3-1 now... Too many games in a short space of time.. And not good for morale to play a bogey team like Alty is it. Not good.

Hmmm, it's only a pre-season friendly. However, not great to see us getting beaten by a team 2 leagues below us, with most of our first team out there.

Why are we playing first team every game? Asking for injuries

According to Dave Powell, Hannah 'hoping' to play some part in Port Vale match a week on Saturday, but it doesn't sound like he'll be fit for the opening game to me and that probably goes for Mahon too.

Disappointing to lose to a team who are 2 leagues below us, but these games are about staying fit and increasing momentum. Oh well, it's only pre-season, but we shouldn't forget the same team have only lost 1 friendly out of 5 in the space of 8 days. We should be quite happy with that. I've overheard someone and 'Trialist A', the goalie is called Sam Ramsbottom. Hope we play a bit better away at Witton on Thursday, COYB.

A couple of things from tonight's game and generally as we approach the season:
Alty set up with what looked like three at the back, kept possession for fun. Didn't do a lot with it, sideways mostly, but did look dangerous in wide areas. Always tricky to gauge with friendlies, as you don't know who's fit, who's giving 100% as the games are meaningless etc.
I do think we need wingers, quite badly. Davies has a decent left foot on him, no question, another good goal tonight - but don't think I've ever seen him beat someone for pace. Mahon played 45 yesterday so I'm guessing it's a safety first approach getting him back to full fitness, Chappell cannot be relied upon for me, not sure whether it's application or talent but the lad just falls short for me. Waters looks much improved but not sure he's there yet in terms of being good enough to start every week.
Would also like to see us playing a different formation. A rigid, narrow 442 in all of the games so far I believe? Surely it's best to try out something different in these games than wait and try something untested in a league game?

I'm actually quite angry about that. Literally the only positives were a nice goal from Davies and players getting more minutes under their belts. I expect to see at least some sort of shape or game plan, or at least us to control the game a bit more given that we are 2 leagues above them. I get that we aren't giving it full pelt but we have been given a footballing lesson tonight and chased shadows for 90 mins. What concerned me was the amount of aimless punts from our defenders, whereas Alty actually played from the back and shifted it around nicely. It was just like last season, twatting it to the strikers bypassing the midfield, losing the header and the subsequent second ball. Chappells attitude absolutely stunk I'm afraid, clearly didn't want to be out there with the kids and trialists and gave the ball away countless times. The pitch was immaculate, yet all we did was lump it in the air. Honestly, it was utter shite and looked a continuation from last season but with different players. I don't really care about losing a friendly, but we were truly appalling and made Atly look like Barcelona so I have to say that left me feeling more concerned going forwards. We have some betters players, but the tactics look no different....

Got a good team here now, but the managerial side is inept. Been proven..

I am concerned about this season don't get me wrong whilst I am glad Hannah is back should the club of given a 31 year old a 2 year contract that money could of gone on a defense now horwood has gone we are weakened macca has till the end of September I don't think he will hack it unless he can bring in 2 defenders

I had similar thoughts after the Hyde game, as they played much better football.
What is it with the hoofball? Is it a genuine tactic or a lack of options for the man on the ball?
A lot of positivity has been generated over the summer, but that will disappear rapidly if we are watching the ball being hoofed towards Hannah's head. If we can't play against teams two divisions below, what chance do we have?

Has he actually learned any lessons? The excuses have been removed and if we start off badly he has to go. Hopefully Maguire knows this. People have been celebrating wildly and banging the drum all off season but not a ball had been kicked. There have even been people sloping up to JM on Twitter, apologising for comments made last season. The man's done nothing yet to prove he can turn this round. All he's done is sign a bunch of better players, which only increases the pressure on himself. He can't wheel out the excuses he was last season. It's only a friendly, but very worrying. We haven't even played anyone half decent yet!

Agree with Si here. Our first (half) team hardly put two passes together. We deserved to be at least two down. Peers scored one, and maybe should have had two more. Without actually playing that well.
We've played the same back four, with the exception of the odd injury, in each game. It's looks as if we will keep the back four intact during games. No overlapping fullbacks etc. They stay as a unit.
The midfield looks really slow, and can't keep the ball. The two wide players tuck in to leave us all standing close together. It may help us be compact, but it's useless when we get the ball, as there's no out ball. James has looked ok. Davies has scores good goals but doesn't look a wide left player. Turnbull should be good, but (for me) looks slow and doesn't move much. There's no pace in that midfield at all. No one tries to get forward and help the strikers. They just keep their shape. A fit Mahon would make a difference. Am I the only one who thinks we improve 2nd half with the kids on in some games.
I thought White might be a good signing, but he looked to be struggling to run last night. Even their centre halves looked quicker than our strikers. The service to them is non existent to be fair though. Why doesn't Akintunde run the channel and we can play him in? He either doesn't run until to late or he gets it with the centre half all over him.
Another concern is we've been the same in every friendly I've seen so far. No variation in tactics or formation, or even personnel really. Except rotating the strikers and (not so) wide midfield.
The scoreline last night should have been more like 4-0 or 4-1, not 3-2. It was similar to Nantwich last season, only worse.
If you were JMc what positives would you take out of last night?

