing like that was when Chester FC came to town.

Set an aim to actually listen to new music this year - “new” to me is stuff like George Ezra’s Shotgun (2018) and Dance Monkey by Tones And I (2019) and that’s only because my kids like them. I live in a Heart 80s/Heart Dance/Spotify (80s, dance/house, Queen and Beautiful South) bubble to be honest.
Sounds like aforementioned Working Men’s Club might the bill in terms of what I normally like so will give them a listen.

I couldn't even name a song by him. Even though I'm immersed in music and must have listened to about 500 albums last year, I have no idea about what's "big" at the moment.

Yes I only know Shotgun because the kids like it, and I agree the sound of his voice is mind-numbing.
Absolutely love all the Beautiful South incarnations.
I gave the aforementioned Working Men’s Club album a listen in the hope that I’d actually enjoy some form of new music - mightily impressed with their sound.

If '80s vibes are your thing, listen to the Belarusian band Molchat Doma and their latest album Monument. It's like something from Soviet Russia that's only just seen the light of day now. Apparently they've got quite a fan base now after featuring on a TikTok.

A guilty pleasure is the recent Fatboy Slim remix of Acredita No Véio (Listen To The Old Man) by Pele & Rodrigo y Gabriela. Intro is immense.

There’s more than a nod to Joy Division but they have their own thing going on and some of their videos on YouTube have had 17million views. Becoming a Belarusian rap enthusiast is something Half Man Half Biscuit would sing about.

Some info about it here: pitchfork.com/thepitch/how-belarusian-post-punks-molchat-doma-became-a-tiktok-meme/Not sure the kids who are fascinated by them really appreciate the message. Pretty dark and daring in parts, especially in a country where it's dangerous to ask questions.

It's a bit of a sad thought in January but I'm not sure I'll hear a better album all year that Drunk Tank Pink by Shame. Great to see them and Sleaford Mods in the top 10 albums this week. The new Viagra Boys album is worth a listen as well.

Mogwai having the number one album in the official chart last week was unexpected. It's a great album and well deserved for a band that has remained steadfastly independent for 25 years.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor have also announced a new album to be released next month - high times if this type of music is your thing.
These two bands are up there with the best live acts I've ever seen but you wouldn't describe either as prolific, so I'm all over anything new they release.

Stumbled across this by chance even though i vaguely remember it. My astonishment over the hair on the lead singer was only matched by the fact this has had nearly 80 million views.

I've never managed to get any more than a passing appreciation for Mogwai, but good to see them get the number one album for the reasons you mention. Saw Godspeed a few years back and agree that they're a fantastic live act
