Good news that he's going. It's a start. It's such a dreadful message to the world having him as PM. An embarrassing three years and hopefully the country will never be so stupid again.
I think those of us on the left have to accept it's going to be very gradual process before we get anything like the government we want. Hopefully it starts with the Tories replacing Johnson with someone with no charisma who nobody likes (Michael Gove would be perfect), them losing the next election, and Starmer being PM for a while before people realise he's a waste of space and Labour electing someone a little more progressive and left-leaning.

All I will say about this war criminal Blair tribute act is what’s the point in getting the Tories out if you’re not going to change anything, if you’re not going to wind back their damaging policies? If you’re not going to stop the privatisation of the NHS? If you’re not going to nationalise key utility services (which is what the majority of the public want, by the way)? If you’re not going to help move 15 million people out of poverty?
What’s the point? Literally may as well keep the Tories in for the rest of days.

Between Sunak and Truss for the next Tory leader and PM then.
Just to emphasise, the extent of my interest in this is which candidate is the weaker and more likely to lose a General Election in 2024 or before.
For that reason, I'd prefer Truss. Sunak has more charisma and is a good speaker, plus I think despite his dodgy tax status some people (particularly business owners) still see him as the "good guy" who gave us the furlough scheme. Truss on the other hand is always making a fool of herself.

What's remarkable is how openly they're willing to drag the debate into the gutter. Let's remember, this is a contest for their OWN leadership, the people who sit on the same side of the Commons as them, and you have Nadine Dorries slagging off the clothes Rishi Sunak is wearing! If they treat each other with such disrespect, how can anyone expect them to have the general public's interests at heart? Presumably all these Tory MPs first joined the party because they identified with its ideology. I think recent years have really exposed what that ideology is - self-interest, greed, and often plain nastiness and spite. |