A lot of positivity has been generated over the summer, but that will disappear rapidly if we are watching the ball being hoofed towards Hannah's head. If we can't play against teams two divisions below, what chance do we have? It really puzzled me that we were so intent on lumping it forwards. That was a lawn of a pitch against a side two divisions below up, surely the likes of James and Turnbull are capable of coming to take the ball off the defence and retain possession but all that was happening was the defenders taking one touch and immediately putting their foot through it rather than looking for a midfield option. The only time this wasn't the case is when Astles tried to be clever and got mugged by Peers. The amount of times in that first half that Halls took one touch and thumped it up to White and Akintunde was embarrassing, especially as it was so quick that the strikers barely had time to try and get a running jump on their defence. I'm not even against long ball football but there is a way of doing it and you need the correct personnel too, and you sense that someone like Bell has the power and pace to maybe be more effective at it, but there's a massive difference between long ball and aimless punts and unfortunately last night was the latter. White looks like the sort of guy who could possible run the channels or thrive off crosses into the box, not battling with 6'5 monsters. And Akintunde cannot head a ball and absolutely needs the ball to feet, it doesn't take a footballing genius to understand that. I really didn't want to be overly negative after a friendly, but I am genuinely concerned after last night as I expected us to be shaping up much better than that.

I really didn't want to be overly negative after a friendly, but I am genuinely concerned after last night as I expected us to be shaping up much better than that. Worse that Halls was the culprit of long balls as he has been our standout pre-season so far. It was a tired, lackluster performance. Am i the only one worried about the players fitness at this stage? Okay we have three weeks until the new season, and it's about getting minutes, but when people look shattered 10 minutes in it's a bit worrying. We played last night, but the maximum play time has been 45 minutes so surely theres no real excuse for that much fatigue playing two halfs in two days? I just don't buy that. I'm personally glad of the 4-4-2, its simple and JMc should have learned from the second half of last season, not to try over complicating things. Hannah and Mahon are concerns, more so Mahon who just never seems fit any more. We're desperate for a winger with a bit of something about him for me, one that isn't afraid to take on a man and offers a spark. Mahon can be that man, but how often? I'd like to see us dip into the loan market for a young fearless winger. Astles should also forget trying to be smart, and stick to what he's good at, getting the ball clear. He looks laboured and overweight for me, i hope these sports therapists etc are looking into diet.

Only just seen this result and the comments. A bit depressing. I went to Bala and the first half team (probable starting XI) were second best for most of the half. Mahon hardly got a kick. It was only in the second half when the youth, fringe and trialists played that we improved. Comments from Barrow and Macclesfield players on other forums about the players we've signed from them cannot be dismissed as sour grapes. James and Turnbull didn't impress me at Bala. I hope that Mahon and Hannah are not going to miss large chunks because of injury, especially with both players being on 2-year contracts.

Not really the type to post on here, more of a viewer but after last night I felt the need to vent my frustration.
We really were terrible to watch, there was no pattern to our play, no controlled passing to feet, no one running off the ball and certainly no attacking threat. Lynch's goal kicks were aimless and often quite wild and rash, too many times did our full back win the ball and then pump a 50 yard punt straight out of play. The game just seemed to pass our midfield by, Turnbull and James just didn't see the ball when really they should be dominating. It was almost like our only tactic was as soon as you win the ball lets see how quickly we can kick it out of play or give it back to Alty. From my view point I didn't see any attacking movement, felt sorry for White and Akintunde who just didn't get any service into them.
On the other hand, I thought Altrincham looked a decent outfit. Their formation caused us problems, 352, as our wingers were so narrow when defending so they kept their full backs as wide as they could go and were always an option. James Poole up top for them looked good, he dropped into areas between the defence and midfield and again made himself available for an easy pass. First half especially it looked like they had an extra man and so much time on the ball, which was a combination of Alty having good movement and us not pressing high enough. Thought overall Alty moved the ball very well but lacked something in the final third, otherwise they could have scored 3-4 first half.
I sat in the stand behind the dugouts and the Alty manager was shouting all the right things, "don't have too many touches, "keep the ball moving" etc I didn't once see our management team offer any encouragement or advice

