This is a dreadful run we are so poor and what really concerns me is he is trying to sign up the same team for next season - he can't except or take responsibility for how shite we are by my reckoning we will be lucky to finish above bottom 6 - that is not progress- but worst of all is the boring tedious football being dished up every bloody game - wake up smell the coffee and accept unless we get in different manager we are going to drown with plummeting crowds - but wait he has signed a new long term contract ermmmm oh dear me

We got 54 points last season with a late flourish of wins. It seems unlikely that we'll reach 54 points this season.
McCarthy has 2 more years to go after this season. We've only done well when Sam Hughes and Ryan Astles have been the central defensive partnership and yet the only game this year that Sam and Ryan have done that was the 1-0 at Southport. At least last season under Burr we never had such long poor runs, we'd always come up with an unexpected win. Absolutely gutted that we,ve gone so long without a home win. 5 home games left to get a win. I wouldn't put any money on it.

He won't be going anywhere as people at the club became giddy after a decent run and offered him a 2 and a half year contract. Exactly the same mistakes were made under Burr. His achievements should have been judged at the end of the season, when accurate assessments could have been made. Right now, we look like achieving less than we achieved last year in terms of a points total and we were knocked out of both cup competitions at a very early stage. Nothing I can currently see warrants a 2 and a half year contract. Sharps leaving was a catalyst to the downfall that has followed, and the fact he pretty much admitted this evening that he's offered a contract to all of the current squad says all you need to know about his ability to see things rationally. He has unbridled faith in a group of players, several of whom just quite simply aren't good enough. How can he allow a situation to play out where basically players will decide whether they are here next year, whilst he waits - probably until late June - to pick up the pieces of what's left behind.

I like Macca, but he has to admit where he's going wrong and he needs to get some fresh blood for next season. I don't think he deserves to go because he has done great in the first half of the season, however he's put players in the wrong positions over the last 2/3 months. Offering every player a new deal isn't the best idea, but he needs to sign some new blood in the correct positions for next season. I am 100% backing him.

Genuine question. Your massive down turn in form seems to have began around the time McCarthys assistant went to Walsall. Was he the brains of the outfit, or is it purely coincidental?

I said at the time McCarthy would be found out when Sharps left and I stand by that. When Sharps was here we were well organised and always kept our shape - now its pear shaped.

Not entirely true that the bad form coincides with Sharps leaving. Sharps left in mid-November, we were in reasonably good form up until Christmas.
I think it's a combination of a small squad being stretched, a tough run of fixtures and one or two poor decisions from the manager, including perhaps his choice of assistant.
Today does feel a bit like one poor result too many and I can understand some of the frustration and concern. Think we've got to stick by him though and to just rubbish what he achieved earlier in the season is unfair. Let's not be one of those clubs like Southport that sacks two or three managers a season and is still just as useless.

He has 2 more years on that contract and with us having a projected £20k loss this season will be in no hurry to pay him off. The Steve Burr debacle will be repeating itself shortly. I like mcarthy but the appointment of Iwelumo has been one of his biggest mistakes in my book. Who was his assistant today? McIntyre? He is still wet behind the ears, we need experience and someone who is able to attend matches on a Saturday. How many other clubs can say they have an assistant manager who doesn't go to matches? It's embarrassing!

Must confess when I'm feeling fed up after a game I can always rely on the usual protagonists on here to totally go over the top and cheer me up No home wins for 3 months, only Southport below us in the Form Table, our league position dropping like a stone, crowds down to 1700, 1 striker on the books, aimless hoofball etc. but yes, lets pretend everything is fine.

