Having not been to any friendlies, I was feeling quite optimistic, with season tickets purchased and day in Solihull planned. But then I have read the 2 latest match reports and my heart sank a little. I am now increasingly concerned for next season, given that nothing seems to have really changed and despite good recruitment on paper, Mr. McCarthy continues to demonstrate little tactical ability and no evident idea of how he wants his team to play, even with help of more experienced players. I also saw his latest media uttering’s (before last night’s match) saying that the fans should "lose the negativity" of last season". This was a little odd given the plaudits he has received for what appears to be good recruitment and the club then shifting 1100 odd seas tickets. Jon needs to understand that any lingering feelings of negativity principally relate to him undeservedly remaining in a job at the end of last season. Since then however most fans have been prepared to give him another chance, but given expectations have been raised with seemingly good signings , unless there is a significant and rapid improvement in performances and results, he can only expect severe criticism and pressure for his early removal . Oh well, roll on 5th August.....

Im not sure what's "special" about being outclassed by teams two divisions below If we lose the first two games I dread to think what the atmosphere will be like on the third

What does he think is going to be achieved by coming out with stuff like that? If he has read the forums/media then he's see that his impressive work in the transfer market has generated some enthusiasm which was reflected in the the better than expected/deserved season tickets, and the majority were willing to give him a chance to prove himself with a better squad this year. So he really didn't need to come out ranting about last season again, trying to control opinions like Mark Wright used to do. He needs to develop thicker skin as football is a game of opinions and always will be - we're not mugs and we had to sit through some utter dross last season, but him coming out telling us all to forget about it is only serving to make people remember it and get angry again! Move on Jon, we all had done until you mentioned it again.....

Its early days....let the team gel and work each other out. These games are designed to let the manager see all the players and combinations work (or not).
Id forget Tom Shaw as a player unless the team gets ravaged by injury. He's openly stated he prefers the coaching side so I don't expect to see him playing much at all nor getting on the bench.
On my wish list before things get real are 3 items....
1) A winger. More pace as this team lacks flyers big time. Opposition teams hate pace but we have none. 2) Fitness improvement from Astles and Lynch. Both overweight. They were last season and they still are now. They're footballers...if they want to play at a higher level one day then they need to take better care of themselves. I don't want to hear people saying Astles is naturally a big lad, he would be an even better player if he lost two stone. As for Lynch, the lad beat me to the pub after a home defeat last season. 3) A new keeper to challenge Lynch for the No.1 spot. Good shot stopper but I'm not convinced he should be a No.1 in this league.

With over a 1000 ST sold I would say the only negativity is coming from JM in his perception of the fans.
At this level, football thankfully is still a working class game, and its old ethos was and still is, let your football do the talking. At the moment, the football is talking bollocks and has done since Christmas.
People have coughed up hard earned up front for this team this season, and even more so for the friendlies, does he really expect people to go home happy after seeing another dreadful performance they have forked out for. Get in the real world Jon, or it wont be long before you can take your positivity down the dole office. They will love you there.

I saw JMs remarks in the Bleader before the Alty game. I found them incredible and at best disrespectful. May be Mark Maguire should now step in and help him with these interviews, at least until he has been made to attend a media training Course ! He still seems to want to justify last seasons abysmal showing and comes across as being a little bitter, blaming virtually everyone and everything other than himself for the causes of the "negativity" he perceives. Is he so naïve that he fails to understand that many fans strongly feel that he is very lucky to be in the job ? Most other managers would have been shown the door for last seasons ultimately pathetic performance. Given his attitude and apparent stubbornness this does not bode well, given the need for him to change many critical aspects of his managerial approach to at the very least improve results.

Agree Si Completely counter-productive in my view He's not only planted the seeds of negativity before a ball has been kicked in anger, he's watered and fertilised them so that they will grow quicker!
Just a thought, is Tom Shaw a better performer with media and is he worth a go?

McCarthy seriously needs some PR training.
Rather than blame himself, last season's performances were more related to a handful of fans on a football forum judging by that article.
Did he seriously believe that this would come across well and improve his relationship with fans? He is showing he is incapable of learning from the mistakes he made last season with the media.
I was optimistic after the signings we made and the work done behind the scenes in the off season by Mark Maguire, but articles like this really show how easy it is for that optimism to be taken away. And the worrying thing is, McCarthy thought these sort of comments would be helpful. Precisely the opposite.
Tom Shaw, from the interviews I have seen of him last season, seems much more in tune and I don't think he would disrespect fans of the club, which McCarthy seems to have a habit of doing.

Maguire needs to get hold of McCarthy and insist on some form of media training/passing on duties to Shaw.
I have never known anyone to continually put his foot in it as McCarthy does. He's utterly inept in front of a camera and that interview stinks of him trying to control opinions once again.
Do your job, Jon.

Whilst the second half of last season was awful, we have the opportunity to move on now with some renewed optimism. That has to be the better choice than languishing in the memory of misery surely? It seems to me that it's been tough for some regular posters on this board during this summer, with little or nothing to moan about. When a friendly match goes against us, the gloves are off again. Amazing. Some of the diatribe that was aimed at Macca and Mark McGuire on this board was shameful and adds no value to anything I tend to avoid the pre season games, (may go to one) as they have always seemed pretty meaningless to me and rarely serve as a reliable indicator for the season as a whole.. So success or otherwise will be judged from early August.

