This us what happens when a small squad has injury troubles. Everyone knows what a comparatively small budget Chester have at their disposal, and simply can't afford to replace missing bodies. Off the top of my head, we're missing Mahon Akintunde Chappel George Killock (match fit?) Shaw coming back from a knock
I'd reckon that probably five of those would be in the starting eleven if fit.
Small budget = small squad. That's the reality of the situation.

According to the club's Twitter, Shaw was acting as a coach today, at least until he came on. It looked like everyone had a go at some point. Shaw to begin with, McIntyre on the substitutes, Felgate towards the end. Even Jimmy Soul looked to be chipping in. The whole debacle looked embarassing. I saw Luke Davies the physio near Macca as well.

Iwelumo should be barred from the Deva, absolute disgrace of a set up and Macca is showing signs of a man completely out of his depth. I have said it all season we have overachieved early on and without some of those fluke wins, Dover 5-0 and Dag 3-0 spring to mind we would be in the bottom 6 and in serious trouble. The crowd is alarming and I see even less on Tuesday night. He is a likeable bloke but oblivious to the things going wrong and that is the most concerning aspect of this all. The selection and tactics over the last 3 months has been awful and highlight very poor awareness and an inability to arrest a serious downturn in form. Nice man but sorry Jon not good enough for this level over a full season. The contract extension was ludicrous. Should of been reviewed at the end of the season and done year by year to give us a easier get out clause and it would work well as a motivational tool. What did the CEO worry about, Macca being snapped up by a bigger club? Get safe and see where we are! I'm sorry but I don't recall the wins against Dagenham, Dover, Sutton etc. flukes.

When we were in that wonderful run in which we conceded only that goal at York City I think most people knew it would end eventually, but didn't it expect to end in us winning only 2 games in around a dozen matches. I believe that Sharps' departure to Walsall and taking all that organisation with him precipitated the downturn, which Macca doesn't appear to know how to reverse.

This is a dreadful run we are so poor and what really concerns me is he is trying to sign up the same team for next season - he can't except or take responsibility for how shite we are by my reckoning we will be lucky to finish above bottom 6 - that is not progress- but worst of all is the boring tedious football being dished up every bloody game - wake up smell the coffee and accept unless we get in different manager we are going to drown with plummeting crowds - but wait he has signed a new long term contract ermmmm oh dear me Cheer up as it could be worse. You could have Andy Preece as manager!!!

I think we rode our luck in each of those games particularly the Dover game in which all our goals came in the 2nd half after we'd been under the cosh for most of the first.

Mind you, Walsall have done well since Sharps has been appointed. They were near the drop zone in November and now they are hovering near the play-offs.

I don't get why people say things like "if it wasn't for those results we'd be in the bottom six". Well, yeah, and if we'd won four or five games instead of losing them we'd be in with a shot of the playoffs.
That's how the league works, you accumulate points as you go along. It's not the league of what might have happened if you discount a few results here and there, it's the league of results that we all saw with our eyes. You can't just scratch of good results and put them down to flukes any more than you can say this current run is an anomaly because we've been a bit unlucky here and there.

Flukes or freaks - use whatever word makes you feel better. That dag game was when we started the season awfully. The club jumped the gun and got blinded by a good run of form. Listening to Jon after each defeat is a joke.

Dishing out 2 and a half years is massive at this level, especially for a guy whose not even been in the job a year, 18 months for now and if that goes well then improve further. In fact who was the last manager to sign a deal over two years?

So changing manager who will have the same if not a lower budget next season will do a better Job? When the results start to go pearshape as they have done since Christmas you think that oh well it's only a blip, but there comes a time when you realise that that nothing is changing and it's not a blip. We have games against Woking , Torquay and York City, who will be fighting for their lives. The other 7 games are against mainly top half teams. All those 10 teams will almost certainly be better than Eastlieigh who were poor today. We need 4 or 5 points. Where will they come from?

Not entirely true that the bad form coincides with Sharps leaving. Sharps left in mid-November, we were in reasonably good form up until Christmas. I think it's a combination of a small squad being stretched, a tough run of fixtures and one or two poor decisions from the manager, including perhaps his choice of assistant. Today does feel a bit like one poor result too many and I can understand some of the frustration and concern. Think we've got to stick by him though and to just rubbish what he achieved earlier in the season is unfair. Let's not be one of those clubs like Southport that sacks two or three managers a season and is still just as useless. One or two poor decisions ? Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Stick by him ? If he keeps us up this year we could be relegated by February next year at our current points rate . You should have stuck to winding up the inbreds on Red Passion .

