Anyone who didn't go, don't even try slagging off that performance or McCarthy. Lads did us proud when Hartlepool were pushing for a winner. Impressive performance by all I'm not one who slagged him off but they hit the bar/post three times. We were very lucky to get a point from that and we only scored from a bad error. But we put the ball in the goal once and so did they. That's all that matters.

A points a point, but sounds like we were gifted a goal and then hung on for dear life. Only Hartlepool's poor finishing saved us. 3 games in and 3 points. 3 points needed on Saturday.
have to say, it sounded dreadful on the commentary and we seemed to be battered. Forgetting them hitting the woodwork three or four times , but how many corners did Pool's have ? Given we haven't won at Pools since 1971, in normal circs this would be a great point. But the way we are playing once again this season, with virtually a new team and McCarthy resorting to his fabled 451 formation is highly concerning. It will be interesting to hear Pools fans views on the blues performance.
They are saying we battled really well and made it difficult for them. Seen a lot of credit for our performance from them

For anyone saying I'm talking about them, I haven't read through his thread yet. Just saying that they performance doesn't deserve much critisism. If we had that performance during a good spell of form we'd all be saying it was a good display But this performance hasn't come during a period of good form. It's come during a substantial period of form where we've been incredibly defensive and passive. McCarthy can bleat on about are unbeaten start but we've not actually looked like beating any of the three sides we've played. Give him till the end of September and if we're being served the same shite we need to pay him off...

Anyway, back on topic. Great to see akintunde on the score sheet again. This lad could have a great season if given enough games.

Usual post match interview (friendly) fare from McCarthy. Firstly seemingly refereed to difference in "status" between clubs, swiftly correcting to “resources” (what a surprise) . He also felt it was "outstanding " to get a point at Hartlepool. In McCarthy’s world average/ordinary/lucky/trying hard seemingly equals “outstanding” . If we had won 2 or 3 nil that would indeed have been outstanding !

The entertainment, level of opposition and history of less than a point a game since last December is irrelevant, we didn't get beat. I think it was John Still at Dagenham last season who said that you are better off playing positively and winning one game and losing the next, rather than drawing regularly. He knows a bit about being successful in this division.

Just had a quick look at the Hartlepool forum and not seeing any praise for us. Seen comments saying they'd be amazed if there is a worse side in the league than us, and another one saying we are the most limited team they have seen at The Vic. Another comments saying it was the most one sided draw ever.
You have to scrap it out on the road and dig in, I've no issue with that. But I want to see some quality and ambition in our performance on Saturday against Sutton. If we have a half decent home record and scrap for draws on the road we will be fine, but at the moment I expect us to win games like tonight and lose on Saturday.

I couldn't get to the game tonight from the West Midlands. I listened to what he had to say. Factually he is correct when you consider our budget. They have just dropped out the football league. No idea what their budget is? It will certainly be more than ours. I'm not singing his praises or being overly supportive of what we have done at home so far this season. Even on the basis of the two home draws tonight has to be s good point regardless of the performance. We are getting a feel of how hard we tried from those who attended tonight. Agreed this needs to be followed by a good home performance on Saturday as it's been unacceptable it would seem. I've followed us for nearly thirty years. We are not a football league club anymore and are sadly miles away from such. The objective without a sugar daddy has to be build up gradually until we can get a £7/8 hundred k budget for a season then let's see if we can challenge. Before anyone says when are we going to achieve that then it seems we are growing slowly. Far too much unrealistic expectation.

Hartlepool were always going to pile on the pressure; they've got some top quality players in that side. But we were resilient and with a bit of luck came out with a point. Last season we would have collapsed and come home empty handed.

Seen a lot of credit for our performance from them Any links to this? tbf I did eventually find this comment on "the poolie bunker" saying amongst us being a poor side etc, that "McCombe is still one of the best defenders in this division, the fact Chester have only conceded 2 in 3 games is proof of this, gritty and difficult to break down". So credit where its due..............

But we were resilient and with a bit of luck came out with a point. Last season we would have collapsed and come home empty handed. I didn't go to the game but I agree Hartlepool were going to pile on the pressure if and when we scored because of the stick they would get from there fans. Our goal came early on from a defensive mistake in the game and they piled on the pressure and we seemed to soak that up well and went in at HT 1-0. Now it is down to JM tactics for the second half and what does he do he goes 4-5-1 for 45 mins why ? we should have exploited the fact that they had worked hard and they seemed weak in defence. Instead with JM we go negative for 45 mins allow them to re group and pile on the pressure that's the way it sounded on the match commentary and that doesn't surprise me in the slightest tbh.

Sutton's playing budget last season was slightly in excess of £400,000. This season I would expect it to be at least 20% higher. I'm guessing that CFC's budget would be around £75,000 or so less than that.