I completely disagree. We need to carry on supporting Macca and trust in his management skills. If the players defend that set piece properly we get a decent point and this thread doesn't exist. People need to stop being so knee jerk and remember what was expected of us pre season....and then compare it to what has actually happened. Today was tough to take without reading the massive overreaction of some on here. I find this thread embarrassing

Iwelumo should be barred from the Deva, absolute disgrace of a set up and Macca is showing signs of a man completely out of his depth. I have said it all season we have overachieved early on and without some of those fluke wins, Dover 5-0 and Dag 3-0 spring to mind we would be in the bottom 6 and in serious trouble. The crowd is alarming and I see even less on Tuesday night. He is a likeable bloke but oblivious to the things going wrong and that is the most concerning aspect of this all. The selection and tactics over the last 3 months has been awful and highlight very poor awareness and an inability to arrest a serious downturn in form. Nice man but sorry Jon not good enough for this level over a full season. The contract extension was ludicrous. Should of been reviewed at the end of the season and done year by year to give us a easier get out clause and it would work well as a motivational tool. What did the CEO worry about, Macca being snapped up by a bigger club? Get safe and see where we are!

Unfortunately though, it seems a large section of our fan base have already voted with their feet and consider that the appalling run and poor performances at £18 a pop are not fine. Whilst there is only an outside possibility of being dragged into a relegation scrap, the alarm bells are sounding for next season, which in my view is certainly not fine.

It's clear that McCarthy is living in cloud cuckoo land as he believes we're doing all right and doesn't seem to know how to stop the rot which started in mid- December. I definitely think he got the contract extension on the back of the "Sharps effect". If he plans to give Hudson, Richards, Joyce, possibly Durrell and one or two others' contracts next season then that clinches it for me. Whose decision was it to give the extended contract in the first place. I feel that is gross neglect of our club's sustainability and future.

Giving the manager a 2 and a half year deal was madness at the time, 18 months would have suited both parties.
Looked a better crowd than that today slightly but 1600 is awful, what are we doing for the final few games to get people in? It's ok MM saying we don't believe in giving out free tickets to get people in, so what are we going to do instead? Sit down and do nothing and let crowds dwindle to the lowest it's ever been.
A guy was attending today with his son, he asked me how much it was to get in? Got to be honest I was clueless how much it was for a dad and a lad (don't we have some kind of community hub where dad and lad get in cheap). If a long time fan like me isnt aware of this deal then what chance does a new fan have, in the end he went in the east stand.
surely to god we need to be putting this kind of information outhere on a daily basis promoting games and prices, the apathy off the pitch at the place is awful which is creeping in on the pitch as well. Half time we barely get the half times, nothing at all going on to entertain.

When McCarthy says we've had a god season, he ignores the fact that most of the 'good season' realates to the time when Sharp was here. I just wonder whether McCarthy is offering new contracts to most of the squad because he doesn't have many contacts in the game because surely to God, any manager worth his salt would have brought a striker in on loan before now.

I was a bit dubious when Macca got the job permanently. I was of the opinion that part of the blame for our poor run last season which resulted in Burr getting the sack, should have been apportioned to McCarthy too. He was a cheap in-house option for us at the time. And he made it look so easy at first didn't he? He is a likeable bloke and I think he's shown enough to be given a decent run in the hot seat. Very risky handing out a two and a half year deal though and if results don't improve, there will be people questioning his position. Are we in a position to pay him off though? We could end up with the same predicament that we had with Burr if we are not careful. I wouldn't say I want him to leave his position. You only have to look at the first half of the season to see that he is a very capable manager. His downfall though has to be the appointment of Iwelumo as assistant. We can harp on all day and night about what impact he has on the training ground, but come matchday, nine times out of ten, he's stuck in a TV studio analysing games that don't even involve us. It doesn't look great on matchday's when the MANAGER has no ASSISTANT MANAGER to fall back on. It makes him look lost on the touchlines and it exposes a weakness. It just cannot continue like that. As for wanting most of this season's squad to sign new deals, again, it's a safe option for the club, but some of these players are just not up to it at the minute. Lack of confidence, lack of direction from the manager (and his absent assistant) could be a factor, but if these players want new deals, then they have to bust a gut in these remaining games. As for our final league position? It's a good job we had an excellent first half of the campaign. We'd be in trouble otherwise. We won't go down that's for sure, but we are sinking like a stone and rather than looking ahead a few months ago, I'm starting to look a little anxiously at what is happening below us. This thread could be seen as a bit of an over-reaction to a bad performance and result today, but there have been some very valid points. To sum it up, I'd like to see how the table looks at the end of the season before coming to any conclusion as regards to the managers position. But something HAS to be done about the assistant's role.