Until we put a proper infrastructure in place around the Manager I.e Recruitment team etc we will continue to struggle whoever the Manager is. Yes we do have a lower budget than most teams in the league but there are teams with similar budgets who are further up the table than us and you only have to look at Braintree last year. It's time to look at the bigger picture for me.

Right, time to be labelled a happy clapper.
McCarthy, in his first year as a manager, has done absolutely fine. We're not going down, although I understand it gives people a strange thrill to pretend that we are.
That is not to say he has not made serious errors of judgement recently, but he will learn. You can't forget what we are working with, a small budget in a bankrolled league where every game is a battle. We've had really good performances and excellent results at times and now we've hit a blip. That is to be expected with a small, injury-hit squad.
I was by no means in favour of JM getting the job, I thought he was part of the Burr regime and needed to go but throughout this season he has convinced me he is the right man for the job. He understands our situation, he doesn't bleat about the budget, he buys into the community side of our club and he's made us a thoroughly competent outfit on a shoestring. I can't buy into this hysteria because of a few bad results, we're not a club who should sack managers every season, we need to let him build something here and we'll only get there through continuity. It's very telling that everybody thought his contract extension was the right thing to do, because it was and it still is.
As I said, he's made mistakes recently. We clearly need to play 4-4-2, we do need to ditch Iwelumo because it's a farce, we need to play Sam in his best position and we really could do with beg, stealing or borrowing a striker because Kane looks spent. I agree that he could be a little more ruthless with his contract extensions next season and it's hard to justify new deals for the likes of Chappell, Killock, George, Joyce etc.
But overall, I look at this season and think we've got reasons to be optimistic. The club need a HUGE push and creative thinking as to how we can get the gates up for next season, that's a given. But whilst we've got a small budget, I think a manager like Jon McCarthy is our best chance of gradual and continual progression. Give me him over Ronnie Moore any day.

You know what it amazes me how peogle keep saying it's been a decent season I go to most games and can't say I've come away feeling positive from many even in the post Christmas era - I would love to see us attack teams and gorgeous for it and even if we lost could say we had a real good go - Mccarthy is a drawing board man and plays his team like chess pieces with little or no attacking intentions he packs the defence and midfield to soak up pressure and leaves 1 poor soul up top in the vain hope of a breakaway - teams just come at us in waves and eventually get their reward and we trudget off again disappointed - this is not how I want to watch football and as a Manager he is scared to offend players by offering all of them new contracts for the second year in a row - Management is about accepting responsibility and making tough decisions and he doesn't cut the mustard I'm afraid- if people enjoy their experience at the Deva then fine but fans are voting with their feet now and we are hamstrung - I honestly don't know if I can stomach going on Tuesday to watch us struggle against a far superior footballing team who are on the same budget as us but play expansive football - so it can be done you just need the right man in charge

We are all pissed off when we lose and this is a poor run but the players and management need the support of our fans. I wonder if fans like you would be happy if we went down so you could say told you so. Surely getting behind the team is what is needed. We will not go down FACT! Who at the start of the season would of took safety, I would say the majority of us. This is a very difficult league, much more difficult than when we won it as City. You can't just go out and attack teams from the first whistle. We have a paper thin squad with very limited attacking options and arguably our best striker in Akintunde and our only real flair player in Mahon on the sidelines. Take Arnold and Rhead out of Lincolns team and they lose there attacking spark. Get behind the boys and get us over the line. Beat Macc and we are as good as safe.

For all the Jon McCarthy 'love in' on here, we've lost six out of the last seven games, and haven't won at home this year . . . at a lot of clubs that would be curtains for the manager. We'll survive, possibly by the skin of our teeth, but it's not surprising folk are not bothering to turn up . . . 1,500 on Tuesday anyone? Can't believe he hasn't at least tried to bring a striker in on loan. James Alabi has carried our goal threat on his own for ages now.

Taking on teams playing total football won't work most of the time as we don't have good enough players. I heard a statistic yesterday that West Brom had the lowest amount of possession in the PL with something like 32% yet they are 8th and spanked Arsenal yesterday - Pulis accept's that Arsenal have better players so let's them have possession and then counter attack with pace and utilise set pieces. There are notable exceptions such as Bournemouth who have a superb manager who has never compromised his footballing beliefs, but he also had many years to craft a team to play in that way and buy into that philosophy. We were more effective at counter attacking when we had Mahon fit and the problem at the moment is not necessarily that we surrendering possession but it's that we have no pace to spring a counter attack when we do get the ball therefore it keeps coming back at us.

It's poor at the moment but I'm happy that we are a club that is patient and doesn't make knee jerk sacking like Southport.
