Perhaps with Afghanistan, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh it's explained by the popularity of cricket, but then you've got Indonesia - always a pre-season tour spot for Liverpool and Man Utd as they're football mad there, yet they're not even one of the stronger nations in their own continent.

Now 18 players of the Afghanistan team are boycotting the next game because of corruption in the Afghanistan organisation!!!

I wonder if our Chester man can sort the corruption and issues i qoute here from Wikipedia: 'Hummel released in 2016 the new kits for Afghanistan. It included an integrated hijab for the female Afghanistan footballers to play with while being covered from head to toe In December 2018, Hummel announced that it will no longer sponsor Afghanistan's football association after allegations emerged of physical, psychological and sexual abuse committed by male employees against players from the country's women's national team'

This has led the women's national team effectively ceasing to officially exist - the Afghan Football Federation has apparently stated that they had 'no plans to re-create the Afghan women's national team' and FIFA wont recognise the exiled team that relocated/fled to Australia. As for the men's team, one of the factors that has led to the current boycott by those overseas based players, was the decision to accept the offer of substantial funds for the federation, courtesy of MBS, - in return for playing their international 'home' fixtures in the Kingdom, despite the players preferring to remain and play at their previous base in Tajikistan.

Hopeless from FIFA as usual. The absolute minimum requirement for FIFA membership should be that you make the game available to both men and women.

If they succeed like the cricket team they and he will be beating Gareth's team before too long. Two games into his regime, both WC Qualifiers - P2 L2 F1 A12. Qualifying now looks highly unlikely after losing 8-1 away in Qatar, followed by a 4-0 'home' defeat to Kuwait, - watched by a crowd of 330 at the Al Ettifaq Club Stadium in the Kingdom of the House of Saud.

What other ex-Chester players or managers have managed international sides? I can think of Roberto Martinez (Belgium & Portugal), Bobby Williamson (Uganda & Kenya), Mick Wadsworth (DR Congo) and John Keister (Sierra Leone). Anyone know any others?

George Thomson was among the scorers in the FA Cup at the weekend, netting Harrogate’s consolation goal at Bolton. I’d forgotten he now played in the EFL.

Aye he's been at Harrogate for about six or seven years - he was with them in the NLN and enjoyed two promotions in three years to get into the Football League.
They've been fairly comfortable at the lower end of mid-table since promotion - finished 17th, 19th and 19th but comfortably away from the bottom two points haul. Some rise into the league from where they were only six or seven years ago, and a club we should aspire although I appreciate their Chairman (who is the manager's father) has a bit of money about him. He's a construction magnate who was worth about £180m in 2019.

Clubs like Accrington and Halifax are more ourcrooe models, although must admit I don't know exactly how they are funded.

Accrington's Andy Holt is a successful plastics businessman, took control of the club in 2015 when they were close to folding and cleared £1.5m debt. He recently put the club up for sale in one of his many, many infamous Twitter rants.

He recently put the club up for sale in one of his many, many infamous Twitter rants. He may be a bit temperamental but he’s also extremely interesting I find. He puts a lot of insightful stuff out there about the ups and downs of how a club like Accrington is run. A lot of his investment has been on infrastructure, rebuilding the stand down the side, the new bar/restaurant/changing rooms etc. Got to admire how he and Coleman have worked the transfer market as well, signing Kayden Jackson on a free and then selling him for £1million. Signing Bishop from Leamington and then on again to Portsmouth etc.

Completely agree. Appreciate that didn’t come across in the above post and I inadvertently made him out to be a bit of a crackpot. Excellent job they’ve done at Accrington. Definitely infamous on Twitter though!

Simon Grand appointed caretaker manager of Lancaster - with his old mate Danny Livesey having also recently joined their coaching staff to replace the departing Graham Lancashire.

Jamie Reed at the age of 36 has just signed for our neighbours over the border, Buckley not Wrexham.

Notice Rob Apter has been tearing it up at Tranmere in the last few months, not seen much of Charlie Jolley this season though I whenever I've caught their highlights on the EFL show. Kelly Nmai also been getting a fair amount of game time at salford