I said the other day that it can do you good to lose a couple of friendlies provided you learn from them, and I think what we're learning here is that the manager is still revealing himself to be off the pace in terms of tactics and, more importantly, attitude.
The mood on here has been very positive, and the sale of over 1,000 season tickets is very good for us. He's the one dragging 'negativity' into it and by doing so, he comes across as rather bitter and insecure. I hate to say it, but I'm pretty sure we're just delaying the inevitable here by sticking with him.
It's been good to see some of the positivity on here, and it's been a good summer for the club off the pitch with the website and sponsorship deals. On the pitch though, I fear the optimism is a little misplaced. We've signed some players who guided Macc to midtable, and a striker we know is good but hardly played last season and seems to be struggling with injuries. We've lost our best player from last season and our biggest goal threat, and we have a manager who is still misjudging the mood of the fans and doesn't quite seem to grasp the situation.

I'd prefer to forget about it. Perhaps he got a loaded question from the reporter, but the way to answer it would have been to acknowledge that the fans were short changed from Xmas onwards and we are looking to put it behind us and move forwards. But the way he is quoted makes him sound bitter and out of touch with reality. McGuire must be fuming with that, as JM has pretty much pissed on his chips there. And as for last night, it was abysmal but as Lobster said hopefully we can learn some harsh truths from it which are best learnt now than on August 5th.

It was all down to us and our negativity that held the club back last season, nothing to do with the shite on the pitch! He certainly doesn't do himself any favours does he. First rule of business - don't criticise the customers. It looks as if he is already feeling the pressure, knowing that he has nowhere to hide if we get off to a bad start.

McCarthy is showing all the signs of a man who realizes he is not up to the job so just like David Brent he acts the fool. I thought that it was all positive at your club now with some decent signings and an impressive 1100 season tickets sold plus increased sponsorship ? Problem is he is still the same as last season and is looking for a scapegoat if and when the wheels fall off !

Can't see him changing much now. That would be seen as a knee jerk reaction. Also do we have the players to change it?

I'm going to largely ignore the pre-season results and the way we have been playing in those games. Plenty of teams have "bad" pre-seasons and it doesn't mean a thing once the real competition starts.
However, on the issue of McCarthy, he needs to give his head a wobble and let a few cogs turn in his head before he opens his mouth. What on Earth was he thinking giving that interview? I would be absolutely fuming if I was Mark Maguire or one of the players - he's just taken a good portion of the goodwill which he and everyone else at the football club has worked so hard to achieve in the off-season and took a steaming shite on it for no purpose whatsoever.
Why does he think he has the right to dictate behaviour to fans and more importantly, owners, of this football club? He does not have a monopoly on public opinion and would be well served to remember that. Fans and owners are perfectly entitled to think the team are playing awful football or that he is a shite manager and are equally as entitled to voice those opinions as vocally and as often as they choose.
Jon badly needs to be put on a PR course or just stop giving interviews altogether. He's an absolute grenade. He also needs to stop with the mentioning of the budget. Guess what Jon? We all know our budget is one of the smallest in the league - it is staggeringly unhelpful of you to bleat on about this all the time as if it gives you carte blanche to be as woeful at your job as you choose to think is acceptable by your own evidently low standards.
You work for us Jon. Our hard earned money pays your wages. We own the club and it is more than within our rights to complain about your inadequacies.

The simple fact is that this is a forum for voicing opinions as well as quoting facts. There will never be agreement on a point of opinion, which makes for great reading and self consideration. I have enjoyed this thread and was flabbergasted by the McCarthy interview. In my opinion an inflamitory and wholly unnecessary statement. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. It seems that since his ridiculous contract extension he feels untouchable. Every clap and every cheer I have ever given is in support of the team on the pitch. I see no point in being offensive toward a player. However, in no way does any of my applause relate to McCarthy. He was insulting and offensive towards the fans last season, and does not deserve forgiveness for this on its own. Regardless of opinion I find aspect of Richard's comment disrespectful too. Quote - "It seems to me that it's been tough for some regular posters on this board during this summer, with little or nothing to moan about. When a friendly match goes against us, the gloves are off again. Amazing." Why he feels it his duty to defend McCarthy and hold fellow supporters in contempt is beyond me. Tarvinblue has his opinion it seems.

Opinion seems to be that he has got ten matches. judging from the friendlies I have seen nothing has changed from last season apart from the names on the shirts. A comprehensive defeat at Solihull red hot favourites for the drop, and that enemy of yours Jon [negativity] will abound. We pay and care about this. You receive money for it. Think on before blaming the fans for poor results.

Does he actually understand the implications of what he says?
Think about it, we're now well onto the third page of what is supposedly a thread about last night's friendly and virtually every post has moved on to his comments to the press. When the thread started, I expected the usual 20 or so posts about the match which would peter out until the next game but the fact that we're now debating JmC and it's showing no signs of diminishing demonstrates to me the shock/anger/dismay at his comments
I fear the sense of impending doom has already started
It shouldn't be like this pre-season!