Going to be shattered tomorrow morning but it was worth it in the sense that it's always nice to see a new ground. I think first half we played alright to be honest, could easily have gone 2-0 up. They did put pressure on us but their defence was far shakier than ours and another goal would have had their fans going nuts. However half time happened! I hate to slag off JM, genuinely, but you have to question going 4-5-1 when they looked so defensively poor, especially given Akintunde was superb first half and gets moved wide left for his troubles! Terrible decision that invited pressure and lost us a potential victory IMO. They panned us second half, well at truly, and the change was a poor decision. Then I look at the subs...Joyce and Chaps on for Hannah and Akintunde. If I was Aki, I'd be knocking on JMs door asking what I have to do to play a full match up front to be honest. He's been better than Hannah in the first few games, regardless of if Ross is a big signing, you have to play form players in their best positions. Overall I would have taken a point away given their players, despite form. It's the tactics second half that irritate me. That defence was there to be hit with our pace up top on the counter.

Although, it remains to be seen how much impact over the season an extra 75K in the kitty will actually have. Oh well at least Jon won't have to change his usual post match budgetary and lack of resources mantra too much , if we fail to win against these South London giants !

I’m loathed to criticise the players as they did what they were asked to do pretty well, worked bloody hard and defended well. We at least carried a threat in the first half, mainly through Akintunde although I thought Mahon also looked a lot better tonight as well. Hartlepool looked suspect at the back, which is how our goal came about. But we came back out after the break presumably with the instruction of not to cross the half way line and Akintunde dropped to wide right midfield in a switched 4-5-1 shape. Seem to remember a curled Dawson effort from outside the box and a White header for us in the second half, but barely anything else, pretty much just all Hartlepool.
I don’t know where we’re going, if he keeps setting us up in such a desperately negative manner then people just won’t come, gates will be down and so will the budget. It all results in the manager’s job just becoming more and more difficult. I know where we are as a club but he’s nowhere near ambitious enough. If he doesn’t change his ways then it’s without doubt just a matter of when and not if for him.
Good point tonight but a very fortunate one.

Doesn't surprise me with his negative tactics, you only have to read his latest interview in the leader about Craig Mahon, he doesn't want him out on the wing taking on players as that won't keep clean sheets, why re sign him then if that's the case, basically I think he's lost the plot and if we don't win on Saturday I feel he should be removed of his duties.

Let be honest here, McCarthy is tactically inept and doesn't know how to use his players properly. We've got some talent in this side but they can't fulfill their potential if the manager doesn't know how to play them. I'm not one for calling for managers heads so early on but if we get beat Saturday we've got think about getting rid. No change from last season really.

I know things are a bit frustrating, but I think you have to take each result in its own right and say that's not a bad point. I'm not really interested in how many times Hartlepool hit the bar. If you hit the bar, something or someone has forced your shot slightly off target. Fine margins make a difference in any game, and you could say what if our disallowed goal had been given, or Hannah had timed his run slightly better, it might have been a different game. It sounds like the goal they scored could have been put down to a mistake too, so swings and roundabouts, ifs and buts, but one goal each is all that matters.
Overall, even in the awful last eight months, I think McCarthy has got us reasonably well set up away from home. We've won at some tough places like Bromley, Torquay and Braintree, drawn at Hartlepool and lost narrowly against the likes of Lincoln and Dagenham. Alright, there have been a couple of horror shows at Sutton and Maidstone, but I don't think anyone would be complaining about our away form if our home record wasn't so terrible. McCarthy needs to build on the solid away setup and get us playing more positively at home. Being able to grind out a result is great, but you can't grind out every result, and too many draws can send you down.

1-1 doesn't tell the tail we were very much second beat but got lucky. So we made a poor team look like premiership we are in mega trouble this season even though we are unbeaten can't believe I'm saying that weird!! A poor team? On paper than team is top 3 at least. Funny I see their fans saying we played well tonight, odd our own fans can't say the same!!! Good on you McNally for going to Hartlepool and for your enthusiasm. I didn't go, so can't comment on the game, but I don't think there is any criticism of the players, it's McCarthy with his delusions, weird tactics and embarrassing interviews who has lost it with many fans. With a diferent manager, I think we would have a decent team with the players we have.

He calls the fans negative but he plays so negative...like others have said don't win Saturday and it's a poor start. Yes we haven't lost but the performances have been dreadful and better teams will brush us aside. We've done well to get 3 draws so far

I think the point at Hartlepool is solid, and think of the two home games one win would have been sufficient for even the most pessimistic fans to see the progress from last season. We are battling now and working hard to get our points which is a big improvement from last season. There is a long way to go yet to be able to be confident about our place in this league and to take any confidence in to the way we play that is necessary for a win.
Some of the abuse McCarthy gets on here frustrates me. Fortunately there are some good summaries by such as Anders and Lobster that are balanced but still point out the deficiencies, mainly in the way we are playing rather than the players themselves.
McCarthy will be feeling the pressure for a win I am sure and his tactics will be to preserve as much from a game as we can. It is clear last seasons bad run is still leaving its scars in McCarthy's tactics and some fans attitudes.
We need a good win or run of games to change that or the pressure will build for a change by Xmas.
