To call someone "the Indian" rather than take the time to learn and use their name is, to say the least, highly disrespectful. Does that philosophy extend to calling someone from Scotland a Scot, or Jock, from Wales a Taffy, or Ireland a Paddy. How about an Aussie? I appreciate it is, or should be, the intention that matters. It depends on the context. His tweet mentioned Joe Biden by name but referred to her as "the Indian", so that demeans her and uses her ethnicity as a distinguishing factor. And yes, in that context, I wouldn't like to be called "the Englishman", "the Northerner", "the plastic Scouser" or whatever. People have names, use them.

How is this thread still not moved to off topic or better yet deleted or locked? Mods are even encouraging some of this political debate which has nothing to do with our club! Why are you still here if it bothers you that much?

Why are you still here if it bothers you that much? Whats the point in having forum rules if you don't enforce them? Not sure what the problem is. This forum is primarily about Chester but also other football chat. This is a big story in the footballing world this weekend and one of those circumstances where sport and politics are linked. There is no derailing of a thread here, its a thread about an incident at a football ground that involves politics - if that's not for you then that's fine but its not the same as a match day thread getting hijacked by politics.

Fair enough, but what I meant was that politics should be kept off here where there is no relevance to a footballing thread. It was to address issues a few weeks ago of general footballing topics being hijacked by Tory vs Labour shite. This is one of those rare occasions where football and politics do link so its fine to stay here. I will try and write the rule a bit clearer though.

I fully understand how the Millwall game is debated on a here but fail to see how an american calling somebody an Indian fits In to it. Surely it then becomes political. For what it's worth I don't believe any one should kneel before anyone regardless of race or any thing else. Personally I will never use titles such as sir, lord or whatever it got me in a lot of trouble at school but I would call the teacher Mr or Mrs etc. Make life much easier when we don't differentiate.

Only on Devachat can a discussion about Booing taking a knee decent into petty arguments. It seems like every thread gets hijacked and turned into a slagging match, and it's nearly always the same few posters who are the ones ruining it. It is very rare on here for a thread to stay on topic for more than a page

First of all, it's not an American i was talking about, its a British/Northern Irish member of the House of Lords who made the remark. Secondly, I mentioned it (along with several other points) to highlight that BLM extends beyond sport and is about perceived injustice towards minority groups across various aspects of authority. If we think the knee gesture just means don't be racist during a football match, we're missing the point.

Who said I was talking about you Frank? But since you've bitten, I will draw your attention to your post around 16 hours ago, where you attempted to fish a moderator about being right wing. If that's not trying to hijack a thread that you started by being unnecessarily political then I don't know what is...

Why don't you block me if its so tedious? You occasionally post some interesting views, which often challenge my own. So, I choose not to block you. But you let yourself down with the childish, narcissistic back and forth stuff with Frank. You are equally to blame.

The football authorities are being disingenuous in claiming that taking the knee is 'anti-discriminatory' rather than support for the ideology of Black Lives Matter. The salute is inextricably linked to BLM. When it was introduced they made it very clear that it was a gesture of support for that organisation, even to the extent of putting the BLM logo on the player's shirts.
BLM is a very problematic political organisation. Its very name, coupled with its angry rejection of equivalent slogans such as All Lives Matter and White Lives Matter (and of course the notorious tweet 'White Lives Don't Matter'), is divisive and discriminatory, and its underlying ideology, which states that all white people are inevitably and without exception racist and thus to be denied a voice in debate concerning ethnicity, is plain and simply racist.
It is very possible that the football authorities have come to realise this and are trying to water down their original commitment to a more general 'anti-discrimination' message, but the genie is out of the bottle, as the comments of Dion Dublin and the Black Power salutes seen on the pitch indicate. Football has got itself into a minefield and the sooner it extricates itself and gets back to more solid ground the better.

How long does sport carry on taking a knee, 1 year, 5 years, 10 years or until it becomes second nature and people actually forget what the gesture means? How about until ethnic minorities are treated equally? Seems fair to me. What's your experience of this? How do you define what is unfair? What's wrong with the protection laws in the UK re: minorities? You seem to get easily offended about something which probably doesn't affect you much and also you probably know very little about.
