some of the fans..... the majority were pleased to see the back of him. Would take that with a pinch of salt. After all the Grimsby fans wanted rid of Paul Hurst when things weren't going their way. Hurst has now led Shrewsbury to second place in League One. As I pointed out on another thread, go to Grimsby's forum, page 36 and make up your own mind.

Has anyone mentioned length of any contract? I would have thought a contract to the end of the season would be sensible. Managers of the calibre of Neil Warnock accept short contracts. Given the mistake made by giving John McCarthy a long contract I trust we don't make the same mistake. I am sure there's an experienced or even younger well respected candidate who would accept a short term contract. Either that, or a contract to the end of the 2018/19 season but with a relegation termination clause. You'd think anyone coming in would want a bit of job security

I'm not so sure on Bignot, think his record is similar to Neil Young's good in the lower league but found asking in the National league and above. He inherited a good Grimsby side so something had to be wrong for the board to get rid 5 months down the line with his management style.

He did well in the Conference.. that's why Grimsby snapped him up... Grimsby fans have said he inherited a bang average side, and some of the young hungry players he signed there are still Grimsby's key players. He has a track record of scouting young non league talent and getting potential out of them. Examples of this being Bogle, Osborne, Asante etc. They have gone on to make the club significant money. Bogle left Grimsby for £1m!

correct decision to remove Jon now before the cups start it's been a fair few seasons since we had a decent cup run and with him at the helm i doubt we would of got far
leading us forward there are plenty of decent choices but this man needs to come out when the going gets tough and be honest in his press conferences don't bring up pointless excuses like Jon did
Whoever it is we need to get behind from the first day as i feel this could be a bumpy few months

One of the common complaints is how he dismantled the side to suit his own needs, favourites who helped them achieve promotion shown the door. It’s actually what a lot of our fans continually post about on here though, to see the players in the side that many just don’t regard to being up to this level being moved on. Also seemed to chop and change a bit, although Grimsby were in a safe enough position for him to do so. I’m struggling to have a firm opinion myself, not sure who I want. Depending on if he’s applied I do think we’ll end up appointing Brabin though.

There were rumours of players refusing to sign contracts etc if he stayed. Sounds like a Burr clone. I really hope we don't get Brabin. He really isn't the right man for a "family friendly community" club, is he? As we try to promote ourselves. He also signs a bunch of thugs as well. Just look at the collection of players that Tranmere have. After saying that we probably wouldn't get relegated with him here. Not sure you can say that with much confidence about a few of the candidates. How we don't fall for the smoothest confident interview candidate, rather than the best manager.

On a serious note - we tried Mills who was generally welcomed on his appointment but turned out to be a disaster.
How about an ex Chester skipper? Deano has done a great job so far at Wrexham?

Yeah, that's the concern with Brabin. As I said, I don't have a strong view on anyone and I'm glad it's not my choice as you can pick holes in all of them. Back to Bignot, jb made a good point earlier that when evaluating Grimsby fans views it's worth remembering they continuously gave Paul Hurst all sorts of stick despite actually eventually getting them up and he's now doing a good job at Shrewsbury as well.

You would have thought there would have been some supportive posts though, wouldn't you? In spite of all our vitriol at times, there are usually some people still being positive.
I think this is going to be a difficult process. There's little football experience on the board, and probably no-one with contacts to use and check out candidates. May come down to the 'type of manager or person' we would like. As you said wouldn't want to be making the choice. Unless one candidate stood out at the interview and had the history to back it up.

Two points to this
1, Look at the players unhappy Bignot was unhappy with at Grimsby, other than the GK who is piss poor and was playing 2nd fiddle to a young U20 England and Man Utd keeper all of the other players that "allegedly" didn't want to play for Bignot were all released at the end of the season by Russell Slade. And on top of that, Russell Slade really hasn't pulled any trees up and is getting hammered by big sections of Grimsby players every week.
2, Bignot knows the NL and was head hunted by a FL club, they seen something and whilst it hasn't worked for him there, it is how much of a fit for our football club he is not Grimsby!
Plays controlled football, offers stability and isn't someone who looks like he's using us to get another job in 6 months

I'm not saying community involvement isn't important but this can be done by someone else. At the end of the day we are a business.

On another thread I queried whether the Community side should have any impact on the appointment of the manager. We have other people doing that very well. However, Brabin is hardly a good role model on any level. Surely there is a candidate out there that would get results, without a serious down side.

Marcus Bignot was manager of Solihull first team and also the under 18s when he first became manager there. He was also director of football at the club. Whulst he was there, Solihull went from the first team and u18s, to the first team and 30 other teams, including multiple woman's teams and a thriving community side to the club. So he would actually be a perfect fit in terms of meeting the community element of the criteria.

Just think it's difficult to promote yourselves as a family friendly club, with a manager with his history. Maybe we just ignore the bits we don't like, and airbrush them out. Maybe some of the others are just as bad, but we don't know them that we'll! I just look at the bunch of thugs and idiots he signed for Tranmere. Wouldn't want to be sat in a dressing room with that lot everyday. Are hey really the kind of people we want to be paying wages for? Cook, Norwood , the keeper etc. Maybe because it's football, it's ok.

Davies is absolute class for this level as well. Pick some better players to criticise next time pal

He's a complete tosser. Maybe because it's football it's ok? That's the question I was raising. I suppose if he's our tosser, it's ok? I suppose a lot of supporters may think that. On a serious note, I doubt we'd attract players of that ability anyway, regardless of whoever the manager is.

At the end of the day this is a results business as JM found out to his cost. You can make all the appearances you like at Senior Blues meetings and kids soccer schools, but if the results on the pitch aren't good enough then I'm afraid the whole football club suffers. Our lifeblood, fundamentally, is the performance of the first team as the gate receipts and sponsorships linked to that are what keep us sustainable. Now, whoever comes in needs to recognise the importance of our community efforts. It is vital that they are supportive of them but their ability to commit heavily to being part of them should not be part of the selection criteria. I would rather a manager and players with a bit of a nasty streak, who are successful on the pitch, than a lovely man who makes appearances and says all the right things but is ultimately unsuccessful in gaining results. Clearly there is a limit to that as well (you wouldn't want Steve Evans for instance) but it's about striking a balance.

A new name in the frame according to the bookies. Dermot Drummy! Been coach at Crawley and Chelsea reserves. Crawley Town record of P- 54, W-15, D-12, L-27, 27.8%. If the club take someone like him on then we might as well have kept McCarthy. His percentage is about on par.
