The Lightening Seeds - 3 Lions

The Lightening Seeds - 3 Lions Two of the three lines of punditry from the opening to the seminal football song ‘Three Lions’, spoken by Alan Hansen (“it’s bad news for the English game”) and Jimmy Hill (“we’ll go on getting bad results”) weren’t actually from an England international but rather from the post match analysis of Nottingham Forest’s 5-1 hammering by Bayern Munich in the UEFA Cup in 1996. It was in response to a season where all English teams were dumped out of Europe in some fashion: Manchester United - 1st round of UEFA Cup on away goals to Rotor Volgograd Liverpool - 2nd round of UEFA Cup 1-0 on aggregate to Brondby Leeds - 2nd Round of UEFA Cup 8-3 on aggregate to PSV Nottingham Forest - Quarter Finals of UEFA Cup 7-2 on aggregate to Bayern Blackburn - Bottom of their Champions League group Everton - 2nd round of Cup Winners Cup 1-0 on aggregate to Feyenoord Sheffield Wednesday - Group stage of Intertoto Cup finishing 2nd in group Tottenham - Group stage of Intertoto Cup, finishing 4th and included and 8-0 hiding by Koln Wimbledon - Group stage of Intertoto Cup, finishing 4th without winning a game Spurs and Wimbledon were banned from Europe after this for playing weakened sides. Mental that Nottingham Forest were our best performers on the continent that season.

Mental that Nottingham Forest were our best performers on the continent that season. I remember that season, and that Forest game specifically. Steve Stone scored their consolation if I remember rightly. Possibly a hangover from the European ban, but English clubs enjoyed little success in Europe in the 90s really, and went out to some nobodies as that list shows. I remember the season after they won the Premier League, Blackburn went out to a Swedish team called Trelleborg who it was said were part-timers. Back then it seemed more like you were expected to support English clubs playing in Europe in the same way as you'd support England. Don't think that's really there anymore.

Not a very inspiring Mercury Music Prize shortlist this year - pitchfork.com/news/mercury-prize-2021-shortlist-floating-points-and-pharoah-sanders-mogwai-more/Mogwai probably deserve it out of them for their longevity. Black Country, New Roads seem like a band I should like but can't really get into. Sault intrigues me, last I heard that was an anonymous project so not sure how they would accept the prize. I'd have nominated their Black Is album ahead of that one but I'm not really big on either. I thought Squid would be a shoe-in for at least a nomination. Great albums overlooked by Shame, Dry Cleaning and TV Priest as well. Then again I've heard you have to pay to be nominated, which isn't a great deal for artists when a) they can't tour at the moment and b) they need a song to be streamed over 400 times on Spotify to make a pound.

Ages since I went to a festival, even pre-Covid.

British Sea Power have renamed as Sea Power.
“In recent times there’s been a rise in a certain kind of nationalism in this world – an isolationist, antagonistic nationalism that we don’t want to run any risk of being confused with.
“We’ve always been internationalist in our mindset, something made clear in songs like Waving Flags, an anthem to pan-European idealism.
“We always wanted to be an internationalist band but maybe having a specific nation-state in our name wasn’t the cleverest way to demonstrate that.”

Always thought there was a certain crowd that seemed to misunderstand the message of many of their songs, particularly Waving Flags.

Nirvana sued by Nevermind baby - www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-58327844Surprising and strange really as he's always embraced it in the past. No doubt some shithouse of a lawyer has got into his ear. Accusing them of creating child pornography is pretty low though.

They admit they never thought too hard about their name and have apologised for choosing a "misgendered" name. This even seems to have riled a lot of experimental music fans, who by their nature tend to be pretty open minded.

Currently listening to the new debut album from the brilliant Yard Act. Too many great lyrics to mention, one of which I've pinched for my signature. Possibly the successors to The Fall now that Mark E Smith is no longer with us, and better than anything they released in their latter years. The singer's former band Post War Glamour Girls never got the attention they deserved either.
On another note, sad to hear about Meat Loaf. Not really a fan of his music but a great performer and personality. One of the best arguments against snobs who discredit singers who don't write their own songs, as he barely wrote a note.

The new Muse song is hopefully a very welcome return to a much more heavy sound than we've had of late. I saw last night the Rock show on BBCR1 has now become the Rock and Indie show which is just depressing from a national broadcaster once a beacon of light in the mud of pop chart music.

If '80s vibes are your thing, listen to the Belarusian band Molchat Doma and their latest album Monument. It's like something from Soviet Russia that's only just seen the light of day now. Apparently they've got quite a fan base now after featuring on a TikTok. Just had a listen to them and must say I’m impressed. There’s more than a nod to Joy Division but they have their own thing going on and some of their videos on YouTube have had 17million views. Becoming a Belarusian rap enthusiast is something Half Man Half Biscuit would sing about. An update on Molchat Doma who went down quite well on this thread. Since the Ukraine invasion started, they've changed their logo to the Ukraine flag colours, released anti-war statements in Russian and English, and pledged to donate a portion of the profits from their tour to Ukrainian aid. They're from Belarus, where people who oppose the government end up going into hiding. Fair play, they've got some balls!

First few listens to Arcade Fires new album WE is very positive for me.
After a hit and miss filled last album Everything Now, this new stuff sounds great and a bit of a throwback to Reflektor/The Suburbs and Funeral.

After a hit and miss filled last album Everything Now, this new stuff sounds great and a bit of a throwback to Reflektor/The Suburbs and Funeral. Haven't listened to it yet, will have to do so. My favourite album of this year so far is still probably Yard Act as mentioned earlier. Also really enjoying the third Fontaines album Skinty Fia - struggling to think of any band whose first three albums have been as good as theirs. I see Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever have dropped a new album today. I really liked their last one so will have to check it out.

I was at a wedding tonight where there was a band playing songs like 'Teenage Dirtbag' by Wheatus, 'Buck Rodgers' by Feeder and 'Learn to Fly' by Foo Fighters.
I'm not necessarily saying any of these are my favourite songs, but what's interesting is that they're songs that are 20-25 years old that people still recognise and enjoy today. I wonder which songs of today will be popular in 20 years time.
This is not a "music is shit these days" rant because I don't believe that. There are artists around now who speak as loudly to me as anything I've ever heard, but none of this seems to creep into mainstream consciousness. The charts and airplay seem to be dominated by the same handful of artists - Ed Sheeran, Drake, Dua Lipa, Harry Styles etc - and their music to me seems very bland and forgettable. There seems to be no variety and absolutely no room for anything you'd call a "band" to release a hit song.

If there’s one act whose reach can extend across the generations, then it’s South London septuagenarian drill artists Pete and Bas. Their rhyming, cadence and flow (particularly Bas) is truly astonishing.

The new OFF! album Free LSD is great if you're in to that sort of thing. Keith Morris is really back on form, I hope I have half his energy when I reach his age

I'm a bit behind on this news but I've learned that Mimi Parker from the band Low has died of ovarian cancer this month, aged just 55.
Not a widely known band but they wrote some of the most moving and brutally sad music I've ever heard.

What's everyone listening to? Myself, I think Fontaines D.C. have probably just released the album of the year, for the second year in a row! Fontaines D.C. are the most exciting Indie band around at the moment. I saw them last year in Bournemouth and this year in Glastonbury. Such a vibrant energy and great sound.