I sat in the stand behind the dugouts and the Alty manager was shouting all the right things, "don't have too many touches, "keep the ball moving" etc I didn't once see our management team offer any encouragement or advice I remember seeing a quote from the Alty manager a few weeks back saying he is very demanding of his players and that they play in a certain way, and if it doesn't work then wanted the fans to have a go at him rather than the players who are just trying to carry out his instructions. I could certainly see the philosophy that he's trying to instill in them, and ok they perhaps overplayed at times and maybe you wouldn't be afforded that sort of time on the ball in a league game but it worried me how much more comfortable they looked on the ball than us. Too often our second touch was a tackle. And that philosophy has been instilled by a manager who has only been there a few weeks, but you could see what they were trying to do, whereas we've had our manager for a good amount of time now and for the life of me I couldn't see what our game plan or philosophy was. Waters and Davies were so narrow in that first half so perhaps its no wonder Halls thumped it up as neither of them were coming short for the ball. I was hoping that the submissive style of play from the second half of last season would have gone now we've signed better ball players, but it was a continuation of the allowance of other teams to control possession and its awful to watch. It reminded me of the Macclesfield game last season when they just knocked the ball around us for fun and we stood off and allowed it. And that to me does come from the manager - we should have had the swagger and confidence against a lower side to go there and get on the ball last night but once again we looked submissive.

Therein could lie a problem if we don't get off to a decent start, remember how quickly the general atmosphere turned negative with poor performances coupled with poor results last season. Then we could rapidly end up in a "vicious circle" scenario with predictable consequences. Wasn't there last night but when people whose opinions I respect voice concerns on here then I, for one, am just a tiny bit fearful for the new season despite initially feeling positive re. signings etc. That said, let's not lose sight of the fact that these are pre-season friendlies On paper, and in my opinion, we look a half-decent team but it counts for nothing if the "management" of the team is suspect but, staying positive, let's see how we get on in the next few days and weeks. I'll be there on Saturday to see for myself but even then I won't be rushing to judgement on the basis of one or two games

Two major concerns for me - firstly, Ross Hannah has hardly played a game for well over a year which could explain his muscle injuries this summer already. At 31, on a two-year contract, we need him to build up as much match practice as possible before the season commences. I sincerely hope that this second coming bucks the trend as the football saying goes "never go back".
Secondly, we simply do not have a defence. At least another left back and centre back with pace are required to complete our squad. Halls, Astles and McCombe have played half of every game so far this summer - the two centre backs are going to be goosed by August.
Edit: I have a third concern - the second half teams have predominantly played much better according to reports all summer. The lineups made from trialists and youth teamers. Doesn't particularly enthuse you when they are outclassing our "best X1"

I think what we have to accept is that we have a rather limited manager.
He tried experimenting last season and got found out, so it's only natural that he has reverted back to type.
We aren't going to play attractive football like Altrincham under McCarthy.
What frustrates me slightly though is that if we are going to play this way, why didn't we recruit to compliment the style of football he wants to play? Harry White isn't small but surely a big target man would be your first port of call.
Kingsley James proved last time he was here he can pick the ball off the defence and be the starting point for attacks. I guess when we signed him I was hopeful it was an indication that we were going to start playing that way a bit more this season.
But it is only pre-season so still plenty of time to work on things.

I think he has recuirted for this style. You look at Hannah, chases lost causes and pressures defenders into mistakes and will always be on the move hoping for a flick on. Bell and White are big lads, would probably fall under the target man category, even Akintunde is about 6ft surely? A target man doesn't necessarily have to be 6ft 5, Wilde was probably no taller than White. It's the wide men for me that cause us the headaches, midfielders we've signed in the centre looked positive on paper, but the wide men looked like budget fillers.

Personally made my views on Chaps quite clear, but i do agree a few bad games and people will be restless at the Deva. In response to Mancot: I do think the centre back pairing being tired by August is a little extreme. Most clubs have their preferred two CB playing every game of the season together unless of suspension/Injury.

I'm relying on the knowledge of those who have been to the friendies and already my optimism is sadly waning. Players considered not good enough for Chester are going elsewhere and flourishing. Tom Peers and Tony Thomson in an Alty team that outplayed us. Was Liam Browhill on their bench too? Evan Horwood in a Bala team that outplayed us. Even our kids and trialists seem to be outplaying the alleged first team. Has McCarthy managed to lower the standards of his so called quality signings so quickly? High hopes pinned on the two year deals penned by Hannah and Mahon and already injury doubts emerging! No mention yet by others, but no play time yet for Tom Shaw. Were we peddled a lie when he was announced as a player/assistant manager? Any player who has the balls to tell McCarthy he was wrong is shipped out if Jonny Hunt and Elliott Durrell are anything to go by. Both gone onto higher things. (League tables don't lie) Out of a little desperation can anyone tell me something positive please?
