Anyone who boos the Italian anthem on Sunday should get in the bin - it’s an absolute belter. I have never seen a team enjoy their anthem as much as this one. Good old Giorgio just breathes it in - fair play, he's loving his football golden years.

We seem to live in an era where it's always 'us versus them' - Brexit... general elections... To vax or not to vax... Taking the knee... always explosive arguments either side on social media. Since social media football rivalry seems to be particularly unpleasant, so I wonder if this has contributed to the lack of respect towards other sides. We all know the Italian national anthem will be booed, which will practically do their team-talk for them. Yes, it's one of the worst things about the post-2016 climate. Everything is binary, you have to be on one side or the other and express your view as concisely as possible, often as concise as "boo!". There's no room for sensible, nuanced discussion.
I find the American-style whooping and applause of taking the knee really cheesy and mawkish, but it's become necessary to drown out the boos. Really, we should be mature enough to just respect it in silence and spend a couple of seconds in contemplation.

I was about to compare it with respectful minute’s silences but then remembered that some of our (Chester) fans shamefully can’t even do that. That was on national television too.

Violence is never acceptable at football, but I find it particularly hard to understand why you would want to hit someone when a) you've just won a game and reached your first semi-final for 50 years and b) it's somewhere like Denmark that we have no historical reason to show animosity towards. Sadly, with the soft penalty and laser incident, we haven't made many friends in this tournament. On a more positive note the mentality of England fans is slowly getting better, as this article shows - novaramedia.com/2021/07/08/englands-football-team-is-changing-because-england-is-changing/ - but there are still some dinosaurs following the team. Although I've recently read "All Played Out" by Pete Davies. It's a bit old now being about the 1990 World Cup, but he reckons journalists stir a lot of the trouble up and go around offering England fans £50 for posing while doing a Nazi salute, £100 for bricking a window, and so on. Wouldn't surprise me at all.

Wouldn't surprise me at all. That’s a great piece by Novara, indeed without immigration this England’s strongest X1 (or at least the X1 that Southgate has started with the last couple of games) would only have Pickford, Stones and Maguire. I know the whole “Marxism” thing is a joke about the anti-racism message the players are taking and there’s alot of jokey memes doing the rounds about England’s change in fortunes since embracing Marxism (just appropriating the so-called “slur” because it’s only about taking a stance against racism), however there is a lot to be said about creating an atmosphere of collective responsibility and mutual support in the dressing room - it’s powering England’s success. The country has changed, old attitudes are dying off and younger peoples attitudes about an inclusive society as a whole are mirrored by this new England football team.

I'm glad the FA has been fined for the booing of anthems. This has been going on for years at England matches, it's more than a "small minority" and the FA has never done much about it. I noticed in Scotland's game against the Czechs that their fans don't do it.

The FA was fined for a fan shining a laser at Kasper Schmeichel the letting off of fireworks inside the stadium and the booing of the Danish National anthem all 3 occurences totally unacceptable the 1st 2 capable of causing personal injury, the small minority English fans need to grow up and start going to matches to enjoy the occassion I would not tarnish the majority, every club has its minotity of yobbos including ours and all International teams have the same problem. The thing is how many times do we see flares let of in grounds in Italy France Spain etc yet not a lot is made of it

The FA have been fined because it happened when everyone was watching. Wales always do it to us when we play them etc etc.
Anyone who boos the Italian anthem should be shot on the spot though, almost feel like joining in myself with that.

Oh my word stop being a tit for once in your life Seriously? interrupting a minutes silence for 266 local deaths was and will always be awful. It's disgusting and if it was the other way round I'm sure your myopic knuckle dragging nationalism would be as offended as you could be. My Granddad lost his brother in that horrible incident. It's not banter or a bit of fun... families were ruined and people died, regardless of how misguided your support for our club is, that minutes silence was awful. We should be better than that, not as Chester fans, but as people. UTFS

Oh my word stop being a tit for once in your life This is a disgraceful posting. If it hadn't been for the excellent reply by Username, I would have deleted it. There is no place for it on any board, let alone Chester's.

“Brothers of Italy, let one flag, one hope gather us all. The hour has struck for us to unite." “God save our gracious Queen, long live our noble Queen, god save the Queen.” Can tell why one is belted out in such furious passion and the other isn’t.

Yes it’s embarrassing but it’s not a small minority doing it, it’s thousands of idiots. What are the FA supposed to do instruct the stewards to throw out anyone who boos the opposition National Anthem? Might have to employ a few more stewards.

Poor effort that, they'll both be getting 'belted out' later.

A thread about, arguably, the biggest game in England's recent history is showing signs of degenerating into squabbling just like so many others. Each time it happens, it nudges me a little closer to just calling it a day. I wonder how many others feel the same.

Back on topic, who would you start on the right? Such a key area for us and good that we've got competition for places. My only other thought would be adding Henderson in midfield as we may need his experience to handle the occasion.

Hopefully back to the big issue of the day.
England WILL win!
Why?
Because I've bet on an Italian victory and that's the kiss of death to them!
As we're all probably aware, the hype on TV, radio, Press etc has gone into overdrive - my concern is that many pundits are taking the result as a foregone conclusion (God knows the reaction if we lose). Personally, I think it's going to be tight and will possibly end up in extra time. It will certainly be fascinating - the exuberence of the young English team vs the resurgent Italians with their experience and flair.
For everyone's sake. let's just hope it goes off without incident and is the showcase on and off the field that it should be.

Scenes from places like Leicester Square - no wonder FIFA always bypass us for World Cups. Disgraceful.

What a start!
But have we scored too early?

What a start! But have we scored too early? Need a 2nd don't we, passing needs to be a bit sharper in the final third.

Sterling should have been taken off an hour ago it’s not even like he’s going to take a penalty.

So disappointing but in the cold, hard light of day, we were second best.
Hopefully the experience, horrible as it is, will stand us in good stead for the future
