Kelan Swales who's been on trial for us has signed for Alfreton. They've also signed three others today - Anthony Dwyer from Basford, Billy Fewster from N Forest and Jaz Goundry from Grimsby. Wonder if it turns out to be the one that got away or the lucky escape. Time will tell on that one.

Watched him play 1st half at Bala. Something there but not sure what he would have added to our squad with Goodson and Burton signing. I think a physical CM would be a better fit for us.

Not sure what the situation with Roberts is but that means Earl should be next in, but his performance in the play-off game worried me and he's looked off the pace in friendlies so far as well. It's meant Burke and Whitehouse have had to cover and shift around. I'm not sure what the best option is there without Kev.

Is the young lad Bott a holding player?
Daly seems more of a Devine/Lynch generic centre mid.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Burke starting in that deep midfield role tomorrow. Earl was poor in the playoff game, and as above was poor in the friendly I saw him play a half of. For all of his height his physicality does not appear to be one of his strong points. Time to develop yet as he is only 21.

King's Lynn reportedly agreed this week to cancel defender Olly Scotts contract after the player stated that - "he wanted to play for a club closer to his roots in the north-east". He has now been reunited with former manager Tommy Widdrington after signing for - Aldershot. A (presumably straight faced) Widderington declared that, “I was interested in Olly earlier in the window but saw an official approach rebuffed and moved on, after my surprise at learning Olly was available after cancelling his contract, I invited him in to train and subsequently to join the group." He becomes the third former Lynn player to jump ship and sign for Aldershot.

Warrington lose one of their 'key' players as Macclesfield sign winger Luke Duffy for an undisclosed fee. Macclesfield confirmed that they paid a club record fee to sign Duffy. Warrington released a statement in which they stated that, - 'The club was approached with an initial offer last weekend, which it turned down, and had no intention or reason to sell a key member of the first team squad. However, despite efforts to persuade him to stay, the player made it clear that he wished to leave the club to take up a more lucrative offer with the Northern Premier League club.'

Southport - Will he, won't he? As well as managing Southport, Liam Watson is one of that clubs three directors. Their season so far, Southport 0-4 Warrington, Alfreton 3-1 Southport and tonight, Spennymoor 5-1 Southport - making it now 11 defeats on the bounce.

I’m not someone who enjoys seeing managers lose their jobs, but Watson surely would’ve gone years ago were it not for his seat on the board. Southport aren’t a bad side - they’ve had some great players in recent times, but have consistently underachieved on a decent budget and the football has largely been awful to boot. He still seems to have a decent eye for a player, and I actually think they’ve recruited quite well this summer, so if he really is un-sackable then surely a DoF role would suit him better. I’ve got Armstrong down as the first manager to be sacked this season. Darlo really needed a good start to lift spirits after last season’s total capitulation, but neither their transfer business nor early results have given much cause for optimism. Seeing them seemingly hit their ceiling as a mid-table side at this level, as well as Scarborough’s frustratingly slow progress up the divisions in their first decade as a reformed club, makes me realise just how fortunate we were that the Deva didn’t fall into the wrong hands in 2010.

Strange thing is Southport seem to have a period each season where they go on a run and win loads of games, then revert to type and look really poor. If you play them during that good period, they're a difficult opponent. Not great to watch at any time though.

Armstrong seems eerily similar to McCarthy six years ago here. Should probably have been sacked in the summer, has publicly moaned the budget about even though the fans have put their hands in their pockets towards it, and they seem to be carrying their poor form into the new season. Southport always seem a bit chaotic to me. Either in great form or terrible. Makes me think they're not a great club to play for and morale is a big factor.
